Reviews: Free Aso Volcano Shuttle Bus: Kumamoto Castle, Mt. Aso, and Kusasenri Day Trip
Guest User2026-03-08
Our guide, Yoshitani, was very friendly! Unfortunately, it coincided with the "mountain scorching" (wildfire) of Mount Aso, a traditional event held annually in February and March in the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture. The aim is to maintain the vast grassland landscape, prevent deforestation, and prepare for new grass growth in spring by burning dry grass. Everything was a dark, smoky black. We'll have to come back another day!

The meeting point was near the Starbucks at the Higashi-Ziguchi intersection of Hakata Station, and we departed on time. Some tourists overslept and didn't wait; they were very punctual. The vehicle was in good condition, and the air conditioning was strong. The tour guide was very enthusiastic. Kumamoto Castle and Mount Aso were both great. Despite the heat, Kumamoto Castle was worth visiting; it had air conditioning, and the panoramic views from the top were breathtaking. There were also many food options on the first floor; the horse meat fried cakes were delicious, and the watermelon-limited-edition soda was very refreshing. During Mount Aso's active period, the vehicle couldn't take us to the closest point for viewing, which was a pity. The ice cream on the mountain was delicious and worth trying. The lunch set meals were also good, although the prices on the mountain were a bit high. The air was fresh, and walking on the grass was much cooler than down below.
Reviews: Complimentary shuttle bus to Mount Aso | One-day tour of Mount Aso, Kusasenri, and Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto, Japan

The time given for Kusasenri is too short for those travel with toddler...they give us one hour for lunch and explore around the area for photo taking..We only left like 20 minutes after lunch to explore and have no time to try the milk ice cream...I have reflected this to the tour guide Helen but she said we need to leave on time...

Our tour guide, Ms. Zhuo, was incredibly genuine, with a wonderful personality and a straightforward nature. Unlike other tour guides who are often driven by self-interest, she genuinely shared the best local food and attractions with us. The entire trip was very relaxing and perfectly planned, making for a smooth day. We avoided traffic jams and didn't waste any time. It was the luckiest trip of our entire trip, and I'd love to see her again! The driver was also a wonderful presence, providing enthusiastic and engaging explanations that were especially entertaining.
Reviews: 1-day tour to Fukuoka's hidden shrine, Aso Volcano, Kusasenri, and Kurokawa Onsen|Kumamoto round-trip

Overall, the price-performance ratio was good, considering it as transportation costs. You could leave the tour group at the end and stay in Kurokawa Onsen, then go directly to Beppu from Kurokawa Onsen the next day. The crater was closed due to a helicopter accident involving Taiwanese tourists in February, so you could only watch a live broadcast at the volcano museum. The tour guide strongly recommended Kusasenri horse oil and face masks. The tour guide gave us discount coupons, making the face mask 5500 yen and the horse oil 6600 yen per bottle. He said it contained horse placenta, so the production cost was high. After buying them, I felt it was completely unnecessary.
