Begin your journey at Marangu Gate, located at an elevation of approximately 1,840 meters (6,035 feet). After completing park formalities, embark on a well-maintained trail that winds through dense montane rainforest.
This section of the route is characterized by its rich biodiversity, offering opportunities to spot various wildlife, including blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The hike to Mandara Hut, situated at around 2,700 meters (8,860 feet), typically takes 3-4 hours.
Upon reaching Mandara Hut, relax, enjoy a packed lunch, and explore the surrounding area. Take a short, approximately 15-minute walk to Maundi Crater. This crater offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and on clear days, glimpses of Kilimanjaro's iconic snow-capped Kibo peak and the plains of Northern Tanzania and Kenya can be seen.
After enjoying the views and the environment, descend back to Marangu Gate, which takes approximately 2-3 hours. The total hiking distance for a Marangu day trip to Mandara Hut and back is around 16 km (6 miles). The entire day trip, including hiking, typically lasts between 5-7 hours.
