Rainbow Mountains: colors that don't look real until you're there
Itinerary
Nine to ten hours. Six passengers maximum. One real 4x4. Visit the Rainbow Mountains, sixth-century cliff monasteries, Georgia's oldest desert monastery and enjoy a village lunch in the middle of nowhere. That's the day ahead.

Real Rainbow Mountains first. A short walk around Lake Mravaltskaro reveals hills in colors that don't look real — red, yellow, green, white, layered by millions of years of geology. No bus park. No queues. Just you, the wind, and one of Georgia's top birdwatching sites. Bring a proper camera.

Then the desert monastery. St. John the Baptist — 6th century, carved into a cliff face. Original frescoes on the walls. Monastic cells cut into rock. A view across the desert to the horizon. Genuine silence. The kind of place that resets something in you.

David Gareja Lavra next. Georgia's oldest desert monastery. Not a reconstruction, not a museum — the real thing, still standing after 1,500 years. Walk it slowly.

Lunch in Udabno. Not included — but worth every lari. Family-run spot in a remote village surrounded by salt lakes and almond orchards. Real Georgian food, no tourist menu. Budget 20–35 GEL, bring cash.

Wine tasting — private groups only. Traditional Kakhetian wines at the end of the day. Optional, bookable when you reserve your private tour.

The practical stuff:
• Runs year-round. Spring brings wildflowers and birds. Summer is hot — start early. Autumn turns the landscape amber. Winter gives you the desert almost entirely to yourself.
• Wear solid shoes — the terrain is rocky and uneven. Bright colors photograph beautifully out here.
• No paved paths. No filters. No crowds. Just Eastern Georgia doing what it does.

FAQ:
• Hike difficult? — Rocky and uneven with some uphill — nothing technical, but wear proper shoes. Slippery after rain. The kind of trail that feels earned when you reach the top.
• What to wear? — Comfortable layers, solid shoes. Bright colors look great against the desert — red, orange, yellow all photograph beautifully out here.
• Lunch? — Family guesthouse in Udabno. Bread, cheese, salads, stews. Vegetarian options available. Not included — 20–35 GEL, pay on the spot.
• Group size? — Maximum 6. Always.
• Runs in winter? — Yes. All four seasons. Winter is spectacular.
• Wine tasting? — Private groups only, optional.
• Vehicle? — Real 4x4 Mitsubishi Delica. Routes inaccessible to standard tour vehicles.
