Wanaka: Siberia Experience Scenic Flight, Hike, and Jetboat

Departing from Makarora, this unforgettable journey begins with a scenic 25-minute (approx) flight over the Southern Alps within the World Heritage-listed Mt Aspiring National Park. Your flight ends with a landing in the remote Siberia Valley, deep within the rugged Southern Alps and within the Mt Aspiring National Park. This is a spectacular place and true New Zealand wilderness. Your pilot will give you a briefing on the hike section before you set off on foot and meander through the stunning natural landscape you have reached.

Your adventure continues with a 7km unguided hike through the valley, traversing native rainforest and river valleys. The trail is clearly marked and takes approximately 2.5-3 hours to complete, requiring a medium level of fitness. Enjoy the serenity and raw power of nature as you make your way to the beautiful Wilkin Valley. There are both up-hill and down-hill sections on this well defined dirt track that is maintained by the NZ Department of Conservation.

The final leg of your journey is a thrilling 30-minute jetboat ride along the braided Wilkin River, bringing you back to your starting point. Siberia Experience departs from Wonderland Makarora Lodge 5944 Haast Pass-Makarora Road, Makarora West. It is approx 1 hours self drive from Wanaka or 2 hours from Queenstown. Please phone before leaving your accommodation for a weather check. The later you can call us the more accurate the weather call will be. You will return to Wonderland Lodge approx 4 hours after you board your aircraft - times may vary - Siberia Experience is co-ordinated by Southern Alps Air.
The flight is with Southern Alps Air, the Hike is a Freedom Walk on a Department of Conservation trail/track and the jetboat operator is Wilkin River Jets.
