Embark on an unforgettable adventure along the stunning Levada do Caldeirão Verde, one of Madeira's most beautiful trails. Begin with a convenient pickup from designated areas in Funchal, Caniço, or Garajau in the morning.
Travel to Pico das Pedras in Santana, the starting point of the PR9 hike, with a local host and driver knowledgeable about the area, who will provide all the information needed for a safe and enjoyable hike. Maps, GPS coordinates, and safety tips are provided to guide you through the trail.
PR9 runs through the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva Forest, where historic levadas built in the 18th century carry water to the farmlands of Faial. Along the trail, you'll pass through dramatic escarpments, mountains, and four tunnels carved into the rock.
Your goal is the Caldeirão Verde lake, formed by a vertical waterfall from the Ribeiro do Caldeirão Verde, at an altitude of about 100m: a truly magical sight.
The hike covers approximately 6.5 km each way (13 km round trip) on the main trail. To reach the official PR9 trail, all hikers first walk the accessible PR9.1 “Caminho para Todos” (1.9 km each way), making the total distance around 17/18 km. The hike typically takes 5:00/5:30 hours, plus transportation time.
After completing the trail, your host will ensure a comfortable return to your original pickup location. This activity combines the freedom of a self-guided hike with the safety, guidance, and support of local expertise, making it perfect for nature lovers and those eager to explore Madeira's breathtaking landscapes with peace of mind.
