Sillar Route Tour
Itinerary:
09:15 AM: Start of the tour to the Sillar Route, a sightseeing tour that explores the history and culture related to sillar, a volcanic stone used in the construction of historic buildings in Arequipa.
First Stop - Strategic Viewpoint:
Description: We will make a brief stop at an emblematic viewpoint from where you can appreciate a panoramic view of the volcanoes and the Chilina Valley. Depending on the time of the year, we may first visit another traditional viewpoint to observe the volcanoes.
Second Stop - Añashuayco Quarry:
Arrival: Approximately 45 minutes after leaving the viewpoint.
Description: We will visit this working quarry where the ashlar is extracted. You will see an immense canyon with ignimbrite cliffs formed by the extraction of stone.
Activities:
You will learn about the history of ashlar, its production and use over time.
You will see a mega carving of the Church of the Society of Jesus made by the stonemasons.
You will have the opportunity to interact with a stonemason and experience the process of cutting stone blocks.
Third Stop - Quebrada de Culebrillas:
Arrival: Approximately 30 minutes after leaving the Añashuayco Quarry.
Description: We will take a walk of approximately 20 minutes through the interior of this small canyon, formed by the passage of water, with walls of 15 to 20 meters high.
Highlights:
We will observe petroglyphs made by the Wari culture more than a thousand years ago.
Last Stop - Apachetas:
Description: Before returning to the city, we will see the Apachetas, stone formations placed one on top of the other that symbolize gratitude towards nature and are considered a good luck attraction, creating a mystical sensation.
12:30 PM: Start of the return trip to the city of Arequipa.
13:30 PM: Arrival in downtown Arequipa, with disembarkation near the Plaza de Armas.
