Itinerary
Discover the samurai heritage of Matsushiro on a guided day tour from Nagano, then enjoy seasonal fruit picking in the Chikuma countryside. This experience is designed as a relaxed, well-paced day that blends living history with a hands-on local activity—returning to Nagano Station by mid-afternoon.

Begin in Matsushiro, a former castle town with a quiet atmosphere that still feels connected to Japan's feudal era. At the Matsushiro Castle Ruins, you'll walk along preserved moats and stone walls and pass reconstructed gates that help you imagine the original scale of the fortress. Rather than a “museum-like” stop, it's a place where you can sense how the town was laid out for defense and daily life.

Next, step into the world of the Sanada Clan at the Sanada Treasure Museum. Here, you can see authentic samurai swords and armor up close—objects that immediately make the era feel real. Your guide will add context to what you're seeing, explaining how equipment, symbolism, and status shaped samurai identity, and how the Sanada became one of the most storied families in Japanese history.

Continue to the Former Sanada Family Residence, a well-preserved samurai estate where you can actually enter the buildings and walk through traditional rooms. It's a chance to understand samurai life beyond battles—how high-ranking families lived, hosted guests, and maintained their position in society. The architecture, layout, and gardens offer a quieter kind of “wow,” especially for guests who enjoy detail and atmosphere.

Then visit the Bunbu School, a former samurai academy where warriors were trained not only in martial discipline but also in scholarship and ethics. Seeing the space in person makes the “warrior-scholar” ideal tangible—this wasn't just theory, but a real education system that shaped leadership and conduct in the Edo period.

After Matsushiro, you'll head into the countryside for the second main experience: seasonal fruit picking in Chikuma. Depending on the season, you may pick strawberries in winter–spring or citrus in autumn. This is a fun, hands-on activity that's easy for most travelers, and it adds a fresh “local farm life” contrast to the samurai history you experienced earlier. It's also a great moment for photos—and for simply enjoying Nagano's slower rural side.

Along the way, you'll make a brief stop at Oyaki Farm—mainly for the scenery, terrace views, and a quick look inside the factory. Oyaki dumplings (a beloved Nagano specialty) are available to purchase with seasonal fillings, but the focus remains on the samurai town experience and fruit picking.
