I tried to book a Shinkansen ticket in advance on the official website, but it didn't work unless it was in English. Seats are automatically assigned. Even though I'd already made all my reservations, when I tried to check my reservation on the official website, it said there were no reservations. And when I went to get my paper ticket, the automatic ticket machine said it couldn't find my reservation for some reason. It was fine because I was able to get my ticket at the ticket counter, but it did worry me a bit.★

It’s super foreigner-friendly — the 3-day pass lets you hop around on the HSR pretty much as much as you want. Just a heads-up: plan your route properly, because time flies and it’s easy to miss the true “must-go” spots if you wing it.
I used mine for a Tainan run and it was totally worth it — visited 林百貨 (Hayashi Department Store) and a bunch of other places around the city. Tainan has that chill, old-soul vibe: great food, slower pace, and so many photogenic streets to wander.★

We booked the "Round-the-Island Star Cute Journey" train online, boarding at Taichung Railway Station at approximately 7:18 PM.
The train has six carriages: carriages 3 through 6 are business class, and carriages 1 and 2 are the dining car and activity carriages.
The business class carriages have a 1+2 seating arrangement. The train offers drinks and food, but on the Taichung to Taipei route, only all-you-can-drink drinks are available.
Passengers can sing karaoke and do crafts in the activity carriages, and also enjoy drinks in the dining car. The restaurant also offers stamp collection items and souvenirs. Our two-hour journey was completely enjoyable.★

Jimmy was a phenomenal tour guide— he even gave us great food recommendations/stops on the trip to try famous Taiwanese dishes (beef noodle soup and xiaolongbao), which was an unexpected, great addition to the rest of the itinerary!
