Vanalinn

4.6/5
112 reviews
Vanalinn is a remarkably well-preserved medieval city on the Baltic Sea and was once an important trading port of the Hanseatic League. In the Lower Town, centered around Raekoja plats, the Gothic Old Town Hall stands on one side of the square. St. Olaf's Church, with its spire over 100 m high, the Three Sisters houses with their three connected gables, and the Town Hall Pharmacy, which has records of operation dating back to the early 15th century, are all scattered throughout this area; a few minutes south of the square is St. Nicholas' Church & Museum, which is now a museum of religious art; the late medieval masterpiece "Danse Macabre" housed inside is particularly worth a stop. The higher Toompea Castle area, also known as the Upper Town, features the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin standing side by side, which, together with the ancient castle, outline the skyline. The medieval-style doors, windows, and hanging signs along the streets are details that many people easily miss. The preserved ancient city walls stretch for nearly 2 km, connecting one circular tower after another, offering a different perspective from the top of the wall. Walk to the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms on the edge of Toompea, where red-tiled roofs layer upon layer spread out toward the Baltic Sea.Estonia · Tallinn

In June every year, it is the Old Town Festival (OldTownDays), which usually lasts for 4 days. There will be many vendors in the Town Hall and the square next to it, and several concerts, dances and medieval themed carnivals will be held.Estonia · Tallinn

Tallinn not only has a well-preserved ancient city, but also has a 2-kilometer-long ancient city wall. You can also climb the tower and experience first-hand how the moat guards defend against intruders. Part of the city wall, open to the public, connects the towers of Nunna, Sauna and Kuldjala. In the ancient city, you can also look at the city walls. The better viewing points are at the Patkuli Viewpoint (Patkuli) in Toompea and the Tower Square (Tornideväljak) near the railway station.Estonia · Tallinn

The Red Tower is the only surviving defensive structure in the Pyrfur region from the Middle Ages. It is a symbol of the architectural style of this ancient city. According to research by historians, in the 14th century, a sturdy city wall was built at the junction between the city and the outside. Many towers were built around the city wall. The white tower was erected in the northeast center, and the red tower was erected in the southeast center. After the necessary renovations in 1893, the red tower has retained its current appearance.Estonia · Parnu

The Tallinn Music Festival Square is the venue for the Estonian Music Festival, and it is also famous all over the world for the Estonian Music Festival. The Estonian Music Festival is held every five years, and the venue is on the festival square. The festival takes place every five years, around mid-July, when the entire Tallinn Festival Square becomes a sea of joy. Many monumental events in this country take place in this square. Tallinn's Festival Square existed much later than the Estonian Festival, it was only built in 1959, and it is only a few decades old. In addition to hosting the Estonian Music Festival, this square also hosts many large-scale music events every year. The highlight of this music square is a huge 42-meter-high Singing Light Tower.Estonia · Tallinn

Vanalinn, Tallinn’s Old Town, is a beautifully preserved medieval quarter that feels like stepping into a storybook. Cobblestone streets wind past colorful merchant houses, Gothic churches, and hidden courtyards, all encircled by impressive stone walls and towers. Town Hall Square is the lively heart, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere from a cozy café. Climbing Toompea Hill offers panoramic views over red-tiled rooftops and the Baltic Sea. By day, it’s a treasure of history and architecture; by night, lantern-lit streets create a magical charm. Vanalinn is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic medieval ambiance with a vibrant modern twist.

The Old Town of Tallinn is divided into the Upper Town and the Lower Town. Follow the guide to walk from the Lower Town to the Upper Town, through the streets and alleys. Among them, the St. Catherine's Passage is a relatively distinctive small street. It is narrow and a little steep. The street is a cobblestone path. Through this street, you can reach the highest point of the Old Town of Tallinn to see the scenery of the city.

【View】It is worth seeing the cathedral combined with the entire castle and the castle mound (actually, otherwise it would not work because it is an integral part of the castle). There are organs and baptisteries in the spacious and bright rooms with photos, as well as churches and souvenir shops. Although the cathedral obviously does not claim to be an architectural masterpiece, you can learn many interesting facts and legends with the help of an audio guide (including in Russian).
