Accommodation: Since it was my first time in Beijing, I researched the locations of three hotels beforehand (but they actually arranged a newly opened, unrated hotel; the only redeeming feature was a new computer with internet access). Because the hotel was far from the city center, I tried the Beijing subway's 2-yuan "travel the world" discount. Food: So-so. The group meals cost 20 yuan, so I had to cover the rest myself (but the hotel was in the suburbs, so finding a place to eat wasn't convenient). Transportation: Okay, but the tour guide didn't explain much, so we had to sit in different seats each time. Sightseeing: We squeezed in so much time (it turned out the tour guide was being kind, squeezing in most of the day for an extra activity – a trip to Tianjin, 320 yuan per person). They didn't visit any of the many attractions in Beijing, and the Tianjin trip included free attractions.

I first saw the Xin'anjiang Dam on a cigarette pack when I was in elementary school. This time, I took my son to see it in person, fulfilling my own dream and letting him appreciate the scenery while learning about power generation. It was worth it!

The price of the independent travel packages on Ctrip was neither too high nor too low, and overall I was quite satisfied. The Tokyu Hotel in Osaka was excellent, with personalized service and complete facilities. The Nihonbashi Hakosaki Hotel in Tokyo was much worse. The room was very cold, there was no humidifier, and the room wasn't cleaned properly, a significant difference from Tokyu. Furthermore, Ctrip's after-sales service was poor; there were no helpful travel tips whatsoever, which should be improved in the future. My girlfriend's scheduled bus, MU5158, was cancelled without her timely notification, causing her considerable worry—this was unacceptable.

Lovely boat trip on the Rhine. Plenty of seats, and the main sights were described over the tannoy, via a recorded soundtrack, in German and English. This was clear and easy to hear. The staff were friendly and table service was prompt (we certainly didn't experience the delays that others had described in their reviews). Just make it clear to the server if you are not with the people sitting on your table, as they put all our drinks on one bill. This wasn't a problem as the lovely couple sitting with us ordered more drinks later on and chose the drinks that we had had. This meant they could give us the new bill to pay, so it was all sorted out without any use issue. A pleasant way to spend an hour and a half seeing the sights of Cologne from the water.
