Personally, I think 3 days is enough to explore Chiang Mai, but if you want to relax, you can stay a couple more days. Since there were only 3 of us, the tour guide and I discussed it and moved the itinerary from the first afternoon to the third day. The Orchid Garden takes about 30 minutes, the Snake Garden 20 minutes, and the Long Neck Karen Village about 30 minutes. The attractions aren't very large, so we had plenty of time to return to the hotel early and rest. Remember to tip the elephants when riding them, as you'll need to reward them three times along the way—20 baht for a bunch of bananas each time. The mahout will take photos for you along the way; if you're satisfied, you can tip him 100 baht. There's also a tip of 20 baht when you take the oxcart. The bamboo raft trip is about 30 minutes; the boatman will ask for a tip when you get off the raft—you can give whatever you think is appropriate. Temples in Chiang Mai generally don't charge entrance fees; buying a ticket is considered a donation. On the fourth day, we went to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep on our own, hiring a songthaew (shared taxi) for 500 baht round trip (negotiable), it's not mandatory to buy a ticket. You can buy some fried pork rinds in Chiang Mai, but they're rarely sold in Bangkok.Trip.com picks
