During the off-season, there were very few tourists. The attractions had professional guides who organized tours for groups every so often. Along the way, guides provided commentary, and each attraction even had people playing the roles of shopkeepers and innkeepers, explaining the unique history, culture, and architectural style of their respective sites. This was the most well-organized and distinctive ancient town I've visited; I felt I learned a great deal and it left a deep impression. The guide's explanations helped me understand why this seemingly remote town was once such a prosperous center of trade during the Ming and Qing dynasties—it was all determined by the different levels of transportation development and the demands of trade in different eras.
