Wowzer a not to miss! I have been to many national parks and nature preserves and this has to be up there in the top ten! A beautiful self-guided walk through the geothermal valley, surrounded by hotsprings, very cool vegetation and birds and all at your own pace, we took about three hours, you could do it in less or take the better part of the day. Absolutely stunning views and lots of birds to watch. We also took the boat trip at the end it was great and a better chance to see more geysers. Plus added benefit the Cap'n was great and had spent time piloting in Alaska waters so we had a good chat about that too. The walk is also easy for kids and even better when you are done there are buses that bring you back to the top/carpark so even good for us older folks and people with kids. :)

A fantastic cultural school. A superb tour guide, who was also a student here, explained their lives and culture. The dances were breathtaking, and the scenery was truly unique.
Reviews: New Zealand Rotorua Glowworm Kayaking Tour
Guest User2026-03-04
It was a perfect trip! Frank was incredibly kind to book our Lantern Festival tour. Our local New Zealand guide, Classy, picked us up on time at the Rotorua Visitor Centre and took us to Lake Okareka. We stopped at their shop along the way to explain what to wear and provide free kayaking gear. Upon arrival at the lake, they provided kayaks and paddles and offered paddling lessons, which was very helpful for kayaking beginners like us. We were divided into groups of 3-4 kayaks, each led by Classy and Sharon, to observe glowworms scattered across the lake and in caves. They explained everything to us, and their service was professional, warm, and attentive. At the last cave, they even offered local snacks and hot cocoa. The tranquil night, paddling on the lake under a sky full of stars, with glowworms twinkling like stars in the caves, was a truly wonderful experience.
