Wowzer a not to miss! I have been to many national parks and nature preserves and this has to be up there in the top ten! A beautiful self-guided walk through the geothermal valley, surrounded by hotsprings, very cool vegetation and birds and all at your own pace, we took about three hours, you could do it in less or take the better part of the day. Absolutely stunning views and lots of birds to watch. We also took the boat trip at the end it was great and a better chance to see more geysers. Plus added benefit the Cap'n was great and had spent time piloting in Alaska waters so we had a good chat about that too. The walk is also easy for kids and even better when you are done there are buses that bring you back to the top/carpark so even good for us older folks and people with kids. :)

A fantastic cultural school. A superb tour guide, who was also a student here, explained their lives and culture. The dances were breathtaking, and the scenery was truly unique.
Reviews: Rotorua: Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Park Entry Ticket
Guest User2026-04-03
We really enjoyed visiting Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Park and felt it was excellent value for the price. We spent about 3.5 hours there but could have happily spent much longer. Our experience started with the Lady Knox Geyser which was amazing, particularly with the lady singing a beautiful Māori song as the geyser erupted. I’m glad Parking at the main car park was plentiful and close to the main entrance. All staff we encountered were friendly and polite. We took our time walking around the 3 main areas which were breathtaking- other worldly. The walk was a little challenging at times but we took our time and it was fine. There were good walkways from which you could see each geothermal area activity from different viewpoints. The scenery was dramatic and awe inspiring, we loved it. We had lunch from the cafe afterwards which was tasty and well priced. One of our favourite experiences whilst in New Zealand and would highly recommend.
Reviews: Hell's Gate Mud Bath & Spas

A bit pricey, but a rare experience. The volcanic mud bath has a time limit, and staff will remind you. There are many shower areas, both public and private. It was just too hot, so we didn't go inside. It's a place where you can take a short break.
