Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson is located near Fox Glacier and is surrounded by temperate rainforest. The trail winds through dense, moss-covered forests, where you can often hear the calls of native birds along the way. Because tannins from fallen leaves in the forest give the lake a dark color, the surface is smooth as a mirror when there is no wind. The snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps directly opposite, along with the sky, are reflected on the dark water with exceptionally clear outlines, earning it the reputation of a mirror lake. The lake surface is relatively calm on clear, windless mornings, making it the golden time to view the reflections of the snow-capped mountains. The trail around the lake is easy to walk, with multiple viewpoints along the way, including the jetty viewpoint, the panoramic view, and Reflection Island. The combination of forest, water, and snow-capped peaks creates unique scenery at each spot.Fox Glacier · 5.1 km from downtown

With its many peaks and glaciers, crystal clear lakes and sparsely populated villages and towns, the region is the ideal place to experience New Zealand's pristine natural landscapes. The complex and varied topography has made the area a great adventure destination. Adventurous friends will not get bored with the exciting and fun activities here: helicopter hikes on the glacier, skydiving, rafting……you name it. The Fox or FranzJoseph glaciers of the world may be the region's most attractive sights, attracting countless people from all over the world. Although there are more than 140 glaciers flowing down the Southern Alps, only the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier on the west coast have been able to penetrate into the low-lying rainforest, and only here and Argentina have this natural phenomenon in the world. Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are two of the most visited glaciers in the world. One can take a close-up tour of the natural wonders of this place with a guided tour. Experienced guides will lead you up the glacier, through ice towers, pancake rocks, caves and crevices. For more adventurous adventures, ice climbing, mountaineering and helicopter excursions are also available. The complex and varied topography of the West Coast provides good conditions for adventure sports. Whether it's a helicopter hike on a glacier, rafting through a glowworm cave, or skydiving in the Southern Alps, you can experience the thrill of extreme sports accompanied by the beautiful local natural scenery. The source of Franz Josef Glacier is in the Southern Alps, extending all the way into the temperate rain forest, only 300 meters above sea level. Glacier hikes can be arranged in neighbouring towns. In addition, it is not difficult to reach the end of the glacier. Scenic flights also provide an extraordinary bird's-eye view of the glacier.Fox Glacier · 9.3 km from downtown

Mount Cook is located in New Zealand's Mount Cook National Park, belonging to the Southern Alps, with a height of 3724 meters. It was named after Captain Cook, the first Englishman to discover the east coast of New Zealand and Australia. The local aborigines call it Aoraki, which means "top of the cloud". In 1882, the Irishman Green (William Spotswood Green) attempted to climb Mount Cook for the first time. Since then, Mount Cook has gradually developed into the centre of New Zealand mountaineering.Gammack · 17.6 km from Fox Glacier

Tasman Glacier is located on the east side of Mount Cook, with a total length of 29 kilometers and a width of 3.2 kilometers. As the Tasman Glacier continues to naturally shorten, the melting of the glaciers slowly began to form Tasman Lake (commonly known as Ice Weir Lake), which has been around since the 1990s. The lake began to grow significantly and became the source of many lakes in the South Island. Due to the huge force of the glacier moving, the two sides of the valley were cut abnormally and completely, leaving a large number of glacial traces of different periods, and a large number of black rocks interlaced in the ice and snow.Gammack · 21.9 km from Fox Glacier

In this national park, known as the "land of glaciers," huge tongues of ice extend to near sea level in some places. The 3000m peak overlooks the vast inland rainforest of the Tasman Sea. It's a paradise of tall grass, rolling coasts, and interweaving lakes, rivers and wetlands. For many tourists, the fast-moving Fox and Franz Josef glaciers are the main reason for their visit. At the foot of the glacier, you can hear the creaking and crashing sound of the ancient glacier slowly marching towards the valley that has been honed by time. The park between the glacier and the ocean is a bird watcher's paradise. The rainforest and vast wetlands are home to a variety of rare species such as the Okarito brown kiwi.Waiho · 12.7 km from Fox Glacier

Milford Sound is a world-famous natural wonder, a glacial landform located in the South West Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand. Steep, jagged cliffs emerge from calm, dark waters, lush rainforest grows on the rock walls, and waterfalls plunge hundreds of meters into the sea. 1. The beautiful road in the world The road from Queenstown to the Fiordland is known as one of the most beautiful roads in the world. Along the way, it passes many scenic spots, such as Mirror Lake, trails, and Homer Tunnel. Many small waterfalls formed by melting snow. 2. Enjoy the scenery of the fjord by cruise ship The water tour of Milford Sound is the main way to enjoy the beauty of the fjord. After the sightseeing boat slowly leaves the pier of Milford Sound, you can see the The Baowen Waterfall is more than 100 meters high. When the wind is strong, the water of the waterfall will splash on the pier. On the opposite side of the waterfall is a small gravel pile called a small cemetery, which is the resting place of the whalers and sealers who lived nearby. Continue to drive forward, and on the left is the towering Matthew Peak, which stands directly on the sea. On the other side are Lion Mountain and Elephant Mountain, with very vivid names. Not far away is Tongjiao, which is the relatively channel of the fjord. When the wind is strong, it passes through the mountains, and the wind is amazing. When the boat comes to the Fairy Falls, the bow of the boat will meet directly below the waterfall, and the water of this waterfall is drinkable. After looking at the Tasman Sea from the boat, the boat will slowly turn around and re-enter the fjord, and a fjord cruise is basically complete. Airplane tours and sea kayaking tours are two other great ways to experience mountains, waterfalls, and sheer cliffs. There are also sightseeing boats with underwater viewing windows, allowing tourists to observe coral reefs and other marine landscapes from the bottom of the water. Dolphins, fjord penguins, seals and other aquatic creatures can also be seen in the fjord, especially in the seal headland where a large number of young seals often gather. 3. One of the filming locations of "The Lord of the Rings" As one of the filming locations of "The Lord of the Rings", it attracts many fans to this place.New Zealand · Milford Sound

Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is located in the Mackenzie Basin in the central part of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a lake formed by glacial meltwater, with a surface altitude of approx. 700 m and an area of approx. 80 sq km. The lake water displays a distinct turquoise color, making it stand out in the alpine scenery of the South Island. This unique color comes from fine rock flour ground by glaciers: as glaciers move slowly, they grind rock layers into extremely fine particles, which flow into the lake with the meltwater and remain suspended for a long time. Under sunlight, the water color shifts between milky blue and emerald green, changing with the weather and light. The lake is surrounded by the peaks of the Southern Alps and open meadows. Standing on the lakeshore are the stone-built The Church of the Good Shepherd and a bronze statue of a sheepdog, which together with the lake and mountain scenery behind them form a common photo opportunity. Ascending Mount John on one side of the lake area also offers a panoramic view of the intertwined lake and basin. Lake Tekapo is also part of the Waitaki hydroelectric power system—the lake water is diverted for power generation, and the lake level is artificially regulated, rising and falling regularly within a certain range throughout the year. The lake area is far from city lights and has excellent night sky conditions; on clear nights, you can see the clear Milky Way and Southern Hemisphere constellations, and stargazing is a long-standing local experience. From late spring to early summer each year, the lakeshore is covered in patches of lupins, with pink and purple flower belts spreading along the shore; in other seasons, it takes on a simple color palette composed of snow-capped mountains, clear water, and short grass, with the scenery changing with the seasons. Walking, cycling, or boating along the lake are common ways to experience this alpine lake.Tekapo · 63.9 km from Fox Glacier

We visited this trail in July, during the winter months, and it drizzled on and off throughout the day. A pleasant surprise was seeing a rainbow. The scenery was stunning, with a mirror-like lake and lush greenery resembling a tropical rainforest. The hike was about three kilometers long and took approximately an hour, with constantly changing views – a truly enjoyable experience. Our Mt Cook View Motel was conveniently located just a three-minute drive away.

The West Coast Glacier area is a famous tourist area on the South Island of New Zealand. However, due to the unique geographical location of the West Coast, the warm and humid air currents from the sea are blocked by the Central Mountain Range when they come ashore, and the weather is changeable, so roads here are often closed!

It sounds like a must-visit place. We boarded this trip under the blue sky and white clouds. The young and strong Jiji chose both hiking and helicopter without hesitation. The experience was perfect at once. The scenery is really different near and far. If you have enough physical strength, it is recommended to do both methods at the same time.

One of the famous mountains in the South Island, Mount Cook The top of the mountain is covered with glaciers all year round There is a campsite at the foot of the mountain, which is a good place to camp and watch the stars. The campground is the entrance to Hooker Valley Track Good weather with bright sunshine The trail is very comfortable to walk on There are three suspension bridges along the way, and the river bed can be seen from the suspension bridge. Those who are afraid of heights should think carefully.

Milford Sound is one of the most iconic natural landscapes on New Zealand's South Island, often hailed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," and a UNESCO World Heritage Site within Fiordland National Park. The most classic experience here is a boat tour. The boat glides through the dark waters of the fjord, flanked by steep cliffs carved by glaciers. Mettler Peak soars into the clouds, and Bowen and Stirling Falls flow year-round. After rain, countless temporary waterfalls cascade down the cliffs, creating a truly breathtaking spectacle. With luck, you might spot seals basking on the rocks, or even encounter dolphins and Fiordland penguins. Overall, Milford Sound isn't a "check-off" destination; it's best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. The waterfalls are often more spectacular on rainy days, so don't let rain deter you from your trip. If you have ample time, consider departing from Te Anau or opting for an overnight cruise to avoid the daytime crowds and create a more immersive experience.
