Yunnan Provincial Museum

The Yunnan Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum showcasing Yunnan's history and ethnic culture, housing over 200,000 cultural relics (sets), with strengths in ancient Dian Kingdom bronzeware, Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom Buddhist statues, and historical calligraphy and paintings. The building itself is distinctive: its reddish-brown exterior is composed of irregular stone prism shapes, resembling a stone forest rising from the ground, making it memorable even before entering the exhibition halls. The permanent exhibition follows a chronological sequence, with six themed halls—"Ancient Yunnan," "Dawn of civilization," "Dominance in southern China," "Land of fragrant Buddhism," "Frontier expansion and defense," and "A century of upheaval"—taking visitors from prehistoric times to the modern era, offering a condensed overview of Yunnan's history. Located in a multi-ethnic border region, the artifacts here differ markedly from those in inland museums: bronzeware depicts vivid scenes of animal combat, rituals, and warfare, while the Dian Kingdom's unique shell containers resemble lidded bronze "piggy banks." The Buddhist statues bear the distinct regional style of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, warranting closer attention. The museum's crown jewels deserve dedicated viewing time: the Warring States period bronze ox-tiger table, unearthed from the Lijiashan tombs in Jiangchuan, features a small ox hidden beneath a large ox and a fierce tiger biting the ox's tail, earning the saying "In the north, there's the galloping horse treading on a flying swallow; in the south, there's the ox-tiger bronze table." The Dali Kingdom gilded Avalokitesvara statue with silver halo from the Qianxun Pagoda of Chongsheng Temple in Dali has a unique golden form. Other treasures include Song Dynasty Guo Xi's "Travelers among mountains and streams," Yuan Dynasty Huang Gongwang's "Visiting Dai in Shanxi," and the Ming Dynasty gem-inlaid golden crown. After the visit, you can stop by the nearby Guandu ancient town, making it possible to explore both sites in a day.China · Kunming

The Huajiang Canyon Bridge stands 625 m vertically above the river surface, serving as a benchmark cultural tourism landmark where Guizhou's super project deeply integrates with karst natural wonders. Leveraging the high bridge resources, the service area has created a mountain tourism destination combining high-altitude immersive sightseeing, bridge engineering education, and karst geological exploration. From a 625-meter cloud perspective, it unlocks the dual awe of China's bridge construction marvels and the canyon's hidden wonders. 1. Cloud ladder·fully transparent sightseeing elevator in bridge tower: Located in the south bridge tower (Zhenfeng side), it is a rare fully transparent sightseeing elevator built inside a high bridge tower in China. The elevator climbs steadily at a speed of 4 m per second, taking only 24 seconds to reach the second floor of the bridge tower approx. 625 m above the river. The fully transparent glass cabin provides an unobstructed vertical view. During the ascent, the lush vegetation at the valley bottom, the winding river in the canyon, the steel trusses of the bridge deck, and the towering structure at the tower top unfold layer by layer before your eyes. With a 100-meter abyss beneath your feet, the entire journey immerses you in the visual impact of soaring through the air. It is not only a popular "cloud ladder" check-in spot in the service area but also a step-by-step high-altitude experience. 2. Sky spine·box girder built-in sightseeing hall: A high-altitude view corridor built within the main box girder of the bridge, standing 625 m above the river surface, creating a unique sightseeing space inside the bridge. Walking through the "steel spine" of the bridge, one side features the intricate and robust steel truss structure, allowing close observation of suspension bridge components and appreciation of large-scale engineering wisdom. The other side offers panoramic windows to overlook the majestic Huajiang Grand Canyon, with rolling karst peaks and the river winding like an emerald ribbon through the mountains. The corridor also features bridge science exhibition points, providing an easy-to-understand guide on the construction process and technological breakthroughs of Guizhou's high bridges, combining sightseeing with educational insights. 3. Cloud walk·high-altitude glass hall: Located in the middle section of the box girder corridor, 625 m above the river surface, it is constructed with high-strength special laminated glass. Standing on the transparent glass floor, you can directly overlook the vast canyon abyss, with the Beipanjiang River valley and karst peak forest in full view. When clouds drift in, it feels like floating in a sea of clouds. The hall features a check-in observation deck, cultural and creative exhibition area, and high bridge post office, combining sightseeing, photography, and leisure experiences. It is the most iconic viral photo spot in the entire attraction. 4. Super project·Bridge wonder: The Huajiang Canyon Bridge itself is the core attraction of the service area, and it is also a prominent steel-truss suspension bridge with a remarkable span in China's mountainous regions. The two main towers stand on both sides of the canyon, with a km main span soaring across the sky. The two main cables bear a tensile force of tens of thousands of tons, showcasing the grandeur of a major national project. Whether viewed from afar or up close, one can feel the awe-inspiring transformation of "a natural chasm into a thoroughfare." It is a highly representative landmark in Guizhou's "Bridge Museum" and a recommended destination for engineering and photography enthusiasts.China · Zhenfeng

Puzhehei is a land of karst landscape and scenic agricultural fields. In 2013, it was a filming location for the hit reality TV series Where Are We Going, Dad? Here you can see karst caves, endless acres of lotus blossoms, and the beautiful country landscape that made Puzhehei famous. There are also ethnic minority villages here. The karst caves are a highlight of Puzhehei. Not only are these caves full of all sorts of stalactites, there are also many legends and myths about them. The golden season for visiting Puzhehei is from June to September, when the lotuses are in bloom.China · Qiubei

Baili Azalea Scenic Area

7.2
4.2/5
3.1k reviews
The Baili Azalea Scenic Area is located in the central part of Bijie City, Guizhou, at the border of Dafang and Qianxi. It is a natural wild azalea forest belt, named for its hundred-mile stretch of blooming flowers. Around mid-March each year, azaleas of various colors bloom sequentially from low to high altitudes, with the flowering period typically lasting until late April. The exact dates vary depending on the year's temperature. The peak bloom period is relatively short, so to catch the spectacular sight of flowers covering the mountains, it's best to monitor the bloom status and plan your visit accordingly. The wild azaleas in the forest include dozens of species such as rhododendron delavayi, rhododendron irroratum, and rhododendron anthosphaerum. When in bloom, the red flowers resemble flames, the pink ones resemble rosy clouds, and shades of purple and white intermingle. A unique feature is "different flowers on the same tree"—a single tree can produce blooms of varying shades. This phenomenon is commonly seen in the Pudi and Jinpo scenic areas, as well as the Huangping "Ten-Mile Azalea" zone. The "Azalea King," a thousand-year-old tree with tens of thousands of blossoms, is a must-see for many travelers. The Jinpo area, at a lower altitude, blooms slightly earlier, while Pudi blooms a bit later. If time permits, visiting both areas ensures you don't miss the full spectacle. The region is also home to the Yi and Miao ethnic groups, and the flower season often coincides with traditional festivals like the Yi Flower-Inserting Festival and the Miao Flower-Dancing Festival. The vibrant ethnic costumes and dances complement the floral landscape beautifully. The scenic area is distributed in a belt-like pattern, with some distance between sections, so planning your route in advance is advisable. Even if you miss the blooming season, the Baili Azalea Scenic Area remains pleasantly cool in summer, with its forests, grasslands, and river valleys offering a refreshing retreat.China · Dafang

Fuxian Lake

Fuxian Lake is located between Chengjiang, Jiangchuan District, and Huaning County in Yuxi, Yunnan. As most of the lake lies within Chengjiang, locals also call it "Chengjiang Sea." Accessible by a roughly one-hour drive from Kunming, it is a popular lakeside getaway in central Yunnan. Covering over 200 square km, it ranks as Yunnan's third-largest lake by area after Dianchi and Erhai, but its fame stems from its depth and water volume: with depths exceeding 150 m and a storage capacity of approx. 20 billion cubic meters, it dwarfs Dianchi and Erhai combined. The lake's crystal-clear azure waters boast transparency of up to 7–8 m, inspiring ancient descriptions like "10,000 acres of glazed glass." Highlights cluster along the western and northern shores. On the west, the Luchong scenic area nestles between mountains and the lake. A short climb up Bijia Hill rewards visitors with panoramic views, while ancient banyan trees shade its base. Here, traditional waterwheel fishing persists—locals channel lake water into ditches to catch the endemic kanglang fish. Further south, Mingxing Fish Cave's shallow, clear waters make it a hotspot for sailing boats and kayaking. The northern and eastern shores offer more photogenic scenes: coconut-fringed beaches at Moon Bay Wetland Park, red sand beaches on the Chengjiang side, the cherry blossom-lined Time Trail at Yinghua Valley, and flower fields at Fuhai Bay Wetland Park are all popular photo spots. At the lake's southwestern tip, Yudai River connects to neighboring Xingyun Lake, where the Jieyu Stone creates the curious phenomenon of "two lakes meeting, fish never crossing"—fish from each lake turn back at the stone. Divers have discovered mysterious stone structures on the lakebed, adding to its allure. The nearly 100-km ring road around the lake is ideal for self-drive or cycling tours, with mountain and lake views at every turn. Frequent stops for photos are encouraged, though holiday traffic can be heavy, so allow ample time. Lakeside restaurants serve must-try dishes like copper-pot fish and potato rice, with the tender, small-boned kanglang fish being a local delicacy. In winter, red-billed gulls overwinter here, and the soft morning and evening light creates perfect conditions for sunrise and sunset photography. For natural history enthusiasts, the nearby Maotianshan area on the north shore has yielded abundant Cambrian fossils dating back over 500 million years, worth a detour.China · Chengjiang

Guizhou Provincial Museum

The Guizhou Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum showcasing the history and ethnic culture of Guizhou. The new building, completed and opened in 2017, is a brown rhombus-shaped structure adorned with colorful accents on its exterior, symbolizing "though small as a rhombus stone, it embodies the thousand mountains and islands of Guizhou's culture." The museum features three permanent exhibitions: "Ethnic Guizhou," "Kingdom of Paleontology," and "Historical Guizhou," along with functional areas such as a digital experience hall, intangible cultural heritage theater, and 4D cinema. "Historical Guizhou" unfolds along themes such as the exploration of Guanyin Cave, the traces of Yelang, and the path to provincial establishment: the large number of chipped stone tools unearthed at the Qianxi Guanyin Cave site push back the history of human activity in Guizhou to the early Paleolithic era. The restored scene of "head-covered burials" in Hezhang Kele, the early-known Shizhaishan-type bronze drum of Guizhou, and the weapon molds excavated from the Puan Bronze Drum Mountain site together outline the mysterious bronze culture of Yelang. The Eastern Han bronze chariot and horse unearthed from the Wantu Han tomb in Xingyi is widely recognized as the museum's crown jewel, with the bronze horse raising its head in a neigh and the chariot canopy's bronze as thin as paper. The Ming Dynasty golden phoenix crown excavated from the Yang family chieftain's tomb in Zunyi is inlaid with hundreds of rubies and sapphires, while the sets of glazed pottery figurines in ceremonial procession are equally striking. The "Kingdom of Paleontology" takes visitors back to the oceans of hundreds of millions of years ago in Guizhou: The Guizhouosaurus hui measures only 20-30 cm in length, discovered in Xingyi in 1957, and was the first marine reptile found and named by Chinese scholars. The ichthyosaur and crinoid fossils of the Guanling biota, as well as the Orientognathus from the Panxian biota with its neck accounting for nearly half its body length, are all worth a closer look. "Ethnic Guizhou" highlights the museum's collection: the first floor recreates village scenes with stilt houses and covered bridges, while the second floor showcases ethnic costumes such as Miao ceremonial attire, silver horn headdresses, and Shui horse-tail embroidery baby carriers, with the Miao clothing and silver adornments ranking among the finest in China. The rare Song Dynasty egret-patterned wax-dyed women's outfit unearthed in Pingba and the century-old Qing Dynasty dragon boat collected from the banks of the Qingshui River each carry their own stories. Each of the three exhibitions offers a distinct focus, and a full tour takes you from Guizhou's ancient oceanic past to its present-day multi-ethnic culture, so ample time is recommended for a thorough visit.China · Guiyang

Location: Haigeng Park/No. 16 Hubin Road ↔ Xishan Longmen (West Mountain Dragon Gate), not near the old street, you have to go to the Dianchi Lake area. Experience: Crossing the lake + climbing the mountain, about 20 minutes one way, views of Dianchi Lake, Sleeping Beauty Mountain, and city scenery, great for taking photos. Ticket Price: One way about 59-60 RMB, round trip about 98-100 RMB. Advantages: Easy for lazy people to climb West Mountain, no climbing required, unique views; seagulls in winter. Disadvantages: Stops during strong winds/thunderstorms; long queues during peak season; separate ticket/walking required for Longmen after climbing the mountain; don't confuse with the "Xishan Longmen Cableway". Conclusion: First time in Kunming, taking the Dianchi-Xishan route → worth it; if just exploring the old street → not worth a special trip.

A regular ticket is sufficient, as you'll find that there's simply not enough time to visit the paid attractions if you go at midday. Also, you must bring a film camera next to the Fast sign. It must be a battery-free film camera with manual metering. If possible, bring your own film, as film cameras at the attraction aren't cheap—300 yuan for 36 exposures.

Ms. Zhang Jinxiu's lectures were vivid, engaging, and comprehensive, showcasing the essence of Yunnan and providing me with invaluable insights. Although Yunnan's historical record is somewhat limited, Ms. Zhang's explanations made up for this; she even added an extra half hour to provide a complete overview of Yunnan's history, significantly enhancing the value for money. Thank you!

We arrived at Huajiang Bridge in the afternoon. Although it was during the holiday, there was no congestion in either direction, and traffic flowed smoothly. There were queues to enter and exit parking lots 1 and 2. There's a bridge viewing platform at Yundu, and the Guanlan Restaurant offers excellent views. There's a water curtain light show at 8:30 PM and a drone show at 8:45 PM. The karst waterfall on the bridge is creative; the high bridge and cascading waterfall, illuminated day and night, create a beautiful scene.

When visiting Puzhehai, we specifically brought our children to play in the water. We prepared basins and buckets for water fights, which the kids loved. Middle-aged and elderly people can choose the western or central route, where they don't need to play water fights and can just enjoy the scenery.

Located at No. 187 Zaoshan Road, Yunyan District, Guiyang City, only 1.5 kilometers from the city center, the park was established in 1957 and is a national 4A-level scenic spot. Admission is free (reservations required), Hongfu Temple incense and flower tickets cost 2 yuan, and cable car/zoo services are charged separately. It integrates mountains, forests, springs, lakes, caves, temples, and monkeys, and is known for its "premium location in the city, beautiful in nature." 🌟Highlights & Must-Visit Spots 1. Wild Macaque Troops: A rare semi-wild urban macaque troop (over a thousand individuals) concentrated around the Jiuqu Path and Hongfu Temple. Great for photos, but please do not feed them and keep an eye on your belongings. 2. Hongfu Temple + Jiuqu Path: Guizhou's first temple (during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty). Climb the 383 stone steps of the Jiuqu Path, accompanied by cliff carvings and ancient pavilions; the temple features ancient Buddha caves and Buddhist scriptures, and is a popular place of worship. 3. Qilin Cave: A karst cave where Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng were once under house arrest; it combines natural scenery with revolutionary history. 4. Jianshui Ancient City | A Thousand-Year-Old Lin'an, Hiding Yunnan's Gentlest Slow Time ✨ Having traveled through many ancient cities in Yunnan, I have a particular fondness for Jianshui. Unlike the bustling crowds of Dali and Lijiang, this ancient city of Lin'an, with its thousand-year history, is a truly living ancient city. There's no excessive commercialization or dense clusters of trendy shops; only the rich cultural heritage and the everyday life brimming with life, hiding the leisurely pace of southern Yunnan's life within the ancient alleyways and blue-brick walls passed down through the years. The moment you step into the ancient city, all the anxieties of your journey are soothed. The winding bluestone paths, polished by centuries of wind and rain, are both warm and rustic. Along the streets are well-arranged Ming and Qing dynasty houses and elegant stone archways, their upturned eaves embodying Chinese aesthetics, their mottled walls etched with the marks of time. Deep within the alleys, locals still live and work for generations, with wisps of smoke rising from chimneys in the morning and leisurely conversations in the afternoon—a blend of everyday life and ancient charm, gentle and healing. The spirit of the ancient city is hidden in its cultural heritage passed down through generations. The Chaoyang Tower, standing majestically in the east of the city for six hundred years, bears witness to the vicissitudes of Jianshui over a millennium. Greeting the sunrise and bidding farewell to the sunset, it is the most captivating landmark of the ancient city. The Jianshui Confucian Temple, the largest in China, is tranquil and serene. Ancient cypress trees reach for the sky, and the Pan Pond reflects the surrounding landscape. Its ancient and solemn architecture, with its bracketed eaves and flying corners, exudes a scholarly atmosphere that has continued for a thousand years. A stroll through it is filled with a refined and tranquil ambiance, inspiring awe. Every step reveals a scene of ancient charm, and every brick and tile tells a story. The Zhu Family Garden, hailed as the "Grand View Garden of Southern Yunnan," features winding corridors, secluded courtyards, and exquisitely carved beams and painted rafters. Each courtyard offers a unique view, showcasing the elegant splendor of a once-powerful family. The century-old narrow-gauge railway, winding its way through rice paddies and ancient villages, its whistle whistling softly in the evening breeze, offers an immersive experience of the romance and gentleness of bygone days—a uniquely Jianshui-esque healing romance. What's most captivating is the vibrant, everyday life of the ancient town. Everywhere you look, there are stalls selling grilled tofu, their smoke rising, the crispy exterior and tender interior a testament to Jianshui's ingrained flavor. The fragrant and sweet grass-sprout rice noodles and authentic local barbecue are affordable and delicious, each bite a taste of southern Yunnan. Spend your leisure time sitting by the roadside, watching locals chat and slowly grill tofu, letting time flow by peacefully—a truly serene and enjoyable experience. And here you'll find the unique Jianshui purple pottery, its thousand-year-old kilns burning ever since. Meticulously crafted by artisans, its crackled texture is warm and elegant, embodying the craftsmanship and heritage of southern Yunnan—the ancient town's most precious cultural symbol. By day, admire the ancient architecture and cultural heritage; by night, embrace the vibrant life of the ancient city. By day, Jianshui is like Lin'an, a city steeped in history and culture, with its scholarly atmosphere and gleaming ancient buildings. By night, Jianshui transforms into a gentle, relaxed town, with soft lights, tranquil streets, and the aroma of delicious food carried on the evening breeze, making every journey more pleasant. In Jianshui, there's no need to rush to see everything; simply stroll at your leisure. See the ancient buildings reflected in the moonlight, hear the rumble of the railway tracks, savor the everyday life, and cherish the gentle passage of time. This hidden gem of an ancient city in southern Yunnan tells the story of the most healing slow-paced life in Yunnan through its millennia-old cultural heritage and gentle, vibrant atmosphere. 🌿 (For sightseeing)

I arrived 5 minutes early, and the lecturer, Keju, immediately started and continued until 3:05 PM without a break. He covered everything from ancient Guizhou to Qing Dynasty Guizhou, and the lecture was quite comprehensive. It seemed that Keju really enjoys reading and has a rich knowledge base. He was also quite experienced in interacting with children, and the kids listened with great interest. It was very good.
