Deep in the dense forests of China's Greater Khingan Mountains and in Genhe, known as "China's cold pole," lies the Aoluguya Ewenki Reindeer Tribe, a national 4A-level attraction. The attraction is located 4 km west of the Genhe suburbs. "Aoluguya" means "a place with lush poplar trees" in the Ewenki language. The Ewenki ancestors migrated from the Lake Baikal region to hunt in the vast forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains, living for generations by hunting and raising reindeer. This is the only ethnic settlement in China where reindeer are raised and reindeer culture is fully preserved. It is hailed as "China's last hunting tribe," "the homeland of reindeer culture," "the homeland of birch bark culture," and "a distinctive ethnic village of China's minorities." In 2026, the attraction was honored as one of Inner Mongolia's top 20 tourist attractions for its pristine forest resources and unique reindeer-herding folk culture. As a comprehensive eco-tourism destination integrating sightseeing, stay vacations, and cultural experiences, it fully showcases the Aoluguya Ewenki reindeer-herding traditions, serving as the cultural homeland preserving the Ewenki people's centuries-old hunting civilization. Visitor service center The building takes the traditional Ewenki "cuoluozi" as its design prototype, featuring a grand pointed roof that blends seamlessly into the forested landscape, showcasing strong ethnic identity. As a one-stop comprehensive hub for the attraction, it houses functional areas including a large parking lot, inquiry and ticketing, reception lounge, baby care room, medical clinic, convenience store, milk tea shop, costume rental, and cultural and creative product sales. It also offers traveler-friendly services such as sightseeing shuttle rides, luggage storage, lost and found, free hot water, barrier-free access, and complaint handling, ensuring a seamless experience for travelers throughout their journey—covering dining, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment. Aoluguya Ewenki reindeer culture museum A municipal-level education base and a cooperative site of the China Ethnic Museum, it serves as a core window to showcase the reindeer-herding culture. The venue features primarily eco-friendly wooden decor and is divided into four themed exhibition halls, systematically displaying reindeer culture, intangible cultural heritage, tribal development history, and pan-Arctic ethnic cultures. It comprehensively presents the hunting life, folk traditions, and migratory changes of China's only reindeer-herding tribe, offering an immersive experience to unlock the century-old tribal cultural heritage. Aoluguya art center The attraction's core cultural exchange pavilion regularly hosts activities such as folk art exhibitions, art auctions, and art sketching. Currently featuring the Balajiyi family art exhibition, it blends ancient artifacts with contemporary folk paintings to narrate the legendary stories of the tribal family. Visitors can relax, watch films, and appreciate ethnic art in this dedicated space to quietly experience the cultural essence of Aoluguya. Reindeer theme post office A cultural tourism post office with distinctive tribal features, blending postal services with reindeer culture. Offering mailing, postcards, cultural creative stamps and more, its exclusive reindeer and Evenki-themed creative designs are uniquely stylish. This special check-in spot lets you preserve travel memories and send forest romance through the mail. Primitive tribe deer park The core reindeer habitat viewing area within the attraction is surrounded by pristine forest, serving as the main activity zone for the Aoluguya reindeer. Freely roaming and docile reindeer allow travelers to observe and feed them up close, interact intimately with these forest spirits, and immerse themselves in the unique charm of the Daxing'anling reindeer culture.Genhe · 4.1 km from downtown

Greater Khingan Range

25 reviews
The Greater Khingan Range runs from northeast to southwest, stretching over 1,000 km, and lies between the Northeast Plain and the Mongolian Plateau. It is dominated by Dahurian larch, with birch, Scots pine, and other tree species interspersed, forming a vast cold-temperate forest that preserves a rich forest landscape. The seasonal views here change significantly: in the fall, the needles of the Dahurian larch gradually turn golden, interweaving with the white trunks of birch trees and the evergreen Scots pine, creating a layered, colorful forest scene along the forest roads; in winter, heavy snow covers the forest, and the Genhe area is known as the "Cold Pole of China," with temperatures dropping to below -50°C, while the snowfields and frozen river valleys present a northern winter landscape. The forest is also home to wildlife such as reindeer, roe deer, sables, and snow hares. In the Genhe area, you can also interact with reindeer, learn about the Ewenki reindeer-herding culture, and experience the atmosphere of life in the forest.Genhe · >100 km from downtown

The hometown of Aolu quaint reindeer is about 17 kilometers north of Mangui Town, Genhe City, north of Hulunbuir. Aolu Quanya has the typical local characteristics of the Greater Khingan Mountains. Daxinganling is not only a treasure trove of green, but also an animal paradise. According to incomplete statistics, in addition to tall trees, there are hundreds of species of various plants and dozens of species of animals, which not only have ornamental value, but also have economic value. Spring, summer, autumn and winter, each with its own characteristics, is suitable for tourism in all seasons. Winter is the golden season for the forest industry, and it is also a good time for hunting. Riding a reindeer sleigh to view the world of snow and enjoy the scenery of the Northland; the brook has adjusted the strings taken away by winter, and hundreds of flowers are competing for beauty; The ridges are undulating, the green waves are rising, and it is another season for the harvest of reindeer antlers; in autumn, it is intoxicating, and the "Five Flowers Mountain" dyed by autumn frost, the mountain fruit is harvested, you can taste it, and you can also think of the story of "Brunette Drunk Red Bean" . No matter when you come here, as long as you fall into her arms, you will be impressed by her charm. The birds in the sky, the beasts on the ground, and the swimming fish in the water of the Greater Khingan Mountains have become their sources of food and clothing. In this special geographical environment with high mountains and dense forests and clear mountains and clear waters, the Ewenki hunters keep reindeer that have long disappeared in other parts of China, engage in peculiar fishing and hunting production, and believe in the ancient religion - shamanism. Extensive contacts and frequent exchanges have created and developed another Chinese culture - reindeer culture.Genhe · 4 km from downtown

Genhe Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe: A great family trip! 👍😊 1. Visited on September 26th, catching the last vestiges of autumn colors; there were still 30% of the autumn foliage remaining in the Greater Khingan Mountains larch forest. 💪 2. There were about 10-20 reindeer and sika deer each, a great experience for taking photos. 3. The Evenki folk song and dance performance allowed us to experience the cultural philosophy of this ancient people, living among the deer and making the forest their home. 🌈 4. The staff were very dedicated, displaying the ruggedness and generosity of northerners. Summary: For seeing deer in Genhe, this is the top choice.

This place feels like a primeval forest, mysterious and rugged. My husband and I enjoyed our first road trip to the scenic area. We drove along a road dotted with little red flags, enjoying the forests, lawns, wildflowers, and streams along the way. It was beautiful! It's said to be the largest wetland in Hulunbuir and well worth a visit. It's very close to Genhe City, but don't be mistaken; it's easy to find the Ergun Wetland online, but it's far from Genhe. The park offers a resort, reindeer trekking, rafting, and more.

China's Coldest Village belongs to Genhe City, located in the north of Hulunbuir Prairie in Inner Mongolia. It is the coldest place in China. Records show that the lowest temperature ever recorded was minus 58 degrees Celsius, which is several degrees lower than the Arctic Village in Mohe, Heilongjiang.

Aoluguya is inhabited by descendants of the Ewenki prehistoric tribe, who have been raising reindeer for generations. Reindeer are known as the boat of the forest and the legendary four-in-one. China's last hunting tribe is the only ethnic minority in China that raises reindeer. They hide in the snowy forests of the Greater Khingan Range, survive in extreme conditions of more than 40 degrees below zero, and stick to the most primitive hunting methods and keep reindeer company. Various signs and ways of thinking of the primitive and clan communes are still partially preserved among them. Watch the customs of the ancient Ewenki hunters, taste deer milk wine, and watch Santa Claus' mount in the animation - reindeer. Get close to the reindeer. You can interact with the reindeer and feed them moss. The reindeer is gentle in nature. Don't be scared by its big antlers! Touch its cute little face, take photos, and leave a good memory! The reindeer are amazing. They will chase you and nudge you when they see food. If you don’t take the food, they will let you take pictures calmly. I suggest you don’t buy feed to feed them.

38 kilometers away from Mangui Town is the Iksama Scenic Area. "Iksama" is the Ewenki language, which means "beautiful and wide river" in Chinese. Iksama Resort is located on the east side of the Iksama Bridge, built by the mountains and rivers. The resort has wooden houses, yurts, swimming pools, wildlife parks, forest rest gardens, etc. There is a big willow tree in the center of the resort. It is a single tree that blocks out the sun and can be used by tourists to cool off in summer. About 25 kilometers north of the Iksama Resort, there is a very rare Siberian red pine in the Greater Khingan Range. There are 61 trees in total, all of which are middle-aged forests. Siberian red pine is a famous tree species in the cold temperate coniferous forests of Eurasia and can be called the "King of Taiga". When they were discovered in the early 1950s, they were mistaken for red pines. It was not until Professor Zhao Guangyi of Northeast Forestry University and others conducted nearly a decade of intensive research that they were confirmed to be Siberian red pines. They are revered as "sacred trees" by the Ewenki people. Whenever an Ewenki passes by, they hang various ornaments on the trees and pay homage to them. The origin of these more than 60 Siberian red pines remains a mystery.
