Széchenyi Thermal Bath

7.7
4.5/5
190 reviews

Budapest is known as one of the few spa cities in Europe, with a bathing tradition dating back over two thousand years to the Roman era. The Széchenyi Thermal Bath, located in the city park, is a representative of this tradition. Built and opened in 1913, the pale yellow neo-baroque palace surrounds the outdoor pools, where the steaming water contrasts with the classical facade, creating a highly recognizable landmark in the park. The thermal water here is sourced from deep geothermal wells, with high temperatures and rich in various minerals, making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The bathhouse consists of three outdoor pools and over a dozen indoor pools: the outdoor area features a hot spring sitting pool, an experience pool with a circular whirlpool flow, and a standard swimming pool, while the indoor side houses pools of varying temperatures along with sauna rooms and steam chambers. In the outdoor hot spring pools, it's common to see chess enthusiasts floating boards on the water and playing games while half-submerged in the warm water—a scene that has persisted for years and draws many travelers specifically to witness this classic sight. Even in winter, the outdoor pools remain steamy, with the chilly air outside contrasting the mist rising from the water's surface, making for a uniquely soothing soak in the snow. As night falls, the interplay of lights and steam creates an equally delightful atmosphere for an evening dip. Swimwear is required for entry. Towels, slippers, and swim caps can be rented on-site, and swim caps are usually required in the pool area. Weekends and daytime tend to be crowded, so those seeking a quieter experience may opt for early morning or evening visits. Subway line 1 has a station right in front of the bathhouse, making it very convenient to reach from downtown.

Fisherman's Bastion

4.7/5
655 reviews

Fisherman's Bastion is located on Castle Hill on the Buda side. Named to commemorate the fishermen who defended the Danube in days past, this fortress, together with the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Hungarian State Opera House, is celebrated as one of Hungary's three most awe-inspiring architectural works, and it also serves as an observation point overlooking the Danube and the scenery of the Pest district. Historical background Fisherman's Bastion stands on the banks of the Danube, adjacent to Matthias Church. Construction began in 1895, and the main structure was completed in 1902. This two-tiered grayish-white building is centered on a white spire in the Neo-Romanesque style, and together with several surrounding round towers, it represents the ancestral tribes of Hungary. The towers are connected by corridors, forming a maze-like layout. The several bronze statues on Fisherman's Bastion are also quite striking, among which the more famous is an equestrian bronze statue of a Hungarian king. Built in 1906, it is located between Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion, and the reliefs on its pedestal depict stories from the king's life. Visitor guide Fisherman's Bastion has many steps and pedestrian walkways, and as you climb up, you can enjoy the scenery along the way. Fisherman's Bastion has multiple tower observation terraces. If you encounter windy or rainy weather, it doesn't matter—the arched corridors of the observation terraces are great places to shelter from the rain and escape the heat. When you are tired, you can also rest on the benches in the corridors. Overlooking the view Standing on Fisherman's Bastion, you can take in magnificent views that cannot be fully seen even from the top of Castle Hill: the Danube, Margaret Island, the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and Gellért Hill all come into view. Fisherman's Bastion at night is also full of unique charm, and everything around it looks especially enchanting under the special lighting. Street performers on the terrace add to the atmosphere, making a visit here to enjoy the night view a highly romantic experience, and you can see many couples on dates here. The restaurant of the same name as Fisherman's Bastion has seating in both the north and south corridors of Fisherman's Bastion, offering a very pleasant dining environment. The restaurant has a terrace in the high tower, where drinking coffee while looking at the beautiful surrounding scenery is a delightful enjoyment.

Hungarian Parliament Building

4.6/5
519 reviews

The Hungarian Parliament Building is located on the banks of the Danube in Budapest, serving as the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary and a grand landmark of the country. Designed by architect Imre Steindl, construction began in 1885 and took nearly twenty years to complete. The building features a Neo-Gothic style, with its central dome standing 96 m high—a number echoing the year 896 when Hungarians settled in the Carpathian Basin. The entire structure stretches along the Danube, its symmetrical façade adorned with approx. 90 stone statues of Hungarian rulers and military figures throughout history, with the coats of arms of kings and dukes carved above the window lintels. The building houses nearly 700 rooms, 10 courtyards, and over 20 doorways, with a total staircase length of approx. 20 km. The core highlights of the visit include the ornate grand staircase, the domed hall, and the former upper house chamber. The domed hall displays the Holy Crown of Hungary and coronation regalia, guarded by royal guards, and is a focal point of great attention in the entire building. The grand staircase is decorated with gilded railings, stained glass windows, and marble columns; climbing the steps offers a panoramic view of Kossuth Square. The walls of the former upper house hall hang a massive oil painting by Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy, depicting the historic scene of Hungarians entering the Carpathian Basin. In addition, portraits of historical figures and murals depicting major historical events can be seen throughout the building's interior, and the ceiling features a large ceiling painting created by Károly Lotz.

Godele is only 30 kilometers away from the capital Budapest. This small town is picturesque and famous for the palaces of King Joseph and Queen Elizabeth (Princess Sissi) of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century. The palace was built between 1735 and 1749 and belonged to the noble Grassalkovich family. It was given as a gift to King Joseph and Queen Elizabeth in 1867, but often only Sissi lived. It is the largest Baroque building in Europe except for the Palace of Versailles. The whole building is elegant and atmospheric, and it is also the holiday palace that Princess Sissi loved during her lifetime. After that, it was repeatedly damaged by war and was almost looted in 1945. Only the interior of the church still retains its original appearance. The restoration work began in 1985 and continues to this day. The Manor of Godler Castle is arranged in a double U shape, the main building is in the middle, and there are four side halls on each side. The red roof and the exterior walls mainly in beige, pink and light yellow are very bright. To the north of the main building there is a church, orangery and baths, and to the south there is a park, stables and a horse farm. The palace has a total of 136 rooms. The royal bedroom and the ceremony hall are located in the main building, where many items of King Joseph and Princess Sissi were preserved, as well as many precious portrait paintings. After entering the palace, you can start the tour from the main building. The furnishings in the palace now restore the decoration of the year as much as possible. It is exquisite and elegant. Although it is not too luxurious, it is very comfortable. King Joseph's bedroom was decorated with yellow panelling and grey silk wallpaper, but the king was in Austria all year and did not come here very often. Sissi's suite is located on the second floor, and the walls and decorations are painted in the lilac color she loved when she was alive. The beautiful portrait of Princess Sissi hangs on the wall of the living room, and you can also see the portraits of various politicians who met with the princess. Next to the living room is the study, where you can learn about the scenes of Princess Sissi learning Hungarian language and Hungarian history. Go forward and you will see Princess Sissi's dressing room, where she keeps the clothes she used to wear when traveling and riding horses. Next is Sissi's bedroom, with a full-length portrait of Queen Maria Theresia. Go further and you'll see Sissi's reading room and the bedroom of her Hungarian teacher Ida Ferenczy, now used for the Sissi Memorial Exhibition. After visiting the palace exhibition, don't forget to take a walk in the large garden behind the palace. There is a large open green space, where lavender, hyacinths, daisies and other flowers are planted intermittently, which is very beautiful. There is a marble statue of Princess Sissi in the garden, and the trees along the road are lush, and it is very pleasant to walk in it. You can stop and rest in the cafe in the park, enjoy the beautiful scenery in the park, and imagine the scene of Princess Sissi riding her horse on the meadow.

Matthias Church

7.6
4.5/5
366 reviews

Matthias Church is located on Castle Hill in Budapest and is a neo-Gothic church. The artistic minaret and bell tower on the south side and the magnificent church vault are worth savoring. Historical background In the 13th century, the king ordered the construction of this church at the same time as the construction of the palace. In the 15th century, King Matthias I rebuilt the iconic minaret and bell tower on the south side, and the church was called Matthias Church after that. Since the kings of all dynasties were crowned here, the church is also known as the "Coronation Church". After the Turkish invasion, the church was converted into a mosque, and after several reconstructions, it has formed a multi-faceted style. Architectural pattern The architectural pattern of the Matthias Church is asymmetrically distributed and very consistent. The west façade of the church is decorated with the iconic Gothic rose window, and the south façade is the main entrance of the Matthias Church, with two large gates. The gate of Mary near the tower is carved with the sleeping Virgin Mary. The image of Leah, which is also the relatively complete part of the medieval building preserved in the Matthias Church. There are towering spires on both sides of the Minaret and Bell Tower. The more striking one is the Minaret and Bell Tower on the south side. This highly artistic tower has five floors, and the bottom two floors retain the square style when it was built in the early 13th century. The upper three floors are octagonal, and the towering top of the tower is like a sharp sword straight into the sky. The shield of King Matthias is stored on the third floor of the tower, and the three surviving ancient bells of the church are also stored here, the larger one weighing 3.2 tons. The vaults of the vaulted churches are also very impressive. The vaults are all inlaid with mosaics, and the beautiful patterns formed are particularly dazzling in the sun. There is also a crow statue on the top of the church. According to legend, during the reign of King Matthias, someone tried to plot against him with a poison ring, but the poison ring was taken away by the flying crow. Since then, the crow has become a symbol of auspiciousness in Hungary. The interior of the church is decorated with exquisite frescoes, and the light inside the church through the stained glass is beautiful. Several flags hang from the pillars in the main hall of the church. The main hall is spacious and bright. This huge project was completed in the 14th century and contains the tombs of the Hungarian emperor and his wife. There is a main altar on the west side of the church, which is richly decorated with exquisite details. The paintings on both sides of the golden cross depict the story of the Virgin Mary. There is a museum in the basement on the north side of the Matthias Church, which displays the items that were used by the kings and bishops of the past dynasties and the treasures inherited by the church. You can go and see it. Enjoying music In addition, Matthias Church is also famous for its acoustics, and the music played by its pipe organ is elegant and solemn. Now the church often hosts concerts. At Mass on Sunday, there will also be a wonderful performance by the choir, if you come across it, be sure to listen to it. After visiting the Matthias Church, you can go to the adjacent Fisherman's Bastion to overlook the beauty of the Buda District.

A night cruise on the Danube River is a must-do in Budapest! As night falls, the buildings on both banks light up with golden lights, transforming the city into a fairytale. ✨ This time, I chose a night cruise with Legenda City Cruises (the pier is at Dock 7). The cruise offers audio guides in 30 languages, allowing you to enjoy the evening breeze while listening to the narration – a truly immersive experience! 📍 Highlights: The cruise route passes by the stunning Hungarian Parliament Building (its golden splendor is breathtaking!), as well as iconic landmarks like the Chain Bridge. There are several cruise options available: Daytime Cruises, Evening Cruises, and Candlelit Dinner Cruises. If you're going at night, I highly recommend the Evening Cruise for the best night views! 💡 Tips: 1. The river breeze can be quite strong at night, so remember to bring a jacket. 2. For the best photos, stand on the open deck at the bow or by the window – the results will be amazing!

#St. Stephen's Basilica | A Sacred Place You Can't Miss in Budapest ⛪️ The most moving stop on any trip to Budapest is St. Stephen's Basilica. This basilica, which took 54 years to complete, boasts a 96-meter-high dome, the same height as the Parliament Building, symbolizing the balance between faith and secular life. Stepping into the basilica, you're greeted by gilded murals and exquisite marble sculptures. Sunlight streams gently through the stained-glass windows, creating a serene and solemn atmosphere. The basilica houses Hungary's national treasure—the Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen, the founding king, a relic spanning a millennium, silently narrating the origins and history of the nation. Be sure to buy a ticket to ascend the dome observation deck for a 360° panoramic view of the entire city. The Danube River meanders through the landscape, and the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and the sea of red rooftops are all within sight. Climbing to the top at sunset, with the entire city bathed in the glow of the setting sun, is a uniquely romantic experience in Budapest. The spacious square in front of the basilica is very pleasant; after a long day of exploring, you can sit at a street-side café and quietly admire this magnificent building. If you're lucky, you can also attend a world-class organ concert and immerse yourself in the city's unique artistic charm. When you come to Budapest, don't just rush through; step inside St. Stephen's Basilica and understand the city's faith and gentleness. #HungaryTravel #BudapestCheckIn
