Alhambra

Perched on a hill in Granada in southern Spain, the Alhambra was first built in the 13th century and is a palace and fortress complex that survives to this day from the Nasrid dynasty on the Iberian Peninsula. The complex consists mainly of the Alcazaba fortress, the Nasrid Palaces, and the Generalife, surrounded by towering stone walls, and its interior blends two distinctly different styles: Islamic architecture and Renaissance architecture. The Generalife was the summer palace of its time, known for its terraced gardens and water channels, and is connected to the main palace by a tree-lined promenade. The Nasrid Palaces are the core of the entire architectural complex. The Court of the Lions is centered on a fountain supported by twelve stone lions, with four water channels extending in four directions, making it a classic work of Islamic courtyard architecture. The Court of the Myrtles reflects the Comares Palace in a pool of clear water, serene and elegant. The stalactite-like decoration on the dome of the Hall of the Two Sisters is one of the finer parts of the palace, and the walls are covered with Arabic inscriptions, including both Quranic verses and the poems of court poets, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of the Nasrid dynasty throughout. Climbing the tower at the western end of the Alcazaba fortress offers a panoramic view of Granada centered on the cathedral. The Palace of Charles V is a Renaissance-style palace built after the Christian reconquest of Granada. Its exterior is square, yet a unique circular courtyard is embedded within, surrounded by a two-story colonnade—Doric on the lower level and Ionic on the upper. The ground floor houses the Alhambra Museum, displaying large tin-glazed ceramic vases from the Nasrid period, among which the 14th-century "Gazelle Vase" is particularly exquisite in craftsmanship. The upper floor is the Museum of Fine Arts of Granada, housing Spanish paintings from the 16th century onward, with numerous religious-themed works.Granada · 933m from downtown

Patio de Los Leones

Patio de Los Leones is the main courtyard of thePalace of the Lionsand is widely considered a masterpiece of Nasrid architecture. The courtyard is a long, narrow rectangle oriented east-west, nearly 30 m long and approx. 16 m wide. It is surrounded by a low colonnade supported by over 100 white marble columns, with single columns alternating with groups of two or three, creating a rhythmic pattern of varying density along the arcade. At the north and south ends, square pavilions project into the courtyard, their wooden domes featuring honeycomb-like carvings that some researchers compare to a memory of tent dwellings in the desert. The Fountain of the Lions in the center of the courtyard is the source of its name: a twelve-sided basin is supported by twelve marble lions, with thin streams of water flowing from their mouths. The rim of the basin is inscribed with a poem by the court poet Ibn Zamrak, which likens the Sultan's benevolence to the clear spring water that irrigates the garden. Four water channels extend along the central axes of the courtyard in a cross shape, meeting at the base of the fountain and dividing the marble floor into four sections, corresponding to the traditional Islamic garden imagery of the four rivers of Paradise. The entire courtyard is thus often interpreted as a paradise written in water and colonnades. In the stucco decorations between the capitals and arches, lozenge patterns, vegetal scrolls, geometric motifs, and calligraphic inscriptions are intricately interwoven, while the dado is lined with blue and gold glazed tiles. The halls surrounding the courtyard are renowned for their complex honeycomb vaults; whether looking up at the domes or down at the water channels, one can see scenery different from a mere passing glance.Granada · 824m from downtown

Beautiful place, rich with history and an abundance of instagrammable shots for the social media moguls. I would advise booking tickets in advance as they sell out and make sure you include the Nasrid palace to it and immerse yourself in the history of these wonderful moorish buildings.

The most beautiful architecture in Alhambra, the most brilliant gem of Islamic civilization. A true World Heritage Site, strolling through the palace gardens is like wandering through the river of history.

The exterior is magnificent and rugged, but the interior is exquisite and magnificent. There is no Islamic architectural style, but a thorough Catholic church style. The Catholic Tomb of the Two Kings is next to the chapel, which requires additional tickets to visit.

San Nicolas Square (Plaza de San Nicolas) is a lively place any time of day, with craftsmen, flamenco dancers, and street musicians setting up along the paving stones to entertain visitors. At dusk, crowds of locals and tourists turn out to watch the sunset over the palace grounds before adjourning to restaurants and tea shops on nearby Elvira Street.

This monastery is not the most famous one in Granada, but I think it is worth visiting. The entire scale is very large, especially its main building, which feels like a small palace.

Coming out of the Alham Palace Garden, the snowstorm was even stronger. I barely had a good look at the square, typical European-style exterior of the Carlos V Palace before rushing in. I was immediately shocked by the two-story Roman Colosseum-style circular building. I walked around it again and again, up and down, and took photos inside and out. Carlos V was built in 1527 by the architect Pedro Machuca of Toledo. It is a magnificent Renaissance palace and a very important building in the Spanish Renaissance. Looking down from the air, the whole is square, but it contains an amazing circular double courtyard supported by 32 columns. The palace can be viewed from different angles.

There is an inconspicuous royal chapel in the alley behind the cathedral in the center of Granada. The two most famous kings in Spanish history are buried here, Queen Isabella of Castile and King Fernando of Aragon. Photography is not allowed in the chapel, but it is necessary to understand the history.
