Caversham Wildlife Park
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Perth

Caversham Wildlife Park

7.1
4.7/5
277 reviews

Caversham Wildlife Park is located in Whiteman Park on the northern outskirts of Perth, an interactive wildlife park featuring native Australian animals such as koalas, kangaroos, wombats, possums, Tasmanian devils and quokkas. Its signature experience is the open kangaroo and wallaby activity area, where visitors can walk in and interact with kangaroos face-to-face, gently stroking their backs. Hand-feeding kangaroos is also a long-standing interactive activity in the park, with specific availability subject to on-site arrangements for the day. Koalas are the stars of the park. During multiple daily meet-and-greets, koalas perch on waist- or shoulder-height branches, allowing visitors to take photos freely with their own phones. For those who wish to hold a koala for a photo, spots are limited each day and require on-site registration at the park on a first-come, first-served basis. During peak season, these spots are often snapped up early in the day, so it's best to plan ahead if you want the experience. Additionally, you can see the ever-smiling quokkas and rare Tasmanian devils without having to travel to remote islands. The wombat meet-and-greet is also worth making time for, allowing close observation of these round little creatures and photo opportunities with them. The farm show features activities like sheep shearing, cow milking and sheepdog herding, with audience members invited to feed lambs - particularly popular with family-friendly travelers. The daily scheduled little penguin feeding is quite popular too, followed immediately by pelican feeding. Lizards and snakes in the reptile house can be examined in detail through display windows. The entire park has a relaxed pace, perfect for a half-day leisurely visit.

Whiteman Park

Whiteman Park is located in the northeastern suburbs of Perth, about 10+ km from the city center. It is a large park that combines nature conservation, family-friendly recreation, and nostalgic railway experiences, covering nearly 4,000 hectares, with the vast majority covered by native bushland. The park is located in one of the world's few biodiversity hotspots, with over 400 recorded native plant species and more than 100 bird species. Wild grey kangaroos, emus, and other animals live in the forest, and if you look up, you might even spot wedge-tailed eagles nesting in the park. It also features a dedicated conservation area that protects rare species such as the critically endangered woylie, making it a great place for birdwatching and connecting with nature near Perth. Animal lovers can focus on Caversham Wildlife Park within the park, which houses over 2,000 animals of about 200 native Australian species, where you can hand-feed kangaroos, see koalas up close, and spot wombats. The nostalgic railway is another major highlight here: the small train is pulled by steam or diesel locomotives, traveling along a narrow-gauge railway through protected Banksia woodlands, with kangaroos often appearing outside the windows. Combined with vintage trams, a tractor museum, and a transportation-themed exhibition hall, it is enough to let you see the evolution of transportation in Western Australia. The Children's Forest, planted by children themselves, hides many small sculptures that are worth searching for slowly; and with hiking trails, cycling paths, and large picnic lawns, there is enough to keep a family occupied for a whole day. The park is very large, and most museums and stations are concentrated around the central village area, while the Children's Forest and hiking trails go deep into the forest area. It is recommended to pick up a guide map after entering the park to plan your route and allow enough time. The animals in the woodlands are in their wild state, so please observe them from a distance, and leave the feeding experience for the kangaroos in the wildlife park.

Kings Park and Botanic Garden
No. 10 of Spring Outings in Australia

Kings Park and Botanic Garden

4.6/5
182 reviews

Kings Park and Botanic Garden is situated on Mount Eliza, west of Perth city center, and is adjacent to the University of Western Australia. The approx. 400-hectare park integrates open lawns, the Western Australian Botanic Garden, and vast areas of native bushland, making it one of the few large urban parks in the Southern Hemisphere. The park is elevated, with multiple viewing platforms facing the Perth skyline and the Swan River, making it a perfect spot for panoramic city views and sunset watching, and thus a popular destination for locals to take daily walks and relax. Plants are the stars here. The Western Australian Botanic Garden within the park features a collection of over 3,000 native Western Australian plant species. Among them, the kangaroo paw, the floral emblem of Western Australia, has flower spikes that resemble a kangaroo's front paw, and its red and green coloring makes it easy to spot among the flowers. A treetop walk suspended above the eucalyptus forest allows visitors to stroll at canopy height and overlook the Swan River from above. Every September, when spring is in full bloom in the Southern Hemisphere, the park hosts a decades-old traditional event. Native wildflowers like kangaroo paws and everlastings bloom in vast fields, making it a representative spring wildflower event in Australia. The park also carries deep cultural memories. Before the arrival of Europeans, this hill was an important site for the Noongar Aboriginal people to hold celebrations and gatherings. The park now features an art gallery where you can appreciate local indigenous art. The State War Memorial, located on high ground in the park, commemorates Western Australian soldiers who died in various wars. The Eternal Flame in the plaza burns year-round, and the path leading to the memorial is lined with memorial trees, with plaques honoring the fallen soldiers embedded beneath them. The dawn service for Anzac Day is also held here every year.

The Farm show was the highlight. Some of the exhibits feel dated but I guess it may be intentional to add to the feels. Overall was a good experience to see the wildlife of Australia.

Whiteman Park in Perth is a large botanical garden with a very wide lawn. It is a good place for Perth people to make friends on a daily basis. The scattered trees on the lawn are like huge parasols, which are particularly beautiful and unique. It has a lonely and romantic beauty and is a good place for taking pictures.

The beach is beautiful, the infrastructure is very complete, and you can watch the sunset at night. The UV coefficient is very high, remember to use physical sunscreen. It is recommended to stay in a hotel by the sea, especially an apartment hotel, and walk out to the WWS supermarket to buy something to cook for yourself. Don't be too fragrant! You can choose the time to play by yourself. If you just want to relax, it's okay to lie down for a morning.

King's Park in the city center is also a good place to enjoy the city landscape. The surrounding scenery is very beautiful and it is very comfortable to walk around. There are also complete restaurants and small gift shops in the park. It is a good attraction and worth a visit!

There's a long-term parking lot at the boat stop for $12 a day. Overall, the trip was great for families. The boat tickets are indeed expensive, as are the island's shuttle bus. But my wife and I loved it; the kangaroos alone were enough. The views from the key parking spots were spectacular. Kangaroos were everywhere. Back at the pier, buy some bread and sit by the roadside; a kangaroo will approach you. It wants bread, but it's best to feed it leaves.

The Australian version of Gold Miner. Follow the narrator to watch a live demonstration of gold bar melting and casting, exchange gold equivalent to your own weight for currency, and press commemorative coins on site, which is quite interesting.

The Swan Bell Tower is a bell tower located in the heart of Perth, Australia, and is one of Perth's iconic landmarks. Built to commemorate Western Australia's 150th anniversary, it officially opened to the public in 2009. Visiting the Swan Bell Tower, you can take an elevator to the top of the tower (its six floors), where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the entire Perth city, including Fremantle Harbour, Kings Park, and the Swan River. On a clear day, you can even see the Swan Mountains in the distance. Inside the bell tower is a small museum showcasing the history and culture of Perth and Western Australia. You can learn about the construction of the bell tower and details of Western Australia's 150th anniversary celebrations. Overall, a visit to the Swan Bell Tower is a great way to learn about the history and culture of Perth and Western Australia, while also offering a stunning view of the city.

The aquarium is small but had fun there. Took the Glass Bottom Boat and saw many sea creatures close-up. Had the opportunity to feed them and the kids enjoyed the entire trip to AQWA. Love the automated underwater tunnel where we get to see many different species and also had the chance of seeing the divers feeding the sea creatures. On top of that, there are also areas where we can touch some of the sea creatures such as starfish and even little sharks. last but not least thanks to the staff at the AQWA. All of them were very friendly and gave us a good introduction of the aquarium and the sea creatures they have. Awesome!
