Hallasan Mountain, one of South Korea's three most famous mountains, is located in the center of Jeju Island. At 1950 meters, it is the highest peak in South Korea. Hallasan is an extinct volcano, with Baekrokdam, a volcanic lake with a diameter of 500 meters, at its summit. Due to its high altitude, the climate exhibits a vertical distribution from subtropical to frigid zones, and the mountain is home to over 1800 plant species and over 4000 animal species. In 1970, Hallasan was designated a Korean National Park, and in 2007 it was designated a World Natural Heritage Site.
