Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple

4.3
Varadharaja Perumal Temple is located in Teganjipuram, India. It is one of the important Vaishnavism holy sites in the region and the main temple among the 108 "superb treasures". The seated statue of Vishnu enshrined in the main hall of the temple is carved from black stone. It is shaped like Vishnu holding a dharma wheel and a conch, sitting on a lotus throne. The outer corridor of the sanctuary is decorated with bas-reliefs from the Chola and Pallava periods. The temple architecture combines Chola and Pallava styles, with granite and sandstone as the main building materials. The columns of the porch are engraved with delicate animal and plant patterns, and the top of the main hall is covered with multi-layered pyramid-shaped towers. A pair of gold-plated and silver-plated lizard sculptures hang at the entrance of the sanctuary. The temple also preserves the emerald necklace donated by Robert Clive, which is still used for festival decoration. As the core place of Vaishnavism in South India, the temple holds large festivals every year, and daily pujas follow tradition. The temple is now managed by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Charity and Endowment Committee and is well maintained on a daily basis. It is open to tourists from early morning to evening, and traditional dress codes must be followed when entering.Kanchipuram · 2.8 km from downtown

Krishna's Butter Ball

Krishna's Butter Ball

4.1
Krishna's Butter Ball is a massive balanced rock in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India, located near a complex of ancient rock carvings. This hemispherical granite boulder, weighing approximately 250 tons and measuring approximately 5 meters in diameter, rests securely on a natural rock face approximately 1.2 meters high. It appears poised to fall at any moment, yet miraculously maintains its balance. Legend has it that the rock symbolizes the Hindu deity Krishna's childhood experience of eating butter. The rock is approximately 1,200 years old and remains firmly in place to this day. In 1908, Arthur Havelock, then the Governor of Madras, attempted to move it using seven elephants, but failed. This further reinforced its mystique as a natural wonder. Krishna's Butter Ball is part of the Mahabalipuram Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and attracts countless visitors to witness this remarkable blend of nature and culture.Mahabalipuram · 872m from downtown

The Shore Temple, located on the coast of Kanchipuram, was built by King Narasimha Varman I in the late 7th century. Originally, there were seven temples, but years of erosion and weathering by wind and waves have slowly eroded away six of them. The temple itself is small, but its elegant form represents a masterpiece of Pallava art. Constructed entirely of granite, it represents one of the earliest examples of stone temples in South India, reflecting the simple and elegant architectural style of this period.Mahabalipuram · 1.4 km from downtown

Mamallapuram, also known as Seven Pagodas or Mahabalipuram, is a town in Chengalpattu district in the southeastern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.[1] It is on the coastline 58 kilometres (36 mi) south of the city of Chennai. An ancient historic town and a bustling seaport in the 1st millennium CE, now a beachside tourism center with a group of Hindu monuments declared as UNESCO world heritage site, it is one of the most visited towns in South India.[1][3] Mamallapuram was one of two major port cities by the 7th century within the Pallava kingdom. Along with economic prosperity, it became a center of a group of battle monuments carved out of rock. These are dated to the 7th and 8th centuries: rathas (temples in the form of chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), giant open-air rock reliefs such as the famous Descent of the Ganges, and the Shore Temple dedicated to Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Krishna and others.[1][3] The contemporary town plan was established by the British Raj in 1827.Neolithic burial urn, cairn circles and jars with burials dating to the 1st century BC have been discovered near Mamallapuram. The Sangam age poem Perumpāṇāṟṟuppaṭai relates the rule of King Thondaiman Ilam Thiraiyar at Kanchipuram of the Tondai Nadu port Nirppeyyaru which scholars identify with the present-day Mamallapuram. Chinese coins and Roman coins of Theodosius I in the 4th century CE have been found at Mamallapuram revealing the port as an active hub of global trade in the late classical period. Two Pallava coins bearing legends read as Srihari and Srinidhi have been found at Mamallapuram. The Pallava kings ruled Mamallapuram from Kanchipuram; the capital of the Pallava dynasty from the 3rd century to 9th century CE, and used the port to launch trade and diplomatic missions to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.Mamallapuram Shore Temple View from beachAn 8th-century Tamil text written by Thirumangai Alvar described this place as Sea Mountain ‘where the ships rode at anchor bent to the
