Yala National Park

4.7/5
246 reviews
Yala National Park is located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, covering an area of about 979 square kilometers. It is the largest national nature reserve in Sri Lanka, second only to Villepotu National Park. The park not only has a diverse ecological environment, but is also known for its numerous wildlife. Park History Designated as a protected area in 1900, it was designated a national park in 1938 along with Verapatu National Park. Yala National Park consists of five areas, only two of which are open to the public. One area is called Ruhuna National Park (Ruhuna National Park), also known as Sierra, is the main area to see leopards and elephants, where there are many tourists; another area is called Kumana National Park (Kumana National Park) , also known as East Yarra, is a prime area for bird watching. Biological resources There are wet monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, semi-deciduous forests and tropical xerophytes, in addition to grasslands, beaches, rivers, lakes, swamps and wastelands. There are a large number of native Sri Lankan animals in the park. Groups of white-headed cranes inhabit the pond in the park. Crocodiles, peacocks and monkeys are all common animals in the park. Indian sloth bears, leopards, Asian elephants, buffaloes, wild boars, sika deer, etc. are also the objects of people's pursuit. In Yala, you can see almost all the wild animals in Sri Lanka. There are more than 30 kinds of mammals and 215 kinds of birds. Among them are the herds of wild elephants and the elusive cheetah. March-April is a good time to visit Yala National Park towards the end of the dry season, when the water level in the park is low and many animals come out to drink and forage. In the rainy season, the animals will be scattered to various places. Highlights 1 Sri Lankan Leopard Sri Lankan leopard is undoubtedly the biggest attraction. Seeing the leopard is the luck of visiting Yala. The leopard in Sri Lanka is said to be slightly different from the leopard in mainland India and is a unique breed of this region. A good time to observe leopards is from January to July each year. In Sri Lanka's safari parks, a large number of leopards can be observed. Large rocks and hills in the garden are common places for leopards to perch on branches near rocks. Aspect 2 Elephant The Runugam National Park near Yala is like an elephant passage, connecting Yala and Udawalawe National Park. Elephants migrate here from May to August. Aspect 3 Birds The birds here are very rich, from the raptor eagle to the cute little waterfowl, the hoary crane, the red river, the heron, the purple heron, the night heron and so on. They can be found in ponds and bushes in the garden. Peacocks flying with open screens and black-tailed jungle fowls, the national bird of Sri Lanka, are often seen on the roadside. Aspect 4 In the reptile zoo, there are huge crocodiles basking in the sun everywhere in the swamps and reservoirs, as well as lizards, small chameleons and poisonous snakes. Scenic tours - tour time General tourists' tours can be divided into three types: one is a half-day tour, starting from Tissa Hotel at 5:30, arriving at the park after an hour's drive, starting a half-day tour, and generally returning at 11:00-11:30 ; another evening tour around 15:00-18:30; and a full day tour from 5:30 to 18:30. Scenic tours - tourist vehicles can only take jeeps when entering Yala National Park. For safety reasons, you cannot get off the bus without authorization during the visit. Nearby Tissamaharama has many local tour companies offering safari trips. Most tourists book a chartered itinerary the day before, and the driver will lead the tour after entering the park. To avoid danger, they can only get off the bus in the specified area on the way. Although the road in the park is very difficult to walk, and the path through the dense forest is very bumpy, the fresh air and the eye-catching woods make you feel relaxed and happy. Tissa Maharama Lake is just outside the town, 1.5 km from the town centre. Although the lake is not big, the surrounding scenery is beautiful, and the trees around the lake are tall. In the evening, there will be a large number of egrets perched on it, which looks like a tree covered with white flowers from a distance. A wide lakeside trail has been built on the way around the south bank of the lakeside trail, where you can watch various birds and experience the good natural ecology of Sri Lanka. When the sun goes down, you can take a walk by the lake, and the scenery is also very pleasant. The south of the other reservoir is the B464 road, which leads to the religious holy place Katla Gam.Hambantota · 14.3 km from Kataragama

Sigiriya Lion Rock

Sigiriya Lion Rock is the site of a palace in the sky built atop a nearly 200m-high orange-red giant rock. In the 5th century, King Kashyapa I built the royal palace on the summit, and during his 18-year reign, he completed this complex that integrates a palace, gardens, and a fortress. It was later lost in the jungle for a long time until it was rediscovered in modern times, and today it is a representative monument in Sri Lanka's Cultural Golden Triangle. The entire site unfolds layer by layer from bottom to top. At the foot of the mountain are symmetrical water gardens surrounded by a moat. The ancient water system was ingeniously designed, and the fountains can still spout water by gravity during the rainy season. A pair of giant lion paws halfway up the mountain are the remains of the lion-shaped palace gate from that time. The brick lion body and head have long since collapsed and weathered, and now one can only imagine its former grandeur from the stone steps between the paws. Upon reaching the summit, the platform retains the ruins of the palace and reservoirs. Looking out from the height, the jungle and distant mountains are all in view.Sri Lanka · Sigiriya

Minneriya National Parkis located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, situated between the two ancient cities of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, and is one of Sri Lanka's well-known wildlife viewing destinations, covering an area of approx. 90 square kilometers. The park features a rich natural environment, where forests, shrublands, and lakeside grasslands interweave, creating a diverse tropical ecological view. Dense woodlands provide habitats for wildlife, while open grasslands serve as important areas for animals to forage and roam. With the changing seasons, the park's waters, vegetation, and grassland views also present different appearances, making it full of natural charm. The lake surface reflects the surrounding green vegetation, and the lakeshore is open with good visibility, making it a representative natural view of the park. The lake and the surrounding terrestrial ecosystems are interconnected, together forming the park's unique wetland and grassland environment.Sri Lanka · Polonnaruwa

Colombo National Museum is the national museum of Sri Lanka. Opened in 1877, it houses tens of thousands of artifacts and is an ideal place to quickly understand the history of this island. The museum is housed in a two-story, Italian-style white building. With its arched colonnades and a large lawn in front, the white facade is very photogenic. The first floor is arranged chronologically, while the second floor is organized by theme, showcasing everything from prehistoric stone tools to the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa periods, and finally the Kingdom of Kandy. The museum library also houses thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts, offering a window into the literary heritage of ancient Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka · Colombo

Dambulla Cave Temple is a famous Buddhist cave temple in Sri Lanka, carved into a massive rock rising over 100 m above the plains. Legend has it that in the 1st century BC, King Valagamba took refuge here for many years to escape invaders. After regaining his throne, he converted the caves into a Buddhist temple. Subsequent kings continued to expand and renovate it, gradually forming the current layout of five interconnected caves. The caves preserve over 2,000 square meters of murals painted with natural pigments like tree sap, as well as more than 150 statues. The themes are mostly related to the life of the Buddha. Monks still practice here today, so it is not merely a display site.Sri Lanka · Dambulla

Located on the east side of the University of Colombo, the square is an iconic cultural square and the place where Sri Lanka's independence ceremony on February 4, 1948 was held. Looking around here, the White House is faintly visible in the distance. Many young people rest and read here, which is a good place to find a comfortable and quiet place. 1. "Kandy Culture" Visit the Memorial Hall, you will see elephants, lions and patterns describing the history of Sri Lanka's Buddhism carved on the pillars. There are also 60 stone lions symbolizing the Sinhalese around the memorial hall. Each lion represents a king, reflecting the style of Kandy culture. 2. The Independence Hall in the center of the Independence Hall Square is built to imitate the hall where pilgrims were received during the Kandy Dynasty. The green lawn around the square reflects the Independence Memorial Hall, surrounded by stone lions, and there is a statue of D.S Senyonayake on the back of the Memorial Hall. 3. Shopping There is also a shopping center called Arcade. There are many brand stores in the European-style building. It is quite cost-effective when the products are discounted.Sri Lanka · Colombo

St. Mary's Church - Grand Street

102 reviews
St. Mary's Church - Grand Streetis located in the city center of Negombo, Sri Lanka, and features a neoclassical architectural style. The exterior facade is primarily a soft, creamy white, with symmetrical and imposing colonnades. The architectural lines are simple and solemn, creating a striking visual contrast with the surrounding streets. Inside, the high, spacious nave creates an open and solemn atmosphere. The elegant, simple walls harmonize with the orderly architectural structure, giving the entire space a serene and dignified feel. In sharp contrast to the simple walls are the rich, exquisite religious frescoes on the nave ceiling. The stained glass windows inside the church are also a major highlight. Sunlight streams through the glass, casting soft, shifting colors onto the floor, walls, and altar, adding a dynamic play of light and shadow to the solemn space. As the angle of the light changes throughout the day, the colorful light and shadows complement the ceiling frescoes, giving the entire nave a rich visual depth.Sri Lanka · Negombo

We visited Minneriya hoping to see the famous elephant gatherings, but there were surprisingly few. The park’s terrain is mostly forested, with limited open plains for wildlife viewing. In contrast, Yala National Park offered a much richer experience with more wildlife sightings, including elephants.

If you want to learn about the history of Sri Lanka this is a great place to start. The museum shows pre-historic finds and the earliest civilization of Sri Lanka as well as the Colonial era and the history or resistance to those colonial powers. As a history teacher I really enjoyed the museum.

The Dambulla Caves, a world cultural heritage, is the largest, most famous and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka. A half-day tour of the caves was arranged, and 4 impressions are still fresh in my memory. 1. The antiquity of the caves. The Dambulla Caves were built in 89 BC (some say 1st-2nd century AD), earlier than the Mogao Caves built in 366 AD in my country. After more than a thousand years of unremitting efforts, a spectacular pattern of 5 caves connected to each other was formed between the rock walls on the hillside of the giant stone (186 meters high). 2. The beauty of the statues. The 2,100 square meters of murals and 157 Buddha statues in the caves are all treasures of Buddhist art. The most beautiful murals. The Buddha murals in Cave No. 2-Great King Cave, from the cave ceiling to the cave wall, are completed in one go, and are magnificent. The most beautiful statues. The 14-meter-long reclining Buddha in Cave No. 1-Heavenly King Cave is huge in size, peaceful in expression, and graceful in lines. 3. Fun of monkeys. It takes more than 20 minutes to walk up the mountain road with more than 400 steps from the foot of the mountain to the cave. All the way up, the view is wide, the air is fresh, and monkeys can be seen everywhere in groups, playing, being coy, or exercising, which are very cute. The locals told us: the reason for depositing shoes is not to prevent people from stealing, but to prevent monkeys from snatching them. 4. Pain in feet. You can only enter the cave after taking off your shoes to show your piety. The hot sand and the stones hurt your feet. My feet hurt so much... No one ever reminded me to wear thick socks.
