Zhouzhuang

Zhouzhuang is a world-renowned water town in Jiangnan, where waterways crisscross the town and Ming and Qing dynasty architecture is built along the rivers. The ancient town is surrounded by water on all sides, with various waterways forming a "well" shape embedded in the town, creating a unique layout where streets are formed along the water and markets are based on the streets. More than ten ancient stone bridges built during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties are well-preserved over the water alleys, and the ancient bridges, water alleys, and old houses together form a vivid picture of "small bridges, flowing water, and households." Among them, the Twin Bridges consist of Shide Bridge and Yong'an Bridge, one arched and one beam-style, one round and one square, which became famous due to the oil painting by artist Chen Yifei. The town has numerous ancient residential courtyards, most of which are Ming and Qing dynasty buildings. The Shen Hall was built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty by descendants of Shen Wansan. It features seven successive courtyards and five gate towers, with over a hundred rooms of various sizes, making it one of the larger Qing dynasty residences preserved in the ancient town. The brick-carved gate tower in the hall is finely detailed, and the zouma lou (galleries connecting the buildings) layout is quite rare among similar structures. The hall also houses a seated statue of Shen Wansan and the legendary "treasure bowl." The Zhang Hall, originally named Yishun Tang, is said to have been built by descendants of Xu Kui, younger brother of Xu Da of the Ming dynasty. In the early Qing dynasty it passed to a family surnamed Zhang and was renamed Yuyan Tang, commonly known as Zhang Hall. It is one of the few surviving Ming dynasty buildings in the town. A small river flows through the rear courtyard, and the unique layout where "boats pass through the house" leaves a lasting impression. Boating through the water alleys on a sculling boat is a classic experience in the ancient town. Wooden boats draped with blue calico glide slowly along, and the boatmen often sing Wu folk tunes, filling the water town with charm. To the south of the ancient town lies the Nanhu Autumn Moon Garden, inspired by the "craving for water shield soup and perch" allusion, with expansive lake views that make it a wonderful place to savor the poetry of Jiangnan. The ancient town is small enough to explore on foot. After night falls and the lights come on, reflections shimmer on the canals, offering a beauty distinct from the misty, rainy daytime scenery. The attraction also features "Encounter Zhouzhuang," an immersive multidimensional theater production that weaves together a Song Dynasty water town tableau through the stories of two travelers who share the same name across different eras.Kunshan · 31.4 km from downtown

Luzhi Ancient Town

5.4
4.5/5
2.4k reviews
Luzhi Ancient Town is located 25 km southeast of Suzhou city center. With fewer tourists than other popular water towns, it's perfect for a leisurely weekend stroll. Cross several "three-step-two-bridge" structures (double bridges) in this "town of bridges," admire the black-tiled, white-walled buildings along the river, and discover the setting of the story "An Extra Harvest of Three to Five Bushels" from middle school Chinese textbooks. The ancient town of Luzhi was originally named Fuli because of the "Fuli Pond" in its west. Later, it was renamed Luzhi because of the Zhigang Canal in its east, which led to six different locations and whose shape resembled the Chinese character "甪" (lu).Luzhi". The ancient town is as old as the ancient city of Suzhou, with a history of over 2,500 years, predating other towns in Suzhou such asZhouzhuang and Tongli ancient townsFar more distant. If you want to buy a combo ticket for small attractions, you can enter through the main gate of Luzhi Ancient Town on Xiaoshi Road, where the ticket office is located. If you don't purchase an admission ticket, you can enter the ancient town from any road. Since the ancient town is small with only one main street—Nanshi Shangtang Street-Nanshi Xiatang Street—no matter where you enter, you will eventually reach the north-south main street. The attractions are mainly on both sides of the main street. On the west side of the northern section of the main street is the introduction to the Xiao residence, built during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty; on the east side is a memorial hall with Qing architectural style. The west side of the central section of the main street features Baosheng Temple, with the partially open yet already impressively large Qing-era mansion Shen residence to its south. The east side of the central section houses the newly constructed Jiangnan Cultural Garden, where the Luzhi Historical Artifacts Museum displays relics unearthed from Chenghu Lake ruins, corroboratingLuzhiWith a long history, the Luzhi water town women's clothing museum displays unique items such as headscarves and clothes made of blue calico patchwork.LuzhiWomen's clothing. Located in the town center, near the northwest corner of Jiangnan Cultural Park, it represents the ancient town's signature three-step-two-bridge feature.Sanyuan bridgeAnd Wan'an bridge. At the southern end of the main street is the Wansheng rice shop (Luzhi water town agricultural tools exhibition hall), which was renovated according to the article, restoring the layout of the rice shop and displaying various agricultural tools. Among them, Baosheng Temple is an attraction worth visiting in the ancient town. It was first built in the second year of the Tianjian era of the Liang Dynasty (503 AD) and has a history of over 1,500 years. The nine clay arhat statues crafted by renowned Tang Dynasty artists in the temple's antiquities hall are particularly precious. Unlike the static arhats lined up on both sides of the main hall in other temples without any background, these arhats are vividly depicted doing their own activities against a backdrop of mountain and water carvings. To the west of Baosheng Temple stands a shrine dedicated to a late Tang Dynasty poet. If you want to cruise the ancient town, head 100 m east of the ancient town ticket office to find the cruise dock. Each boat costs CNY 150 and seats 4 travelers. A round trip takes approx. 30 mins. Note that payment is required per boat (CNY 150 per boat), and there are no individual tickets. You can team up with other travelers to share the cost. Many travelers dress in ancient costumes for photos in the ancient town, and you can also pay to join the costume photography experience. If you want to taste the ancient town's delicacies, you can go to the side streets at the southern end of the main street—Xihui Shangtang Street and Xihui Xiatang Street along the river, where shops are lined up and you can enjoy specialty foods like Fuliji pork knuckle, Fuliji duck, and Aozao noodles. After September, fresh eight-pointed red water chestnuts are available in Luzhi Ancient Town. For local specialties, you can choose Luzhi dried radish, especially the small round ones which are particularly good. Luzhi Ancient Town has stays available, but since you can return to Suzhou or Shanghai city center on the same day after visiting the town, staying overnight isn't really necessary. If you do want to stay, we recommend the Composition Museum, which displays study desks, chairs, old composition books, newspapers, and has compositions posted all over its walls, offering a strong scholarly atmosphere.Suzhou · 14.9 km from Kunshan

Humble Administrator's Garden

8.8
4.6/5
87.8k reviews
The Humble Administrator's Garden is a famous garden in Suzhou, with water as its central feature, surrounded by artfully arranged rockeries and exquisite courtyard buildings, all flourishing with plants. This exemplary Jiangnan garden, along with Beijing's Summer Palace, Chengde Mountain Resort, and Suzhou's Lingering Garden, is collectively known as the "four great gardens of China" and has been inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage list. The garden's design is exquisitely crafted, offering "a unique view with every step" as you explore, with every corner embodying the charm of Jiangnan water towns. Its winding paths lead through layered archways and stone walls with intricate cutouts, where no two pavilions or windows are alike—each perfectly complemented by surrounding flora to create picturesque scenes. You could easily spend hours photographing here. The garden is divided into eastern, central, and western sections, each with distinct features. The central garden largely preserves the simple and natural style of Ming Dynasty gardens, representing the essence of the entire complex and warranting thorough exploration. The eastern garden offers more open spaces, while the western garden features exquisite architecture. At the southern end of the Humble Administrator's Garden lies Suzhou Garden Museum, China's specialized museum dedicated to garden art. Humble Administrator's Garden features major views including Lanxue hall, Hanqing pavilion, Yuanxiang hall, Xiangzhou boat, Thirty-six mandarin ducks hall, and bonsai garden. Two particularly interesting sights stand out: first is the "borrowed view of Beisi pagoda"—when looking westward from the east garden, the pagoda 1 km away appears within the garden, creating a popular photo opportunity for travelers, with this borrowed scenery technique visible throughout the grounds during exploration. Second is the "small flying rainbow bridge" in the central garden, where vermilion railings reflected in water resemble a rainbow, forming an exceptionally beautiful view centered on this bridge. The garden's floral displays change with the seasons: azalea exhibition in spring, lotus exhibition in summer, chrysanthemum exhibition in fall, and fruit bonsai exhibition around the Spring Festival.Suzhou · 31.5 km from Kunshan

It wasn't peak season, so it was a great place to stroll around. There were fewer people, and more seating options at the back. Seating was limited at the beginning. Tea shops were a bit pricey, but that's to be expected since it's a tourist area. There are plenty of restaurants near the exit, so you can choose according to your needs. Just ask about the prices beforehand; there are several ticket options, but they're all reasonably priced.

Jinxi is known for its "thirty-six bridges and seventy-two kilns," with the iconic Ancient Lotus Bridge spanning Wubao Lake, its reflection creating a picturesque scene perfect for photos. The combined ticket includes access to multiple sites such as the Ancient Brick and Tile Museum, Lianchi Zen Temple, Xuanjuan Hall, and the former site of the Chenmu District Office. The cluster of museums is a major highlight, offering rich cultural content. The ancient town has a strong local atmosphere, with many locals and minimal commercialization. A stroll along the river, enjoying the lake breeze, and exploring for 2-3 hours is just right. Highly recommended for those who appreciate a tranquil water town.

Qiandeng Ancient Town is a "living" ancient town, full of history and everyday life. The Gu Yanwu Former Residence Patriotic Education Base, the Gu Jian Former Residence and the ancient stage showcasing the origins of Kunqu Opera, and the bluestone paths of North Street and South Street all present its unique ancient town characteristics.

I always thought I'd been to Luzhi before, but it felt very unfamiliar today. I wonder if my previous assumptions were just a misperception. There's a strong scholarly atmosphere here; the tranquility isn't just literal, it's on a higher level. Even during the National Day holiday, it wasn't crowded, though. Luzhi has a rich cultural heritage that you'll feel when you go there.

Absolutely stunning garden – a must-visit! The garden was absolutely stunning! It was huge, and we ended up exploring it for so long. There were quite a lot of people, but the size of it really makes up for it because many places were still empty and absolutely beautiful. We also loved exploring the bonsai tree exhibition, which was very cool! It's such a nice spot to unwind, relax, and just enjoy the surroundings. I would really recommend it to friends.

There were so many people during the New Year's Day holiday. I queued for almost 3 hours. Of the total 3 hours for the visit, more than half an hour was spent waiting for clothes and changing. If you exceed the time limit, you have to pay 100 yuan. The time limit is unreasonable. It should be calculated based on the visit time, not the time for changing clothes. The queue time is too long during holidays when there are many people. It is not worth it.

Located at the foot of Yufeng Mountain in the heart of Kunshan City, Tinglin Park is a super unique free park! It boasts numerous historical sites, with beautiful scenery at every turn, allowing you to experience a rich historical atmosphere with just a casual stroll! 📜 ⛰️Must-Visit Highlights: ✨Yufeng Mountain: Although not very high, the view from the summit overlooks the entire city of Kunshan! The view is amazing and definitely worth the climb! The wind at the top is incredible, perfect for taking stunning photos 📸 ✨Ancient Architecture: With its blue bricks and gray tiles, it exudes the charm of Jiangnan (southern China). Walking through it feels like stepping back in time; every corner is a potential photo opportunity! ✨Shady Paths: Surrounded by trees, these paths are perfect for leisurely walks. The air is incredibly fresh, leaving you feeling completely healed 🍃 📚Cultural In-Depth Tour: The three treasures of Kunshan within the park are a must-see! Kunshan stone, Qionghua (a type of Chinese magnolia), and twin lotus blossoms—each piece tells a story! There are also the culturally rich Tinglin Three Museums: Gu Yanwu Memorial Hall, Kunqu Opera Museum, and Kunshan Stone Museum, offering a wealth of cultural content! History buffs should definitely set aside half a day to explore and savor the experience. I highly recommend including this in your itinerary when visiting Kunshan! It's incredibly cost-effective—experience the charm of Jiangnan gardens without spending a penny! 🙌 Even locals visit this place countless times; you definitely won't be disappointed!

The "Extreme Speed" ride is worth seeing. For the brave, there are drop towers, roller coasters, and other rides. There are also many options for younger children. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit; it's better than those ancient towns.

The experience was great, and the kids really enjoyed it. We bought a skiing and snow play package. The kids learned quickly; after only falling twice, they were skiing normally again. Three hours is about enough if you don't ski much. We had lunch at the snow-view restaurant at noon. 😅
