Indian Museum

Indian Museum officially opened on April 19, 1953, to celebrate American Indian Day, as part of the research division of SPI (Indian Protection Service). SPI was created by Marechal Rondon in 1910 and remained the agency responsible for assisting indigenous people until FUNAI was established in 1967. Indian Museum operated in the residence on Maracanã Mata Machado Street until it moved in 1978. This old building, which still exists today, was managed by the National Supply Company and the Ministry of Agriculture, and was later purchased by the Rio de Janeiro State government. The current residence is neoclassical in style, built in 1880 at the request of a businessman in the food industry. After the merchant's widow died, his children decided to sell the property to the federal government, and it was listed for sale in 1967.
