Barrio de Belén - Iquitos is located on the banks of the Itaya River, south of Iquitos, the gateway city to the Peruvian Amazon. During the rainy season, the river rises, making the entire community appear to float on the water, which is why it is known as the "Venice of the Jungle." Thousands of residents live in stilt houses and floating homes tied to rafts, with the houses rising and falling with the water level. The high-water season typically lasts from December to May, when streets turn into waterways and canoes replace motorcycles as the primary means of transportation, with people paddling boats to visit neighbors, buy groceries, and take their children to school. When the water recedes, the stilts are exposed and wooden planks are laid over the mudflats, transforming them back into walkable boardwalk streets. The Belén Market, located right next to the riverbank, is a great window into Amazonian products: freshly caught river fish, surprisingly large freshwater fish, rare Amazonian fruits like camu camu and aguaje, and the Pasaje Paquito, which is filled with tree bark, roots, and plant infusions.Iquitos · 2.6 km from downtown

The Belém Floating Stilt House District is the floating residential area for fishermen in Iquitos. Most of the houses here are wooden houses on stilts on the water, built by the water. Most of them have no windows. They are very local in style and are definitely worth a visit.
