Giza Necropolis

9.6
4.7/5
709 reviews
The Giza Necropolis is not a single pyramid, but a collective term for a group of pyramids standing on the Giza Plateau, mostly built during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt around 2600 to 2500 BCE. The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure are aligned from northeast to southwest, interspersed with queen pyramids and funerary structures, while the Great Sphinx lies to the east. Among the seven wonders of the ancient world, this necropolis is the only one that remains today. As for the alignment of the three pyramids, some speculate it corresponds to the three stars of Orion's Belt—though merely a conjecture, it adds a layer of imagination to the stone giants amidst the yellow sands. Upon entering the attraction, the first sight that greets travelers is usually the Pyramid of Khufu, whose massive scale far surpasses the other two. The remaining height of the pyramid is approx. 140 m. Today, travelers enter the pyramid through a passage on one side of its base, ascending along a dimly lit, low corridor to reach the pharaoh's granite burial chamber. Photography is prohibited inside the pyramid, and the narrow, stuffy passage poses a significant physical challenge. Nearby, the Pyramid of Khafre appears remarkably intact from a distance due to the preserved section of ancient limestone casing at its apex. Inside, the burial chamber is long empty, with only a vacant sarcophagus lying silently within. The smallest of the three, the Pyramid of Menkaure, features a low entrance—just a few stone steps lead into a downward-sloping passage. During your visit, consider heading to the panoramic attraction on the south side of the pyramid complex to capture all three pyramids in a single frame. The long-standing camel ride experience here is also worth trying—gazing back at the pyramids from the desert offers a quintessential view of this ancient plateau.Giza · 18 km from Mit Rahinah

Ruins of Memphis

6.7
The Ruins of Memphis is the site of the capital of ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom, and it serves as a representative location for understanding the historical and cultural development of the early Nile Valley. The ruins exhibition area is moderately sized and centrally displays many ancient stone carvings and architectural fragments excavated from the site. Notable exhibits include a large reclining stone statue of Ramesses II and a Sphinx carved from alabaster. Additionally, the park preserves the foundations of ancient temples, stone column components, and sacrificial remains. As part of the cultural loop connecting Giza and the Saqqara ruins, this site offers intuitive artifact exhibitions and leisure walking paths. Visitors can quietly admire the exquisite stone carving craftsmanship, experience the weight of ancient history and the passage of time, and gain an objective window into ancient Egyptian material culture and sculptural art.Mit Rahinah · 996m from downtown

Memphis is located about 32 kilometers south of Cairo. It was the capital of ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom and one of the oldest cities in the world. But now it has become a ruin, only an open-air museum and dilapidated stone statues remain. Giant Ramses II Statue The Memphis Museum is very small, with only a lying statue of Ramses II in the museum. The statue was originally about 14 meters high and was carved from a single block of limestone, which is quite exquisite. Although 3,200 years old, the hieroglyphs on the statue are still clearly visible. In an earthquake, the statue's legs and left hand were broken, so the statue is now lying on the floor of the museum hall. If you want to see it clearly, you can go to the balcony on the second floor and make a detour. Outside the Sphinx Museum of Amenphis II is a small garden, you can see some broken stone sculptures, one of which represents the Sphinx of Amenphis II (Amenphis II) is more than 4 meters high , carved from a single 80-ton rock.Mit Rahinah · 858m from downtown

The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on the Giza Plateau, approximately two km from the pyramid complex. After over two decades of preparation and construction, it officially opened fully in November 2025. Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the museum's layout features several visual axes echoing the three pyramids. Its semi-translucent alabaster facade, adorned with triangular patterns, glows with warm desert-like tones under daylight and illuminates at night, resembling a massive stone carved from the sea of sand—earning it the nickname "the fourth pyramid of Egypt." The museum houses over 100,000 artifacts spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era. Upon entering the grand hall, travelers are greeted by the towering granite statue of Ramses II, dating back over 3,000 years. In the entrance courtyard, an obelisk is suspended mid-air, allowing passage beneath. Flanking the six-tiered central staircase are dozens of statues of pharaohs and queens, leading upward to a glass wall framing the distant pyramids—a classic photo spot. The Tutankhamun gallery is the highlight, showcasing over 5,000 burial treasures, with the golden mask displayed centrally. The restored Khufu Solar Boat also resides here. A dedicated children's museum offers an engaging introduction to ancient Egyptian civilization. Given the vast scale and dense attractions, allocate at least half a day: start with the staircase's pyramid vista, then explore the Tutankhamun gallery and solar boat exhibit. At dusk, the alabaster facade shimmers under sunset hues—a photo moment many travelers plan for.Giza · 20.2 km from Mit Rahinah

The Great Pyramid of Giza, built as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, is one of the larger and taller Egyptian pyramids. This pyramid was constructed approx. 2580 BCE. It is not only a symbol of Egypt but also the oldest structure among the seven wonders of the ancient world. Pyramids exterior To visit here, you must first enter the Giza pyramid complex. Upon entering, the first sight is this pyramid, which remains one of the best-preserved to date.Sponsored Ads, although the top has weathered over time, it remains a massive structure equivalent to a 40-story building. From a distance,Sponsored AdsEach side forms an isosceles triangle, and the entire pyramid is constructed with 2.3 million massive stone blocks. Pyramids interior Of course, besides admiring its massive exterior, travelers can also explore the interior. Although ventilation has been installed inside the pyramid, the narrow burial passages remain quite stuffy, so those in poor health are advised to proceed with caution. Sponsored AdsThe tomb entrance is at a height of 18 m above the ground, facing the Big Dipper. Photography is prohibited inside, and the passageway is illuminated by lights. After entering, stepping on the steep wooden stairs, you can imagine ancient Egyptians carrying the pharaoh's sarcophagus upward along the passageway to place it inSponsored Adsin the secret chamber. Walking step by step along the corridor inside the pyramid, your footsteps grow heavier, and the air feels increasingly stifling, until you reach the pharaoh's secret chamber. The chamber is a small room built of granite, standing 42.28 m vertically above the ground. For many years, people believed the pyramid concealed the pharaoh's treasures and mummy. But when archaeologists entered in 1881, they found only an empty sarcophagus in the central burial chamber. In the pharaoh's chamber, an open dark red granite sarcophagus can be seen placed in the center. The pharaoh's treasures were long ago looted, leaving only this empty coffin that was too heavy to move. After the exploration, walk slowly back along the original path. Emerging from the dark, enclosed passageway and returning to the open, bright desert landscape, the stark contrast in light and space creates a wondrous feeling of having lived through another lifetime, allowing you to truly grasp the awe and vicissitudes of this thousand-year-old stone miracle.Giza · 18 km from Mit Rahinah

Hanging Church

Hanging Church is a prominent Coptic Orthodox church in Coptic Cairo. It is believed to have been founded in the 3rd century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church is built on the site of the south gate of the ancient Roman Babylon Fortress, with its nave suspended above the fortress passageway, hence the name "Hanging." Ascending the steps from the street, passing through the pointed stone arch and iron gate, you will see the 19th-century twin-tower facade, with courtyard walls adorned with biblical motifs. The interior of the church has a rectangular basilica layout, with a wooden vaulted roof shaped like Noah's Ark. The sanctuary is divided into three parts, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, and Saint George, respectively. The wooden iconostasis in front of the altar is inlaid with ebony and ivory, decorated with geometric patterns and cross motifs, and topped with a series of icons depicting Jesus, the Virgin Mary, angels, and the apostles. The marble pulpit is supported by several slender columns, which symbolize Jesus and the twelve apostles; one black basalt column represents Judas, who betrayed Jesus, a design feature that is quite unique among Coptic churches. The sanctuary features a glass floor, through which you can look down at the ruins of the Roman fortress beneath your feet, intuitively experiencing the unique nature of the church's suspended construction. Starting from the 11th century, the church served as the long-term residence of the Coptic Pope, holding an important place in the history of the Coptic Church.Cairo · 17.5 km from Mit Rahinah

The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, and houses the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities in the world. The museum displays an extensive collection spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era. The architect of the building was selected through an international competition in 1895, which was the first of its kind, and was won by the French architect, Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, and home to some of the world's most magnificent ancient masterpieces. Among the museum's unrivaled collection are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I and the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette commemorating the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king, which is also among the museum's invaluable artifacts. The museum also houses the splendid statues of the great kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the builders of the pyramids at the Giza plateau. An extensive collection of papyri, sarcophagi and jewelry, among other objects, completes this uniquely expansive museum.Cairo · 22.2 km from Mit Rahinah

The Step Pyramid, also called the Djoser Pyramid, belongs to the Saqqara Pyramid Group. After that, the pharaohs built mausoleums for themselves according to its shape and construction method. There are very exquisite ancient Egyptian murals in the general tomb next to the pyramid, which can be visited. The prototype of the Egyptian pyramids This pyramid is the more famous and well-preserved one of the Saqqara pyramids. It was built in the 27th century BC and was the tomb of the third dynasty Djoser Pharaoh of ancient Egypt. Although it is not an organized triangle, it has begun to take shape. It has an obvious six-story ladder structure in appearance and is about 62 meters high. At first, the pyramid was just an ordinary stone tomb. Later, it was built on top of it layer by layer to form the current appearance, but it was very vicissitudes of life after wind erosion.Al Badrashin · 3.7 km from Mit Rahinah

Coptic Cairo is situated on the ruins of the Babylon Fortress, built during the Roman period, and serves as the historical heart of Coptic Christianity in Egypt. Although the area is compact, it is densely packed with several ancient churches, a synagogue, and Coptic Museum, all of which can be easily visited on foot. The Hanging Church within the area is built above the gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress's south gate, with its nave suspended over the passageway, hence its name. The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga) is said to be built over the cave where the Holy Family took refuge when they fled to Egypt; visitors can descend into the crypt, which is an important site for Christian pilgrimage. The Church of St. Barbara is renowned for its ancient icons and the relics of Saint Barbara. In addition to the cluster of churches, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is also located here. It is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Cairo and, together with the surrounding churches, bears witness to the unique history of religious coexistence in this area. Coptic Museum houses a vast collection of early Christian art treasures, including textiles, icons, manuscripts, and stone carvings, making it an essential place for understanding Coptic art. The area's deep, stone-paved alleyways are dotted with old book stalls and small souvenir shops, and strolling through them offers an atmosphere quite distinct from other parts of Cairo.Cairo · 17.5 km from Mit Rahinah

In Cairo, mosques and minarets are ubiquitous buildings. In Arabic, minarets are called "minars," which refer to the place where the muezzin stands to call people to prayer. Since the 7th century, with the widespread spread of Islam in West Asia and North Africa, the art of mosque architecture has continued to develop, and minarets have evolved into various styles, becoming an indispensable part of mosque architecture and a highlight of Cairo.
