Putuo Mountain is the sacred site of Guanyin Bodhisattva, renowned as the "Putuo Mountain Scenic Area." Visitors and pilgrims never miss the three grand temples—Puji, Fayu, and Huiji—along with the 33m-tall Nanhai Guanyin statue. The mountain's charming coastal scenery adds to its allure, offering delightful experiences like strolling along Qianbu Sands and admiring the reclining Buddha view over the sea. Putuo Mountain Island is located east of Zhoushan Island, with no road access—only ferry service to Putuo Mountain Pier is available. The elongated island spans approx. 7 km in length, with attractions spaced 2–10 km apart. Nearby attractions can be explored on foot, while distant ones are accessible via the island's itinerary buses departing from the pier's passenger terminal. Additionally, Foding Mountain offers cable car rides, and Luojia Mountain—a small island approx. 5 km east of Putuo Mountain—is reachable by boat (accessible exclusively from Putuo Mountain Island as part of the Putuo Mountain Scenic Area). The attractions in Putuo Mountain Scenic Area are mainly distributed across three zones. Visitors can explore all attractions within each zone together, with each zone requiring approximately half a day to visit. Travelers can plan their itinerary based on their accommodation location and arrival time on the island. Zone 1: Centered around Puji Temple, the western side of the island features attractions like the West Heaven Scenic Area. As the island's main temple dedicated to Guanyin, Puji Temple stands alongside the Duobao Pagoda, one of Putuo Mountain's three treasures. The West Heaven Scenic Area boasts numerous attractions including Pantuo Rock, Heart Character Rock, and Meifu Temple. Zone 2: In the southern area, you'll find attractions like the Nanhai Guanyin statue, Zizhu Forest, Bukenqu Guanyin Temple, and Nantian Gate. The Nanhai Guanyin statue is the island's landmark structure, while Bukenqu Guanyin Temple holds legendary tales of Putuo Mountain that you won't want to miss. Zone 3: Centered around Foding Mountain, the area features two temples: Fayu Temple and Huiji Zen Temple. The other two treasures of Mount Putuo - the Nine Dragons Caisson Ceiling and the Yangzhi Guanyin Stele - are located in Fayu Temple and Yangzhi Zen Temple adjacent to it respectively. If time permits, you can also take a boat to Luojia Mountain, which typically requires about half a day. In addition to these religious attractions, there are two bathing beaches on the eastern side of the island: Thousand-Step Sand near Fayu Temple and Hundred-Step Sand near Purple Bamboo Grove. Visitors who enjoy ocean views and water activities are welcome to visit.

Mount Putuo Scenic Area-Purple Bamboo Grove is located at the southeastern end of Putuo Mountain Scenic Area, facing Mount Luojia across the sea. What people often refer to as "Purple Bamboo Forest" is not a patch of purple bamboo, but rather a collection of attractions includingPurple Bamboo Forest, Bukenqu Guanyin Yard, and Chaoyin Cave. This area was an early site of Guanyin worship onPutuo Mountain, and many visitors come here drawn by the legend of "Bukenqu Guanyin." Entering the scenic area from the parking lot, go straight at the intersection to reach Nanhai Guanyin and Guanyintiao Scenic Spot, or turn left and walk to the end to findPurple Bamboo Forest. The gate ofPurple Bamboo Forestis combined withHeavenly King Hallin a unique architectural design. Above the central door ofHeavenly King Hallrises a gate tower that serves as the entrance archway, with the inscription "Bu Tan Purple Bamboo Forest" written by Kang Youwei. The temple is modest in size, with the main building beingYuantong Hall, which houses a seated statue of Guanyin with purple bamboo, where visitors can offer prayers. Additionally, the temple features many calligraphic plaques and couplets by famous artists, rich in Zen spirit, worth a careful look. ExitingPurple Bamboo Forest, follow the path opposite toward the sea to reach Bukenqu Guanyin Yard and Chaoyin Cave. Along the way, you can seeSea-Viewing Pavilionin front of Bukenqu Guanyin Yard from a distance. The temple is small; the original ancient nunnery has long disappeared, and the current buildings are newly constructed. However, this is one of the earliest temple sites onPutuo Mountain, marking the beginning of Buddha worship, making it a must-visit spot in Putuo Mountain Scenic Area. Opposite Bukenqu Guanyin Yard is Chaoyin Cave, half-submerged in the sea, where the tides surge in and out day and night with a thunderous roar. Enjoying the sea view here, you can see Mount Luojia in the distance, resembling a giant Buddha lying on the sea—a beautiful sight. Legend has it that this was a place where Guanyin manifested, so devout believers often interpret the sound of the tides as the Buddha's teachings, adding a mystical aura to Chaoyin Cave. Nearby stands a stele inscribed with "Prohibition of Self-Sacrifice and Finger Burning," a reminder that in the past, many devotees would jump into the cave to sacrifice themselves or burn their fingers in front of Bukenqu Guanyin Yard, believing this would lead to enlightenment. The local governor erected this stele to stop such practices. Today, no one engages in such acts, and this history has become a favorite story for tour guides, while the stele serves as a photo spot for visitors. After touring Mount Putuo Scenic Area-Purple Bamboo Grove, you can walk further south to pay homage to the 33-meter-tall Nanhai Guanyin. Additionally, the area is close to the pier; walking back to the pier, you can also visitSouth Heaven Gateand other nearby attractions along the way.

Bukenqu Guanyin Yard is located within the Purple Bamboo Forest. It is one of the earliest temple sites on Putuo Mountain, and combined with the legend of "Bukenqu Guanyin" (Guanyin who refused to leave), it has become a famous temple outside the "Three Major Temples of Putuo." Pilgrims come to worship in an endless stream every day, and because the temple is built by the sea, it is also an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts. Walking from the Purple Bamboo Forest Temple toward the sea, you will soon reach Bukenqu Guanyin Yard. This temple is small in size, but it is recognized as the origin of Putuo Mountain's "Buddhist Kingdom of Sea and Sky." Almost every pilgrim or visitor who comes here can tell a few lines of the "Bukenqu Guanyin" legend. It is said that when the Japanese monk Huie was bringing a statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva back to his country from Wutai Mountain, the sea suddenly became rough as the ship passed through the Lotus Ocean of the Zhoushan Archipelago. The monk believed that the Bodhisattva did not wish to go east, so he went ashore and left the statue behind. Later, a farmer on the island vacated his own house to enshrine the Guanyin who refused to leave. This led to the first "Bukenqu Guanyin Yard" on the island, as well as the various large and small Buddhist temples on Putuo Mountain. The original temple building is long gone, and the temple seen today was rebuilt in the 1980s. Perhaps because of this legend, unlike traditional Chinese Buddhist temples with yellow walls, it looks more like a Japanese building. Although there are not many ancient relics left in the temple, the legendary stories about this place are widely known, so it is very popular with pilgrims every day. In addition to the Tang-style Eleven-Faced Guanyin statue enshrined in the main hall, there is a "33 Guanyin Sacred Sites" corridor on the west side of the temple, which houses 33 Guanyin statues that the devout can worship one by one. The Sea-Viewing Pavilion opposite Bukenqu Guanyin Yard is a great place to view the sea, and you can take a short break here when there are not many tourists. The nearby Chaoyin Cave, tucked away in a corner, is also suitable for enjoying the sea view and listening to the bustling sound of the tides. Many tourists also take photos in front of the "Prohibition of Self-Sacrifice and Finger Burning" stele.

Overall, it was alright. Conditions at Putuoshan are limited, but the rooms were great because they didn't have a damp smell, the air conditioning was powerful, and the butler, Xiao Shao, was very nice and attentive, especially friendly to our dog. However, the restaurant service was poor. Even with a stroller and our dog, when we asked to eat outdoors or in a separate area with our dog, the staff were unfriendly and rude. It was unexpected that a pet-friendly hotel in a Buddhist area would be so unfriendly to dogs, with such poor service and noisy, unfriendly staff, which upset my parents. Fortunately, the Radisson restaurant next door was excellent, and the food was very good. The positive review is for the butler service, the evening sutra-copying experience, and the well-maintained facilities over the years. Of course, the facilities can't compare to newer hotels, but the fact that it hasn't been damp for so many years is really commendable. The breakfast noodles, pickled vegetables, golden cake, and pancakes were delicious.

Stepping into the Purple Bamboo Forest of Putuo Mountain feels like stepping into a tranquil Buddhist wonderland. Amidst the lush bamboo forest, sunlight filters through the leaves, creating dappled shadows. A gentle sea breeze caresses the swaying bamboo shadows, and the air is filled with the faint scent of incense. The solemn and ancient Guanyin Temple, recounting millennia-old legends, offers an unprecedented spiritual tranquility and cleansing, allowing one to forget worldly worries and experience the solemnity of Buddhism and the beauty of nature. It's a truly worthwhile journey.

Fayu Temple offers free incense and is very close to Qianbu Beach. You can take a shuttle bus from the pier to Fayu Temple first, then walk to Qianbu Beach to watch the sunset! Baibu Beach is a bit of a distance away, but it's a filming location for Journey to the West!

Huiji Temple is located on the top of Foding Mountain in Putuo Mountain. You need to take a minibus to the cable car to get there. I heard that you can also climb the mountain to get to Fayu Temple, but it will be very tiring. Huiji Temple has a great view. Now the exit and entrance are separated. There is a place where you can look across to Zhoushan on the opposite side, and the sea view is open.

Qianbusha Beach in Putuo Mountain is truly a paradise on earth. It is the largest beach in Putuo Mountain, about 1,750 meters long. The sand is as fine as gold, soft and pure. Walking on it feels like walking on brocade. The wide and gentle sand surface makes people open-minded. The waves are moored on the shore day and night, and the sound of waves is endless, magnificent and poetic. You can watch the sunrise in the morning and the sunset in the evening. Whether walking, sitting or meditating, it is extremely pleasant. It is a great place for people to forget their troubles and get close to nature.

In the middle of Shancai Ancient Cave is a stone statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. Shancai Ancient Cave is called a cave, but it is not actually a cave, but a stone crevice 1.5 meters wide and 4 meters deep. Its shape resembles a dragon head, the cave mouth is a dragon mouth, a rock protrudes like a dragon tongue, two stones on the top of the cave stand like dragon horns, and the apricot yellow wall winds and rises like a dragon body, together it looks like a coiled dragon lying in the valley.

Bukenqu Guanyin Temple is located in Zizhulin, Putuoshan Island, Putuo District, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. Zizhulin is the place where Guanyin practiced Taoism, and Bukenqu Guanyin Temple is the earliest place to build a temple on the mountain. Next to Chaoyin Cave, there is a yellow low wall surrounding three simple Buddhist halls, which are filled with incense all year round.
