Quivertree Forest and Giant's PlaygroundLocated on the outskirts of the small town of Keetmanshoop in southern Namibia, these are two nearby natural landscapes with distinct styles. On one side are the strangely shaped, vigorous quiver trees, and on the other are rock formations shaped by hundreds of millions of years of geological evolution. The plants and rocks complement each other on the vast, desolate land, together defining Namibia's unique and mysterious desert scenery. They have thick trunks and smooth bark, with dense branches spreading out at the top. From a distance, they look like fantastical plants growing in the desert. At sunset, the setting sun casts a golden-copper glow on the trunks, and the scattered shadows of the trees against the vast desert create a scene with great depth. If you look closely at the surrounding rocks, you might spot round rock hyraxes scurrying between the crevices, bringing a touch of life to this quiet forest. The giant rocks here are made of diabase, formed by cooling underground magma over 100 million years ago. The Fish River Canyon is beautiful especially during sunset. Unfortunately the hiking trail down the canyon was closed when we visited, but definitely worth doing the hike if it’s open. There’s a few viewing points for the Fish River Canyon and certain spots requires a 4x4 to navigate through.
