St. Stephen's Cathedral

8.2
4.7/5
603 reviews
"St. Stephen's Cathedral is located in Stephansplatz in the center of Vienna's old town. It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Vienna and one of the city's symbols. The church was first built in the 12th century as a Romanesque parish church. In the 14th century, under the leadership of Duke Rudolf IV, it underwent large-scale expansion and gradually took on the form of a Gothic cathedral. From the late 15th century, it became the cathedral of the Bishop of Vienna. A fire at the end of World War II destroyed the roof, which was later rebuilt after the war. Over the centuries, many weddings and funerals of the Habsburg dynasty were held here. Mozart was married in this church, and his funeral also took place here. Particularly striking is the church's colorful roof: hundreds of thousands of glazed tiles form diamond patterns, with the Habsburg double-headed eagle emblem embedded on the southern slope and the coats of arms of Vienna and Austria on the northern slope, shimmering brilliantly under the sunlight. The roof has an extremely steep pitch, allowing rainwater to wash it clean and preventing snow from accumulating. The Gothic main tower on the south side stands over 130 m tall and is affectionately called "Steffl" (Little Steffl) by the locals. It once housed the watchmen's quarters, where they kept watch for fires across the city and sounded the alarm bells. The north tower, halted due to construction difficulties, reaches only half the height of the main tower. Upon entering the church interior, the baroque high altar at the far end depicts the martyrdom of the patron saint Stephen; the Wiener Neustadt altar on the north side is a gothic double-winged altar, revealing gilded wood carvings of the Virgin Mary's life when opened on Sundays, with Emperor Frederick III's "A.E.I.O.U." motto still visible on its base. The stone pulpit in the central courtyard features reliefs of the four doctors of the church, adorned with carvings of a toad and lizard biting each other on its handrail, while a self-portrait of the sculptor peeking from a window hides beneath the pulpit steps; the crucifix playfully nicknamed "Jesus with a toothache" by Viennese locals is also worth pausing to admire. The catacombs house remains of over ten thousand individuals, including victims relocated after plagues and the sarcophagi/copper urns of dozens of Habsburg family members; beside the apostle choir stalls, Frederick III's red marble sarcophagus carved with over two hundred figures is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval stone sculpture. If your physical condition allows, you can climb the observation deck via the over 300 spiral stone steps of the south tower to overlook the continuous red-tiled roofs of Vienna's old town. The north tower has an elevator, allowing you to admire the approx. 20-ton "Pummerin" bell up close—one of the few giant bells in Austria and among the top-ranking surviving large bells in Europe. It only rings during important festivals like Christmas and New Year, with its deep chimes resonating throughout the entire old town on New Year's Eve.Vienna · 78.2 km from Pasohlavky

Fisherman's Bastion

4.7/5
656 reviews
The Fisherman's Bastion is located on the Castle Hill on the Buda side. It is a fortress named in memory of the fishermen who defended the Danube in the past. It is known as the three most shocking buildings in Hungary together with the Hungarian Parliament Building and the National Opera House. It also overlooks the Danube and overlooks the Lookout point for views of the Perth district. Historical background The Fisherman's Bastion stands on the Danube River, adjacent to the Matthias Church. It was built in 1895 and took six years to complete. This double-storey gray-white building is centered on the white minaret of the neo-Roman style. Together with several surrounding round towers, it represents the ancestral tribes of Hungary. The towers are connected by cloisters, like a labyrinth, which looks like a Disney Logo from a distance. in the castle. Several bronze statues on the Fisherman's Bastion are also quite eye-catching. One of the more famous is a horse-riding bronze statue of a Hungarian king. It was built in 1906 and is located between Matthias Church and Fisherman's Castle. The relief on the pedestal shows The king's life story. The guided tour of the Fisherman's Bastion has many steps and walking paths, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way as you climb the steps. Fisherman's Bastion has many high tower viewing platforms. It doesn't matter if it encounters windy, rainy weather, etc. The arched cloister of the viewing platform is a good shelter from the rain and summer. Take a break on the bench. Overlooking the scenery Standing on the Fisherman's Bastion, you can see the magnificent views that you can't even see from the top of the castle: the Danube, Margaret Island, the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Freedom Hill are all in sight. The Fisherman's Bastion at night is also full of unique charm, and everything around is particularly charming under the illumination of special lights. The performance of street performers on the platform adds to the mood. It is also very romantic to come here to watch the night view. You can see many couples dating here. It is said that most of the first kisses of local young people happened here. The restaurant with the same name of the Fisherman's Bastion has seats in the north and south corridors of the Fisherman's Bastion. The dining environment is very good. The restaurant has a terrace on the high tower. Drinking coffee there and looking at the beautiful surrounding scenery is a pleasure. enjoy.Hungary · Budapest

Votive Church

7.6
4.5/5
56 reviews
The Votive Church is located next to Vienna's Ringstrasse, facing the main building of the University of Vienna across the street. It is a neo-Gothic Catholic church, often referred to as the Church of Thanksgiving due to its origin as a votive offering. In 1853, Emperor Franz Joseph I survived an assassination attempt when the blade was deflected by his stiff collar during a walk near the old city walls. His brother, Archduke Maximilian, subsequently initiated a fundraising campaign across the empire to build this church in gratitude for the emperor's narrow escape. Construction took over twenty years, and the church was finally completed in 1879 for the silver wedding anniversary of the emperor and Empress Elisabeth. The facade follows a typical Gothic layout: two nearly 100 m high openwork spires stand symmetrically on either side, with a gallery of saints above the three pointed-arch doorways, while rose windows and flying buttresses outline its soaring silhouette. Due to its white stone construction and colorful patterned roof tiles, travelers often mistake it for St. Stephen's Cathedral, though the two buildings are separated by over seven centuries. Inside, notable features include the gilded canopy above the high altar, the hexagonal marble pulpit—bearing a relief portrait of architect Heinrich von Ferstel at its base—and the Renaissance-style sarcophagus of Count Niklas Salm, who defended Vienna during the 1529 Ottoman siege. The open green space in front of the church offers expansive views and is an ideal spot for photographing the twin spires, whose silhouettes stand out distinctly at dusk. This location can be combined with visits to other Ringstrasse landmarks like the University of Vienna main building and City Hall.Vienna · 77.7 km from Pasohlavky

Charles Bridge

1k reviews
The Charles Bridge connects the old town and the small town of Prague. It is a landmark building in Prague, and it is also the oldest stone bridge in the city. It is often said that "you have come to Prague by crossing this bridge". Inscribed on the World Heritage List This is a Gothic stone bridge imitating the Roman Angel Bridge, and it is the only way for the coronation procession of the kings of the past dynasties. In 1992, the Charles Bridge was included in the World Heritage List. When it was first built, its name was "Stone Bridge". It is said that egg yolks are also mixed into the raw mortar for reinforcement. The open-air Baroque Statue Museum Charles Bridge is 516 meters long and has a particularly wide deck. The bridge is known as "Europe's open-air Baroque sculpture gallery". There are various sculptures and reliefs decorated on both sides of the bridge. There are a total of 30 saint sculptures, all of which are masterpieces from Czech masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is said that behind each statue there is a touching historical story. Statue of St. John Among the many statues on the Charles Bridge, the statue of St. John is the more famous one and is considered to be the "official" guardian of the Charles Bridge. St. John, a cardinal, offended the king because of the political and religious struggle, and was sentenced to death and thrown into the river. A golden cross is engraved in the middle of the fence, where St. John was thrown from the bridge. Touch the statue and pray for happiness It is said that as long as you touch the statue of Charles Bridge with your heart, you will get a lifetime of happiness. Many bronze reliefs become very bright because too many people touch them. Most of the sculptures on the bridge have now been replaced by replicas, while the originals are kept in Prague's museums. Street artists on the bridge In addition to various statues, the street artists on the bridge are also a unique landscape. There are art painting booths on both sides of the bridge, and many street painters paint on the spot, and most of the themes are taken from the Charles Bridge. In addition, there are some artistic workers who perform with musical instruments, bringing infinite vitality to the Charles Bridge. The bridge tower overlooks the beauty of Prague There are two bridge towers at both ends of the Charles Bridge - the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Small Town Bridge Tower. You can climb the bridge tower and overlook the Charles Bridge and the city of Prague, which is even more beautiful when the sun sets in the evening.Czech Republic · Prague

Old Town Square

No "wishing pool" yet still stunning "I stood in the Old Town Square at dusk in Prague, casting hope into the wishing well..." You must have heard Jolin Tsai's "Prague Square," a song depicting the Old Town Square surrounded by medieval architecture. However, the reality is there is no "wishing well" mentioned in the lyrics, but the fairy-tale atmosphere here is enchanting enough. The Old Town Square was built approx. 900 years ago and is a historically renowned square in Prague, located between Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge. It is also the heart of the city, bustling with crowds every summer. Public square highlights At the center of the square stands a statue of Jan Hus built in 1915, erected to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Charles University rector. The surrounding buildings showcase diverse architectural styles, ranging from Gothic masterpieces like the Church of Our Lady before Týn to Baroque gems such as St. Nicholas Church. A major attraction for visitors is the Prague astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall facade. On the hour, the clock chimes as windows above it open, revealing a procession of 12 apostle figures that bow to the crowd. If interested, you can also climb the tower of the old town hall to overlook the panoramic view of the old town. The roofs in the city are almost all painted red, while the slightly protruding spires of clock towers and churches are green. They are scattered yet orderly throughout the city, and the vivid colors give Prague a fairy-tale charm. Public square activity The old town square is not only a popular tourist destination but also frequently used for new year celebrations, holiday markets (Christmas and Easter) and rally activities. On ordinary days, there are many street performers in the square, and many local youth come here to take wedding photos. The square is surrounded by many cafes. If you're tired from exploring, you can order a coffee at an outdoor cafe, and don't miss the grilled sausages and ice cream. Enjoying the music and dance performances on the square is truly refreshing. The alleys around the square are lined with small shops selling various art goods—if you like them, you can buy some as souvenirs.Czech Republic · Prague

City Park is adjacent to Heroes' Square and is an important public green space in the center of Budapest, as well as one of the earliest established city parks, with a history dating back to the early 19th century. During the Middle Ages, this area was the hunting ground of King Matthias and was later used as a meeting place for the parliament. The park centers around an artificial lake, which offers boating in the summer and transforms into an open-air ice rink in the winter, with different scenery throughout the seasons. Standing on the island in the lake is Vajdahunyad Castle, built for the 1896 Hungarian Millennium Celebration, which blends various architectural styles including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The park also brings together facilities such as the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, and theCapital Circus of Budapest, covering a variety of activities including thermal bath experiences, family-friendly tours, and cultural performances.Hungary · Budapest

Buda Castle

Buda Castle stands majestically atop Castle Hill as one of the landmarks of Budapest. It once served as the residence of the Hungarian royal family. Today, the central part of the palace has been converted into the Budapest History Museum, the National Library, and the National Gallery. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. History The castle was first built in the 13th century under the direction of King Béla IV after the Mongol invasion. It subsequently endured destruction during the Ottoman occupation, multiple wars, and post-renovation devastation in World War II, making its history truly tumultuous. The palace we see today is its restored form after the war. Architectural styleThe architectural style combines Baroque and Gothic elements in a hybrid palace, grand in scale, with its main facade supported by Greek Corinthian columns. The exterior walls feature alternating red and white hues, while the Baroque-style green dome atop the facade is particularly striking. Visitor guide Passing through the lion gate into the courtyard, you can see the Matthias fountain, which depicts a hunting scene of King Matthias leading his entourage, with vivid postures of both the figures and the hounds. On the terrace overlooking the Danube stands the bronze statue of the mythical Turul bird, said to have guided the ancestors of the Magyars to this land, its talons clutching the "Sword of Attila." On one side of the terrace stands the equestrian statue of Prince Eugene, facing the Danube. At the entrance of the Budapest history museum, the bronze statues "War and peace" flanking the doorway symbolize war and peace through angelic figures, also worthy of close observation. The interior is also worth spending time on: the Hungarian National Gallery is renowned for its Gothic altarpieces, wood carvings, and other medieval artworks; the Budapest History Museum tells the story of the city and preserves restored medieval palace halls and chapels; the Széchényi National Library houses rare ancient books, including the former royal collection of King Matthias. After the visit, take a stroll on the Danube-facing viewing terrace, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and the scenery along both banks of the Danube—especially enchanting at dusk when the lights come on. To ascend the hill, you can either walk up through the old town of Castle Hill or take the cable car from the end of the Chain Bridge for a leisurely ride up.Hungary · Budapest

Mirabell Palace & Garden

289 reviews
Mirabell Palace & Garden is located on the north bank of the Salzach River in Salzburg. Built in 1606 by Archbishop Dietrich for his lover Salome and their children, the palace was later renamed "Mirabell" by his successor. Today, it serves as the office of Salzburg's municipal authorities. The iconic scene from the movie The Sound of Music, where Maria and the children sing "Do-Re-Mi," was filmed by the garden's steps and fountain. The palace suffered a fire in 1818, with the marble staircase leading to the garden and the marble hall being among the surviving parts. The staircase is adorned with cherubs sculpted by Baroque artist Donner, each holding clouds in playful and endearing poses. The marble hall once echoed with the piano melodies of the young Mozart and is now a popular wedding venue, also frequently used for concerts and other events. The garden features a typical Baroque layout: statues of Greek and Roman mythological figures flank the entrance, while the central Pegasus fountain is surrounded by sculptures symbolizing the four elements. The green hedge theater at the rear, enclosed by neatly trimmed hedges, dates back to the early 18th century. The dwarf garden boasts a group of whimsically exaggerated stone gnomes, said to be modeled after real court figures. Unicorn sculptures scattered throughout add a fairy-tale charm to the solemn Baroque scenery. Climb the steps to the rose hill for a view of Salzburg Fortress on the opposite riverbank. The garden is adorned mainly with flower beds, hedges, and roses, making it especially delightful to visit during warmer seasons.Austria · Salzburg

Lake Hallstatt

Lake Hallstatt is located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria and is an Alpine lake carved by glaciers. It has a long, narrow surface and towering cliffs on both banks, resembling a fjord. The lake reaches a depth of 125m and has clear water; it is named after the town of Hallstatt on its shore. When the water is calm, the surface reflects the peaks of the Dachstein Mountains like a mirror. It is often shrouded in mist in the early morning, and the mountain forests are colorful in the fall. A traditional wooden flat-bottomed boat called a "Fuhr" is still preserved on the lake. It has been used to transport salt and goods on the lake since the 13th century, and this boating skill has now been included in the list of intangible cultural heritage. Every year on Corpus Christi, local residents hold a traditional procession on the lake. People decorate the flat-bottomed boats with flowers and set up altars on them. The bishop, choir, and people dressed in traditional costumes travel by boat on the lake to perform rituals, a unique folk custom that has continued for hundreds of years. In addition, the clear water of the lake also attracts diving enthusiasts. Sunken ancient trees and the wreckage of old salt transport ships are preserved underwater, and there is even an underwater altar. Tourists can take sightseeing cruises around the lake, and looking back at the town of Hallstatt from the lake is a classic postcard view. There are walking trails and bicycle paths on the east bank, suitable for hiking or cycling to enjoy the lake and mountain scenery.Austria · Hallstatt

Charles Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in Prague and a wonderful place to visit. The historic stone bridge is full of beautiful statues and offers amazing views of the Vltava River, Prague Castle, and the city’s old buildings. I enjoyed walking across the bridge, watching local artists, musicians, and street performers, which created a lively atmosphere. The bridge is especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset when the light makes the scenery even more impressive. It is also a great place to take photos and enjoy the city’s history. Overall, Charles Bridge is a must-visit attraction that combines history, culture, and beautiful views, making it one of the highlights of any trip to Prague.

Prague's Old Town Square doesn't have a wishing well, but when the Astronomical Clock strikes the hour, the twelve apostles' figures emerge from the windows, always drawing a large crowd. The spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn are a dark gray, like two flames. Pigeons perch on the Jan Hus statue in the center of the square year-round. Turning into the alleyways, you can buy cinnamon rolls, piping hot and sprinkled with powdered sugar. In the evening, as the lights come on, the sound of horse-drawn carriages crunching on the cobblestones is crisp and clear; sitting in an open-air seat watching people come and go is quite relaxing.

Buda Castle in Budapest, Hungary, is a majestic historical complex that crowns Castle Hill overlooking the Danube River. Once the royal palace of Hungarian kings, it now houses the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery, and the Széchenyi Library. The castle’s grand architecture, cobblestone courtyards, and panoramic views of the city and Chain Bridge make it a must-visit attraction. At night, the illuminated castle creates a breathtaking scene across the river. Visitors can explore its rich history, art collections, and nearby attractions like Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. Buda Castle perfectly embodies Hungary’s royal and cultural heritage.

Go there for the beautiful garden outside with all the amazing sculptures. Need to know, a scene from the do-re-me song from the movie The sound of music was shot there. You also get an amazing view of Fortress Hohensalzburg. It says it's free to visit the palace but there's really only one staircase and a small room you can see and it's not marked out. I think it's mainly used for concerts. It's still worth a look especially the staircase with all the sculptures.
