Enshi Grand Canyon National 5A Scenic Area and National Geopark is a world-renowned "natural museum" of composite karst landforms with "ground fissures, cenotes and rock pillars" coexisting at the same time. Its ecological environment is unique, and its natural scenery is primitive and simple, with a gallery of ten thousand meters of cliffs, a thousand-foot waterfall, hundreds of unique peaks, and ten miles of deep ravines. Yunlong Ground Fissure is called "the beautiful scar of the earth"; "One Incense Stick" was rated as one of the 40 famous scenic spots in China by foreign media. Yunlong ground seam Yunlong Ground Fissure Scenic Area covers an area of 11.3 square kilometers and has an altitude of 600-800 meters. The main landforms in the scenic area include ground fissures, waterfalls, deep pools, karst caves, underground rivers, pictographic stones, and geological profiles. Yunlong Ground Fissure is zigzag-shaped in plane, extending nearly north-south, with a total length of 3.6 kilometers, an average depth of 75 meters, and an average width of 15 meters. The river valley is deep and the bank is steep. It is known as the "ten-mile and hundred-foot cliff". It is the main sightseeing area of Yunlong Ground Fissure Scenic Area. The two walls of Yunlong Ground Fissure are steep and nearly parallel, and the width is basically the same from top to bottom. The cross section is "U"-shaped, which is extremely rare and unique. A stick of incense Karst stone pillars. A stick of incense is a landmark of the Enshi Grand Canyon and a very rare landscape among similar karst landforms. A stick of incense is 150 meters high, with a diameter of 6 meters at the bottom and a minimum diameter of only 4 meters. Its rock type is Triassic limestone. Because the strata here are horizontal, and the rock has a high compressive strength (800 kg/cm3), and there is no tilt or slip, it cannot be moved by the wind or knocked down by the rain. It has stood proudly among the peaks for tens of millions of years, guarding this mysterious land, which is rare. Cliff plank road The Cliff Plank Road, also known as Buyuntian Plank Road and Cliff Corridor, was built in August 2006 and took 1 year and 8 months to complete. The plank road is located on the mountainside of the vertical cliff on the east side of the mountain, with an altitude of about 1,700 meters, a total length of 488 meters, a height difference of 300 meters, and 118 stone steps. It is integrated with the mountain cliffs. Because the plank road is built on the cliff, some people call it the Cliff Corridor, or the "Cliff Plank Road". The project is a combination of the manufacturing technology of the ancient Bashu plank road with modern reinforced concrete building materials and advanced construction technology. It is scientific, safe, and magnificent. Welcome Song The Welcoming Pine, which is estimated to be nearly a thousand years old, grows proudly on the cliff, as if opening its arms to welcome tourists from all over the world.

The 816 Project Scenic Spot is located in Baitao Street, Fuling District, Chongqing City. It is a nuclear raw material production base independently designed and constructed by the People's Republic of China and deployed in a cave. It has the top-secret code name "816". The construction was approved by the Central Military Commission in 1966. Its full name is the "Third-line Construction Atomic Energy Reactor and Chemical Reprocessing Project." It is a typical representative of more than 1,100 projects in the "Third Line Construction" of New China. That year, more than 60,000 construction troops from across the country were mobilized to Baitao to start the 18-year project construction. The project has gone through three stages: emergency construction, delayed construction, and construction suspension. The total excavation area is 104,000 square meters. The tunnel consists of 18 large holes and more than 130 pilot tunnels, branch tunnels, tunnels and shafts. The main cavern is as high as 79 . 6 meters. By 1984, 85% of the construction work had been completed, and about 60% of the installation work had been completed. The total investment reached 746 million yuan (price in that year). Due to the complexity and arduousness of the engineering design and construction, it is known as the "Three Gorges in the Cave, the Underground Great Wall" and the "Heshi Bi buried deep in the mountains". It also has the characteristics of the "Three Gods" of magic, mystery and sacredness. 102 component storage pool The location where CCTV's “Going to the Grassroots” special report “Remember” column covers an area of 1,326 square meters. Its main function is to accept components and non-working blocks removed from the reactor, as well as store and classify non-working blocks. The 102 factory building is divided into two parts: the operation room and the pool. Each pool is equipped with water gates (9 sets in total) for the pool to be filled and drained in turn. There are 400 bucket positions with poles in the entire pool for long-term storage of original parts and non-working blocks. After the components are stored for one year, they will be cleaned by special water. Send it down the corridor to Factory 818. Ring Road 8 Located in the post-processing area of the entire project. It is huge in size, majestic in surroundings, and the beautiful lights perfectly outline the majesty of the cave. You might as well come here to explore the mystery and magic of the original ecological cave. Reactor pot bottom Located on the third floor of the main reactor. There are many pipe corridors above the bottom of the pot, which is spectacular. The construction of the glass corridor allows visitors to have a better experience, walk quietly under the pot, and overlook the long nuclear light. central control room Located on the ninth floor of the reactor. The most advanced computer body in the country at that time was housed here, which was the "heart" of the entire military industry cave and the central hub for coordinating the entire nuclear fuel manufacturing process. The 104 Nuclear Power Plant is 31.2 meters high and 25 meters wide. The reactor is a dual-purpose reactor for production and power generation. It uses its nuclear waste heat to generate electricity in accordance with the principle of "focusing on nuclear production and supplementing power generation, producing first and then generating electricity".

Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street

Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street is the long-established core commercial district in Chongqing, located on the Yuzhong Peninsula. Centered around the Monument to the People's Liberation at its heart, it extends along several streets including Minquan Road, Minzu Road, Zourong Road, and Bayi Road. The monument is an octagonal tower-shaped structure, originally built to commemorate the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and later renamed the Monument to the People's Liberation. Its four-sided clock at the top makes it a highly recognizable landmark in Chongqing, and most travelers visiting here take photos in front of it. Shopping and food are the two main themes of the pedestrian street: the area around the monument is densely packed with shopping malls and traditional department stores. When tired from shopping, visitors can turn into Bayi Road Snack Street, where sour and spicy noodles, small glutinous rice balls, and wontons line the street, allowing them to sample all of Chongqing's snacks while strolling. Hidden around the commercial district are Luohan Temple and Nengren Temple on Zhonghua Road, two ancient temples nestled among skyscrapers, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city. At night, the pedestrian street takes on a different vibe: building screens and neon lights illuminate the area, and the square in front of the monument becomes a popular spot for night photography. Every New Year's Eve, many locals gather under the monument to listen to the New Year's bell and count down together—a tradition that has continued for years. The crowd is enormous that night, so those wishing to experience the atmosphere should plan ahead. A short 15-minute walk from the monument leads to Hongya Cave, making it ideal to combine both locations into a nightlife route.

White Emperor City Qutang Gorge Scenic Spot

7.8
4.6/5
4k reviews

White Emperor City Qutang Gorge Scenic Spot is located by the river in Fengjie County, Chongqing, at the western entrance of the Yangtze River's Three Gorges. It consists of two parts: White Emperor City and Qutang Gorge. A historic island city surrounded by water meets a majestic and precipitous gorge gateway, where natural landscapes, Three Kingdoms relics, and millennia of poetry converge. When cruising through the Three Gorges, the gorge's panoramic scroll often begins unfolding here. White Emperor City, originally named White Emperor City Qutang Gorge Scenic Spot, was built by Gongsun Shu in the late Western Han Dynasty as a fortified city, where he proclaimed himself the "White Emperor," a name that has endured to this day. During the Three Kingdoms period, Liu Bei retreated here after his failed eastern campaign and entrusted his son to Zhuge Liang on his deathbed. The colorful sculptures in the Entrusting the Orphan Hall at the White Emperor Temple recreate this historical episode. Interestingly, while the temple's name remains unchanged, it now enshrines Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang, who were honored during the Ming Dynasty. The Mingliang Hall, Wuhou Shrine, and Star-Gazing Pavilion are built along the mountainside, while the eastern and western stele forests display inscriptions from various dynasties, worth a slow-paced appreciation. The site is also renowned as the "City of Poetry": Li Bai, pardoned and returning east, penned the timeless line "Leaving at dawn the White Emperor crowned with cloud"; Du Fu, residing in Kuizhou for nearly two years, left behind over 400 poems; and Liu Yuxi composed "Bamboo Branch Songs" while serving as the governor of Kuizhou. After the Three Gorges Reservoir was filled, the rising river level turned White Emperor Mountain into an isolated island in the high gorge's flat lake, accessible only via a long covered bridge. The Qutang Gorge stretches approx. 8 km in total. Though not the longest among the Three Gorges, it is renowned for its majestic and precipitous scenery. The gorge entrance, called Kuimen or Qutang Pass, features the sheer cliffs of Chijia Mountain and Baiyan Mountain standing opposite each other, abruptly narrowing the river. Here, the Yangtze forces its way through the pass, which has served as the vital waterway to and from Sichuan since ancient times. It also appears on the back of the fifth series CNY 10 banknote. While sailing through the gorge, visitors can spot the hanging coffins at Wind Box Gorge high on the cliffs, the orderly arranged Meng Liang's Ladder holes on Baiyan Mountain's precipice, and numerous cliff inscriptions. When visiting, consider first walking across the covered bridge to the island to explore the Tuogu Hall, stele forest, and Star Observation Pavilion, then head to the Kuimen viewing platform behind Baidi Temple—directly facing Kuimen, it offers the same perspective as depicted on the back of the CNY 10 banknote. Matching a bill with the actual view for photos has become a classic activity. To truly experience the canyon's narrowness and the river's rush, take a boat through Qutang Gorge—looking back at the cliffs from the water is far more awe-inspiring than viewing from the shore.

Furong Town

Originally named "Wang Village," Furong Town is an ancient town with a history of over two thousand years. In 1986, the film *Hibiscus Town*, directed by Xie Jin and starring Liu Xiaoqing and Jiang Wen, was shot on location here, bringing the ancient town widespread fame, and in 2007 it was officially renamed. The center of the ancient town is built atop a massive rock formation, with a waterfall dropping dozens of meters flowing through the town. Tujia stilted houses are built right next to the waterfall, earning it the name "the thousand-year-old town hanging on a waterfall." Strolling along the five-li-old street paved with bluestone slabs, you can see many local residences on both sides constructed from wooden planks, many of which have darkened with age, bearing clear traces of the passage of time. The Xizhou Bronze Pillar in the town is a precious historical witness, inscribed with a treaty of truce and alliance between the King of Chu and local chieftains during the Five Dynasties period, recording a chapter of Tujia history. The Tusi King's Palace next to the waterfall served as a summer retreat for successive generations of Tusi kings, and the area nearby is also a great spot to overlook the entire town, taking in the stilted houses, the waterfall, and the Youshui River below all at once. After nightfall, the ancient town lights up, the waterfall is illuminated with colored lights, and the night scenery is gorgeous and enchanting. Mi doufu (rice tofu), made famous by a film, is now the town's signature snack, with shops bearing "mi doufu" signs everywhere, and the one where the film was shot being especially popular. The town also offers specialty goods such as Tujia brocade, bamboo tube wine, and Guzhang Maojian tea, which you can keep as travel souvenirs.

The boat trip from Wanzu Wharf in Pengshui to Gongtan Ancient Town includes both one-way and round-trip times, as well as views of the karst landscape of the Wujiang Gallery along the way. The boat slows down at Houchouyan to offer a more refined cruise experience.

Enshi has been experiencing light rain every day recently, and fog is highly likely on the mountains. While walking along the cliffside plank road, everything was shrouded in mist, making it impossible to see anything. Fortunately, the fog cleared when we reached "One Incense Stick," and we could see. This scenic area requires a bit of luck. The entire hike takes about 5 hours (from parking lot to parking lot). The most physically demanding section is from the beginning to the "One Line Sky," while the later sections are less strenuous. I think the Earth Fissure is more unique than Qixingzhai. Enshi Grand Canyon is a karst landscape, and Qixingzhai's appearance is more like a peak forest, lacking a distinctive feature. However, the Earth Fissure is very special: the collapse of the underground cave ceiling formed the Yunlong River Fissure, and the continuous erosion and dissolution of the cliff face by flowing water has created stone curtains, which is quite interesting. The scenic area is over 1000 meters above sea level and has many maple trees. With the recent light rain and large temperature differences between day and night, the maple leaves have turned red, which is also a sight to behold.

This is a very worthwhile attraction. Project 816 was a top-secret underground nuclear project during the Third Front construction period. Construction began in 1967, with over 60,000 soldiers and civilians working anonymously to excavate tunnels inside the mountain. Over 18 years, they unearthed a massive underground cavern of over 100,000 square meters, which was once the location of the vanished town of Baitao. Construction ceased in 1984, and the project was never put into operation, posing no risk of nuclear radiation. It was declassified and opened to the public in 2010, becoming the current Project 816 scenic area. Highlights: A 79-meter-high giant reactor hall, multi-level underground tunnels, old instrument pipelines, a Third Front construction history exhibition hall, and a year-round constant temperature of approximately 18°C inside the cavern.

Baidi City is friendly to independent travelers. There are signs all the way from the high-speed rail station to the shuttle bus stop. The fare to Baidi City is 15 yuan, and to the Three Gorges Summit is 30 yuan. The bus departs as soon as there are passengers at the high-speed rail station. On the return trip, there was a 40-50 minute wait at Baidi City. On weekdays, the round trip is about 45 minutes without traffic. There is a post office and restaurants on the tourist street at the entrance. From Zhongyi Wharf, you can take a 50 yuan in-depth tour or a free ferry. Alternatively, you can walk up the flat mountain trail to Baidi City and the viewing platform; there are 300 steps to climb.
