Polonnaruwa Ancient City

Polonnaruwa Ancient City, located in the northeast of Sri Lanka, 216 km northeast of the capital, Colombo. In 1982, Polonnaruwa Ancient City was inscribed on the World Heritage List as a cultural heritage site. Site zones The monuments in the ancient city can be roughly divided into five areas: the Royal Palace complex, the Quadrangle, the Northern Group, the area near the historical hotel (i.e., on the banks of the reservoir), the Southern Group (on the way to the new town), and some scattered monuments. In the ancient city, you can find not only Brahmanical ruins from the Chola period but also the remains of the mythical garden city built by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. Here, you'll find ancient ruins, unique sacrificial altars, classic Sri Lankan stupas, and stone Buddha statues carved into walls. You can easily spend a whole day here without realizing how time flies. History Polonnaruwa served as the capital of the Chola Dynasty and the Sinhalese Kingdom, flourishing for 3 centuries. Although it has a history of nearly 1,000 years, it is better preserved thanAnuradhapura. In the second half of the 10th century, after the South Indian Chola Dynasty occupiedAnuradhapura, they established their capital in Polonnaruwa. Strategically, Polonnaruwa was undoubtedly a better choice for a capital to better guard against rebellions from the Rohana Sinhalese Kingdom in the southeast. After King Vijayabahu I drove the Chola Dynasty out of Sri Lanka in 1070, he retained Polonnaruwa as the capital. Under the reign of Parakramabahu I, the development ofPolonnaruwareached its peak. The king built massive buildings and beautiful parks, and the 25-square-kilometer reservoir is a particularly famous achievement. This reservoir is so vast that people call it the Sea of Parakrama. Since the current lake is a combination of three old reservoirs, it may not be the exact pool built by Parakramabahu back then. Nissanka Malla, the successor of Parakramabahu I, nearly bankrupted the entire country in an attempt to match the achievements of his predecessor. In the early 13th century, Polonnaruwa, likePolonnaruwaandAnuradhapura, began to suffer frequent invasions from India. Later, like the latter,Polonnaruwaalso fell, and the center of Sinhalese power shifted to the western region of Sri Lanka.Polonnaruwa · 2.2 km from downtown

We visited Minneriya hoping to see the famous elephant gatherings, but there were surprisingly few. The park’s terrain is mostly forested, with limited open plains for wildlife viewing. In contrast, Yala National Park offered a much richer experience with more wildlife sightings, including elephants.

The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has a history of more than 1,500 years. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well worth a visit. The ancient city is very large and its basic outline can still be seen.

This place is very unique, with exquisite Buddha statues and niches carved on huge granite stones, which are very representative of Sri Lankan Buddhist art. It has high historical research value and artistic value, and is recommended for visiting! !

Polonnaruwa is full of world historical and cultural heritage, especially the royal palace. The Vatadage is really amazing. It is actually a group of ancient buildings. The guard stones and moon stones of the Vatadage (circular stone house, also called square courtyard or circular Buddha house) are very beautifully carved. The moon stones here are different from those in Anuradhapura. There are different animals crossing in the same circle, while here there is one animal in each circle. Laymen like us can only see these superficial differences. The guard stones are separated on both sides of the steps to protect the Buddha statue.

Located in the north of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the Rankot Stupa is the largest stupa in the ancient city and the fourth largest stupa in Sri Lanka. It is dark red in color, made of clay, shaped like a bell, with a spire on top. The tower is 56.4 meters high and 55 meters in diameter. It was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Nisankama. There are incomplete Buddha statues and worship buildings similar to shrines around the stupa.
