Cape Rocais located at the western end of the Sintra Mountains in Portugal, part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, and is the westernmost point of continental Europe. It is approx. 140 m above sea level, with steep cliffs plunging into the Atlantic Ocean. Standing on the cliff top, you can enjoy a panoramic view where the sea meets the sky. A stone cross monument stands on the edge of the cliff, inscribed in Portuguese with the famous line by the 16th-century Portuguese poet Luís de Camões: "Where the land ends and the sea begins." Not far away is an 18th-century lighthouse that guides sailors along the windy and rough Atlantic coast. Walking along the cliff-top trail, you will see the endless ocean on one side and cliffs dropping vertically into the sea on the other, with golden light covering the sea at sunset. Admiring the magnificent Atlantic seascape and the sunset glow, and visiting the stone cross monument and the historic lighthouse are the classic and popular highlights of this destination.Portugal · Sintra

Alfamais one of Lisbon's historic districts, nestled on a hill overlooking the Tagus River, tucked between São Jorge Castle and the river bend. This area survived the Great Lisbon Earthquake and still retains its medieval street layout—winding cobblestone paths and a maze of stone stairways. As you head up the slope, you'll see colorful, old-fashioned houses on both sides, their walls adorned with blue and white tiles, and balconies often draped with laundry and blooming flowers. This is the birthplace of Fado, the national music of Portugal. After nightfall, the sounds of guitars and singing drift from Fado restaurants deep within the alleys, haunting and melodic, creating anAlfamasignature nighttime experience. During the day, the old town features several viewpoints—Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia both face the Tagus River, offering panoramic views of the layered red-tiled roofs and the river in the distance; Miradouro da Graça is situated higher up and often gathers crowds waiting for the sunset in the evening. The yellow Tram 28, which winds through the steep slopes of the old town, is an iconic image of Lisbon. At the top of the old town, you can also visit historic sites such as São Jorge Castle and Lisbon Cathedral.Portugal · Lisbon
Porto Cathedral

Porto Cathedral

7.8
4.7/5
121 reviews
Porto Cathedral stands prominently on a hill in Porto, one of the city's ancient monuments. The facade is almost devoid of decoration, making it quite unique among church architecture: two square bell towers flank the sides, with a Romanesque rose window and a Baroque-era portico set against a plain facade, while the crenellated battlements above give the entire structure a fortress-like appearance. The Baroque loggia on the side facade, designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, adds a touch of splendor to the exterior. Porto Cathedral stands majestically on the high ground of the old town, one of the ancient buildings still existing in Porto and an important example of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. The cathedral was first built around 1110 and largely completed in the 13th century, with Gothic and Baroque elements added over the following centuries: the Romanesque nave, Gothic cloister, and Baroque loggia coexist within the same structure, making a visit akin to flipping through a three-dimensional architectural history book. As a city landmark that has existed for nearly a millennium, the church was built approx. in 1110, with construction spanning a century. Even today, many intricate architectural features remain fascinating. The square bell towers on either side of the church are quite unique due to their nearly bare facades, while the crenellated structures at the top incorporate castle-like elements. Additionally, the interior features many delightful blue-and-white tile murals, a hallmark of Portuguese architecture.Portugal · Porto

The ancient city of Toledo is located in the Toledo province of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. It is a famous city with a long history and is a world cultural heritage. The ancient city has a variety of architectural styles, including Gothic, Mudejar, and Renaissance buildings. Walking through it, you feel like traveling through different historical times. The magnificent Toledo Cathedral is solemn and has exquisite interior decorations; the San Martin Bridge spans the river, and the defense tower at the bridgehead is simple and vicissitudes. In addition, there are many museums, churches, castles, etc., which preserve a large number of art treasures and historical relics, carrying the glorious past of this city. The ancient city of Toledo is like a vivid history book, and every page tells the prosperity and stories of the past, attracting tourists to explore its unique charm.Spain · Toledo

España Square

533 reviews
España Square in Seville is located in the tranquil and refreshing Parque de Maria Luisa in the southern part of the city. Its crescent-shaped classical architecture stands elegantly amidst lush greenery, making it a popular leisure spot among Seville's residents. It was built as the core architectural complex for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, designed by Seville architect Aníbal González. Parque de Maria Luisa welcomed this newly constructed España Square, a crescent-shaped complex consisting of mansions, arch bridges, fountains, and pools. The signature feature of the square is the grid of colorful ceramic niches on the lower level of the arcade: over forty niches each represent a Spanish province, displaying painted tiles depicting the province's map, historical scenes, and portraits of famous figures. Many travelers make a point to find their favorite niche for a seated photo, while the arcade columns are adorned with round plaques of notable figures and coats of arms. Visitors can relax and take photos here or rent a small wooden boat to paddle on the lake, with particularly beautiful scenery at sunset. If you take a sightseeing carriage in the city, España Square is a must-visit spot. Amid the galloping wheels, you can fully enjoy the captivating scenes of the square, whether in motion or at rest.Spain · Seville

Parque de Maria Luisa

Parque de Maria Luisa is a major public green space in Seville, extending along theRio Guadalquivirand covering an area of approx. 400,000 square meters. The park was formerly the garden of the Palacio de San Telmo and was donated to the city of Seville by Infanta Maria Luisa Fernanda in 1893. Starting in 1911, French landscape designer Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier redesigned the garden, using Moorish-style landscaping as a foundation, adding fountains, ponds, glazed tile benches, and pavilions, and planting numerous palm trees, orange trees, and Mediterranean pines to create the overall setting for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. The semi-circular España Square on the east side of the park is the centerpiece of the exposition, designed by architect Aníbal González, and blends Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Mudéjar styles. The square is surrounded by a canal where visitors can rent boats to row on the water. Along the canal, the buildings feature benches made of glazed ceramic tiles, with each set representing a historical scene from a province in Spain. The three pavilions at the southern end of the park were also built for the exposition, each adopting one of three architectural styles: Gothic, Mudéjar, or Renaissance. Today, two of them have become museums: theArchaeological Museumdisplays prehistoric and Roman-era artifacts, including mosaics and sculptures unearthed from the nearby ancient ruins of Italica; while the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions exhibits local ceramics, traditional costumes, and handicraft tools. The park is also dotted with landmarks such as the Bécquer Monument, the Lion Fountain, and the Water Lily Pond.Spain · Seville

Avenida da Liberdade

144 reviews
Avenida da Liberdade is a grand boulevard in Lisbon that starts at Restauradores Square in the south and extends north to Marquis of Pombal Square, featuring a wide roadway. It is known as Lisbon's Champs-Élysées due to its collection of hotels, brand flagship stores, and various embassies. The boulevard is lined with trees, and the pedestrian walkways are paved with black and white cobblestones in traditional Portuguese patterns. Along the way, you will find small gardens, fountains, and statues of figures such as the writer Almeida Garrett, making it a delightful place for a stroll. The history of this avenue is closely linked to the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake: it was originally a walled promenade for the nobility. It wasn't until the city expanded northward in the late 19th century that it was rebuilt into the current avenue, modeled after Parisian boulevards. At the northern roundabout stands the Estatua do Marques de Pombal, honoring the man who led the post-earthquake reconstruction. With Eduardo VII Park in the background, it is a classic vantage point to overlook the entire avenue.Portugal · Lisbon

Park of the Nations is located along the banks of theTagus Riverand was transformed from the site of the 1998 World Expo. This World Expo was themed "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future" and was held to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the explorer Vasco da Gama's arrival in India. The Vasco da Gama Tower BABYLON 360º within the park and theVasco da Gama Bridgenearby are both named after him. After the World Expo closed, this former industrial shoreline was not left idle but was transformed into a new waterfront district integrating office, cultural, residential, and commercial spaces, often regarded as a successful example of post-Expo site utilization. Strolling along the waterfront promenade that stretches along the river, you can still see many Expo buildings that have been preserved to this day: the Lisbon Oceanarium and the interactive science center, which evolved from the original pavilions, are both located here; the sail-shaped Vasco da Gama Tower BABYLON 360º, the large-span concrete canopy of the Portugal Pavilion, and the white vaulted gallery of the Gare Do Oriente make this an area concentrated with modern architecture in Lisbon, forming a sharp contrast with the narrow stone alleys of the old town. You can also take a sightseeing cable car suspended over the Tagus River to overlook the entire park and the river from above; after nightfall, the bars and restaurants along the river light up, and the lights of theVasco da Gama Bridgein the distance are clearly visible.Portugal · Lisbon

Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco)

4.8/5
103 reviews
Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) is located in Lisbon's Baixa Pombalina and is an open square facing the Tagus River. Because the former royal Ribeira Palace was once located here, it is still often referred to as Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco). Historically, King Manuel I moved the royal residence from São Jorge Castle on the hill to the riverside, and this area subsequently developed into an important port and shipbuilding hub. The tsunami and fire triggered by the 1755 earthquake destroyed the Ribeira Palace along with the royal library, which housed tens of thousands of books. When the Marquis of Pombal oversaw the reconstruction, he did not restore the palace but instead planned the area as a large U-shaped square enclosed by yellow arcaded buildings on three sides and facing the river on the fourth. He renamed it "Commerce" to signify the shift from royal power to trade, and these arcaded buildings were long used as offices for various government departments. Today, a bronze equestrian statue of King José I stands in the center of the square. The dark horse rears its front hooves, trampling a snake that symbolizes chaos, and the front of the pedestal is embedded with a relief bust of the Marquis of Pombal. The statue faces the Tagus River and is aligned with theRua Augusta Archto the north. The columned pier on the riverside consists of marble steps and a pair of stone columns, where foreign dignitaries arriving in Lisbon by boat would disembark in the past. This square has also witnessed historical moments such as the assassination of King Carlos I and the Crown Prince in 1908 and the Carnation Revolution in 1974, and the old cafes within the arcades were once places where intellectuals gathered to talk.Portugal · Lisbon

Rossio Square

Rossio Square is located at the end of Rua Augusta. Since the Middle Ages, it has been one of the city's main public squares, historically serving as a stage for popular uprisings, celebrations, bullfights, and even executions. Today, it has evolved into a gathering place that both Lisboners and tourists love to visit. The square's official name is actually "Praça de D. Pedro IV," but locals have never accepted this name, which was only adopted in the 19th century, and continue to use the old name "Rossio," which means "public square" in old Portuguese. The square is not large, but its attractions are quite concentrated. The ground is paved with black and white cobblestones in a continuous wave pattern, a classic design of Portuguese pavement, which looks like a rolling sea from a distance. At the center, the commemorative column is topped by a statue of Pedro IV, who is dressed in a general's uniform, wearing a laurel wreath, and holding the charter he promulgated. The four corners of the column base are decorated with four female statues symbolizing justice, wisdom, fortitude, and temperance, which are considered annotations of his virtues. The two bronze fountains next to the column were shipped from France. The National Theater on the north side and the Neo-Manueline facade of the train station to the northwest are also worth looking up to admire. Most of the buildings surrounding the square date back to the reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake, continuing the uniform facades of the Pombaline downtown district. The surrounding cafes are mostly quite old. Café Nicola, which opened in the 18th century, was once a place where the poet Bocage and his friends would gather to talk.Portugal · Lisbon

This is the westernmost point of the European continent, like the end of the world. I'm not introducing this place, but it's a place I've dreamed of visiting since my freshman year of college. After starting work, I waited for many years, and last December, I finally had the chance to go. The moment my ride-hailing car arrived, reaching the paradise I had longed for for so many years, I was so excited that I couldn't stop crying. This place is like a fairyland. As someone who has loved geography since childhood, of course I studied the granite sea-eroded landforms of the Atlantic Ocean.

My recent visit to Plaza España in Sevilla was an unforgettable experience, highlighting the architectural magnificence and cultural richness of this iconic Spanish landmark. Designed by Aníbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the plaza is a stunning example of Renaissance Revival architecture, with a unique blend of Moorish elements that pay homage to Spain's rich history. As I walked along the semi-circular brick building, I was captivated by the intricate ceramic tiles, known as azulejos, depicting the history and culture of each Spanish province. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in these artworks were astounding, offering a colorful mosaic of Spain's diverse regions. The bridges crossing the small canal, which reflects the beautiful façade, added to the romantic atmosphere of the plaza. The expansive central square, with its large fountain, was a vibrant gathering place for locals and tourists alike, echoing with the sounds of flamenco music and the sight of traditional dance performances. The grandeur of the Plaza España, set against the backdrop of Seville's clear blue skies, provided a picturesque setting that was both awe-inspiring and inviting.Exploring the Plaza España was not only a visual feast but also a deep dive into the cultural heart of Seville. It stood as a testament to the city's historical significance and its ongoing celebration of Andalusian culture and traditions. This visit left me with a profound appreciation for Spain's architectural beauty and its rich tapestry of history and art. visit it!

Vasco da Gama Bridge 🆚 Sports Park (Vasco da Gama Bridge) One of the longest bridges in Europe, 17.2 kilometers long. The bridge is located in the parish of Moscavide, about 10 kilometers northeast of Lisbon, part of the city of Loures, close to the Tagus River. On both sides of the bridge is a quiet modern community with a slow-paced atmosphere. It is also popular among locals because of its proximity to Lisbon Airport and the modern National Park (Parque das Nações); especially the sports park under the bridge, which is close to the water and has a large green space. In the evening, sports enthusiasts run on the overhead walkway from time to time, and there are sports figures everywhere on the tennis courts, padle courts and football fields.
