Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools

Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools

4.2
Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools is located on the northwest tip of the Madeira Archipelago in Portugal and is a unique natural attraction and popular swimming destination. These natural pools are formed by volcanic rock and connect to the Atlantic Ocean, offering visitors a seawater swimming spot that is both safe and exhilarating. The pool area includes several pools of varying sizes with moderate depths, making them suitable for visitors of all ages. Clear seawater continually flows into the rock pools, keeping the water clean. The surrounding volcanic rock forms a natural barrier that protects swimmers from the direct impact of waves. In addition to providing a refreshing place to swim, the site offers views of Madeira Island's dramatic coastline and beautiful sunsets. Combining natural scenery and leisure activities, it is one of the highlights of a trip to Madeira Island.Porto Moniz · 211m from downtown
Piscinas Naturais Velhas

Piscinas Naturais Velhas

4.1
Piscinas Naturais Velhas, located in the Porto Moniz area of Madeira Island, Portugal, is a complex of natural seawater pools formed by the interaction of volcanic lava and seawater. Originally a natural pool used by locals for daily bathing, the pools formed naturally due to depressions in the volcanic rock walls and the lapping of waves, creating a series of pools of varying sizes. The diverse rock formations surrounding the pools create a unique landscape, and the clear water offers views of reefs and small fish, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and photography. Located on the North Atlantic coast, the pools enjoy a mild climate, with summer sea temperatures reaching approximately 22-24°C and winters slightly cooler but generally still warm. Basic facilities include a walkway from the shore, a smooth concrete entrance, showers, and changing rooms, though some are relatively basic, giving them a more natural feel. Be aware that the rock surfaces are often covered in algae, making them slippery, dry, and uneven, so proceed with caution.Porto Moniz · 429m from downtown

We missed this spot yesterday on the way to Porto Moniz, but we had a glimpse, so we decided to come back. It was not disappointing although we had to drive another 1 hour each way from Funchal. The view is magnificent, one of the best views in Madeira. There is a walk way up through a cave in the rock where you can get a good photo of the view. We saw some people fishing nearby. There is also a small stream where you can see wild geese swimming in December. Definitely a must visit place in Madeira!!
