Puerta del Sol

594 reviews
Puerta del Sol is the central square of Madrid, surrounded by many historic buildings. The square was once the place where Napoleon's army invaded Madrid and confronted the citizens. Now it is a place for major parades and gatherings and leisure and entertainment for citizens and tourists. No matter day or night, it is always crowded and full of vitality. Plaza Building The Puerta del Sol square is semicircular, surrounded by houses and buildings, many of which can be called the essence of Madrid's urban architecture. On the south side of Puerta del Sol stands the iconic old postal building (LaCasadeCorreos), an old red and white building in the square that resembles a majestic palace. The bell tower in the middle of the building is very famous. Every New Year's Eve, Madrid people will gather here to celebrate the arrival of the new year by eating 12 grapes symbolizing good luck when the clock strikes 12 midnight. There is a sign on the pedestrian walkway in front of the "zero point sign" postal building, which is marked "zero point" (Kilómetro Cero). All road milestones in Spain are calculated from here, and the house number of the city of Madrid is also here. for the starting point. "Bear and Raspberry Statue" The symbol of Madrid City The "Bear and Raspberry" statue (Estatua del Osoyel Madroño) is located in the east of Puerta del Sol. This statue replaces the previous ruins of Puerta del Sol, and is now a very popular landmark in Madrid. The little bear stood upright, holding the raspberry tree in front of his front paws, lifelike. Now it is also a meeting place for many locals. Statue of Carlos III In the center of the Puerta del Sol Square stands the equestrian statue of Carlos III (EstatuaecuestredeCarlosIII). Next to the statue is a large fountain surrounded by flowers and steps for visitors to rest. In addition, the building itself of the Puerta del Sol (Sol) station on the square is also a highlight. The arched glass building shines in the sun, and the avant-garde shape like a shell is quite eye-catching among the traditional and classical buildings in the square. . Square Activities You can watch and take pictures at will in the square, or you can sit by the fountain, feed the pigeons, and enjoy the wonderful street performers. Puerta del Sol is also a commercial area. You can find flagship stores around Topshop, Sephora, Springfield, and Real Madrid. You can also see the building of the wine cellar TioPepe. The Ingles department store is also close at hand. To the Grand Avenue, to the west is the Callao business district, which is definitely a good place for shopping. In addition, there are many bars and cafes in the alley on the south side of the square, which are very local in Madrid, and the prices are very close to the people. You might as well try the feeling of beer with tapa (Madrid snacks). Puerta del Sol Square is also very lively at night with beautiful scenery at midnight. At the beginning of the lanterns, people are surging. At this time, Puerta del Sol Square may better interpret the essence of Madrid nightlife. Street teenagers dancing in the square, sentimental saxophone players, whispering couples...all are a beautiful scenery. If you happen to come here at midnight, facing the still crowded crowd in the square, and the cheers one after another, please don't be surprised, this city is saying to you in a unique way: Welcome to Puerta del Sol, welcome to Puerta del Sol. Come to sleepless Madrid!Spain · Madrid

Located at the western end of Gran Via, just a few steps from the Royal Palace of Madrid, Plaza de España (Madrid) is one of Madrid's more popular attractions, famous for the Monument to Cervantes. There are two striking buildings behind Plaza de España (Madrid): Torre de Madrid and Edificio Espana, the former European high-rises built in 1948. The top floors of both buildings are good places to enjoy panoramic views of Madrid. In the center of the Plaza de España (Madrid), there is a monument to the great Spanish writer Cervantes. The statue of Cervantes sits in front of the monument and overlooks Don Quixote, who is holding a spear and riding a thin horse, and his loyal stout. The statue of the servant Sancho, in addition, two stone statues representing Don Quixote's true love stand on both sides of the monument: the ordinary village girl Ardonsa Rorenzo and the imaginary beautiful Dulcinea Del Tor Poso. The rectangular pool on the square and the high-rise buildings behind the statue cover each other, which makes the statue have the beauty of spatial perspective and is a good location for photography. The sun in Spain is relatively strong, and it is backlit in the morning. It is recommended to shoot from this angle in the afternoon.Spain · Madrid

Mercado de San Miguel

173 reviews
Mercado de San Miguel is a market in Madrid, Spain, that brings together food, culture, and social life. Built in 1916, the construction featuring a wrought-iron frame combined with large glass panels was quite sophisticated for Madrid at the time. Today, it remains one of the city's representative iron structures, and its transparent glass facade makes the entire hall bright and airy, attracting numerous tourists and local residents. Its predecessor was an open-air fish market on the square, which was later converted into a covered market. After being renovated and reopened in 2009, it transformed from a traditional grocery market into a gourmet market themed around Spanish tapas. Since then, Michelin-starred chefs have set up stalls here, serving traditional-style paella. More than 30 stalls are arranged along the atrium, offering everything from seafood shipped directly from the Galician coast and freshly sliced Iberian ham to cheeses, olives, and desserts from all over Spain, bringing almost all the country's signature flavors under one roof.Spain · Madrid

Plaza Mayor is located in the heart of Madrid's old town. It was established in the early 17th century during the reign of King Philip III and has served as the city's public stage for markets, bullfights, and various celebrations for centuries. It has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times, and its current layout largely dates back to the late 18th century, designed by the architect Villanueva. The square is a regular rectangle, enclosed on all four sides by old buildings with uniform arcaded facades. Nine external arches connect it to the surrounding streets, and over 200 balconies open onto the square in tiers. Being there feels like stepping into an open-air hall enclosed on all sides. Today, under the arcades, outdoor cafes and souvenir shops are lined up one after another, and portrait artists and street performers set up their stalls here all year round. The bronze equestrian statue of Philip III in the center of the square was created by Italian sculptors Giambologna and Pietro Tacca, and flocks of pigeons often fly around the statue. At one end, the Casa de la Panadería is flanked by two towers, and its outer walls are covered with colorful murals depicting mythological themes, making it an exceptionally photogenic backdrop in the square.Spain · Madrid

Retiro Park boasts numerous main attractions, including the Statue Avenue, the Crystal Palace, the artificial lake and more, making it a great place to relax and unwind. You can sit on a bench in the park, or lie on the grass, bask in the sun, watch the little squirrels or pigeons play and watch the Spanish children playing in the grass. Have fun and enjoy some free time in Madrid.  Statue Avenue and Rose Garden The statues displayed along the statue avenue in the park are similar to those in the Oriental Square. They are all 20 emperors in Spanish history. The Rose Garden was designed and built by the chief designer of Retiro Park according to the design and construction of the Reed Rose Garden in the Bois de Boulogne Park in Paris. At that time, different varieties of roses collected from various botanical gardens in Europe were gathered here. Now there are more than 4,000 roses in the garden. When the roses bloom in May and June, the garden is full of fragrance. King Alfonso XII Monument and Artificial Lake The artificial lake in the center of Retiro Park is very popular. On one side of the lake stands the Monument to King Alfonso XII, about 32 meters high. The bronze statue of the twelfth century, the columns below it are arranged in a half-moon shape, which is very spectacular. There are bronze lion statues on both sides of the monument, which are lifelike and majestic. In the artificial lake, in addition to admiring the majestic King Alfonso XII Monument, you can also rent pedal boats to go boating on the lake, with black swans and teal ducks swimming by, which is very interesting. Crystal Palace and Velasquez House The Crystal Palace next to the artificial lake is one of the famous attractions in Retiro Park. This crystal clear glass house is currently open to the public as an exhibition hall like the nearby Velasquez House. Mainly used for art exhibitions.Spain · Madrid

Gran Via is a major avenue in the center of Madrid, similar to the Champs-Élysées in Paris or Fifth Avenue in New York. It starts in the east at Plaza de Cibeles and extends westward to Plaza de España (Madrid), cutting through the heart of the old town. It is one of Madrid's most important shopping and entertainment districts, with restaurants, shops, cinemas, and theaters lining the street. Known as the Spanish Broadway due to the density of its performance venues, it hosts musicals and other shows all year round. The street itself is like an architectural exhibition. The Metropolis Building at the eastern intersection is famous for its golden dome and the statue of the Goddess of Victory on top, making it highly recognizable. Not far to the west is the Telefonica building, built in the 1920s, which was a rare high-rise building in Madrid when it was completed.Spain · Madrid

Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena is adjacent to the Royal Palace of Madrid and serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. Its gray-white stone exterior walls, dome, and twin towers complement the palace's facade, forming a striking landmark in the old town. Construction of the cathedral began in 1883 and was not completed until 1993, spanning over a century. During this time, work was halted for a long period due to the Spanish Civil War. After construction resumed in 1950, the exterior design was changed from the original Neo-Gothic style to Neoclassical to blend in with the surroundings of the palace, while the interior retained its Neo-Gothic framework. Upon its completion, it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. In 2004, Felipe, then Crown Prince (now the King of Spain), held his wedding here. Remnants of the city wall still remain beside the cathedral. Legend has it that when Madrid was reconquered, the statue of the Virgin Mary enshrined in the cathedral was rediscovered in a tower of the city wall. A niche containing a statue of the Virgin Mary, marking this legend, still stands on the Cuesta de la Vega beside the cathedral.Spain · Madrid

Temple of Debod dates back to the 2nd century BC and now stands on a hillside in Parque del Oeste in the center of Madrid. It is one of the few ancient Egyptian temples moved outside of Egypt, and the only one in Spain. In the 1960s, when the Aswan High Dam reservoir threatened to submerge Nubian monuments, a Spanish team participated in the rescue of the Abu Simbel temples. As a token of gratitude, the Egyptian government gifted this temple to Spain in 1968. It was dismantled block by block, transported to Madrid for reconstruction, and opened to the public in 1972. Three stone pylons stand in front of the temple, and ancient Egyptian reliefs are still preserved on the interior stone walls. There is also a small exhibition area that uses models and video materials to tell the story of its journey across the ocean and its reconstruction in a new location. A reflecting pool in front of the temple captures the temple's image, and at dusk, the glow of the setting sun fills the water, making it a popular local sunset viewing spot.Spain · Madrid

Plaza de Cibeles is located in the center of Madrid, at the intersection of Calle de Alcalá and Paseo del Prado. It is named after the fountain of the goddess of the earth in the center of the square and is considered one of the symbols of Madrid. The statue of the goddess Cybele in the square is the patron saint of the Real Madrid team, and whenever the team wins a major tournament, they come here to celebrate! Cibeles Fountain was built during the reign of Charles III and is the work of the renowned sculptor Francisco Gutiérrez. Several grand buildings occupy the corners of the square: the Palace of Communication on the southeast corner resembles a palace and served as the General Post Office for a long time; today, it is the Madrid City Hall. The Buenavista Palace on the northwest corner is nestled in the greenery of its gardens and serves as the headquarters of the Spanish Army; on the southwest side is the headquarters of the Bank of Spain.Spain · Madrid

Even if you’re not looking for food, walking through is a fun way to overview Madrid’s general culinary scene. The whole market is huge, and you’ll have to walk through a couple loops if you want to get a good idea of all the options (which I recommend doing anyways).

Gran Vía is the most famous street in Madrid. It was built between 1910 and 1929. Sometimes referred to as the "Spanish Broadway", this street is one of the most important shopping areas in the city, with a large number of hotels and large cinemas. However, since the late 2000s, many theaters have been replaced by shopping malls.

The Temple of Debod was not quite what I expected. Although it was an ancient monument moved from Egypt, it did not give me the sense of history of ancient Egypt. It may be because there is no such group of ancient monuments. As I said, the scenery here is pretty good at dusk. If you are interested, you can come and have a look.

Madrid's city emblem: raspberry and brown bear This story gave the city of Madrid a name Interesting and vivid, the raspberry and brown bear in front of Puerta del Sol are the best witnesses The city emblem tells an interesting story: The original meaning of the name Madrid is "Mom, run fast" Legend has it that a long time ago, one day a little boy went out to play with his mother. He was very naughty, jumping and walking, and he was far away from his mother. Just when he wanted to go back to find his mother, he suddenly met a brown bear. The little boy ran away, and the brown bear chased him closely. In a hurry, the little boy climbed up a big tree. He just took a few breaths on the tree, and suddenly heard his mother's call. It turned out that his mother was looking for him. But the brown bear under the tree was looking for him. When his mother saw this scene, she would definitely come to save him, and the brown bear would hurt her... Thinking of this, he shouted to his mother from the tree: "Mom, run - Mom, run -" Some people said that his shouting attracted hunters, while others said that his shouting scared away the brown bear. No matter how many versions there are, this brave boy left a beautiful legend for the city.
