Amazon River

Amazon River originates in the Andes in Peru, flows from west to east across the South American continent, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean in northern Brazil. Its main stream flows through Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, with most of its course located within Brazil. The basin covers several countries in South America, with numerous tributaries and a discharge volume that far exceeds that of other rivers. Visitors can travel by boat along the river through the vast tropical rainforest. In the waters near Manaus, they have the opportunity to observe the Amazon river dolphin. Adults have pink skin and are notably large among freshwater dolphins. The Anavilhanas Archipelago on the Rio Negro consists of hundreds of river islands covered with seasonally flooded forests, making it a representative area for experiencing the intertwined water and land ecosystem here.

Meeting of Waters

Meeting of Waters lies 10 kilometers downstream from Manaus, where the dark waters of the Rio Negro meet the pale, yellowish Solimões River; only after merging do they officially form the main stem of the Amazon River. This stretch of water has become a popular attraction in the vicinity of Manaus. Viewed from downstream, the contrast is striking: the murky yellow Solimões on the left and the inky black Rio Negro on the right remain distinct, separated by a clear line that cleaves the broad expanse of water in two—like a watery fissure dividing two separate worlds. With a temperature difference of several degrees Celsius between the two rivers, navigating the area offers a vivid, firsthand experience of the contrasting conditions, serving as a compelling natural lesson in understanding the Amazon river system.

Indian Museum

Indian Museum officially opened on April 19, 1953, to celebrate American Indian Day, as part of the research division of SPI (Indian Protection Service). SPI was created by Marechal Rondon in 1910 and remained the agency responsible for assisting indigenous people until FUNAI was established in 1967. Indian Museum operated in the residence on Maracanã Mata Machado Street until it moved in 1978. This old building, which still exists today, was managed by the National Supply Company and the Ministry of Agriculture, and was later purchased by the Rio de Janeiro State government. The current residence is neoclassical in style, built in 1880 at the request of a businessman in the food industry.
