Książ is one of the largest castles in Poland. This huge and beautifully situated architectural complex is exceptional on a European scale. The von Hochberg dynasty’s aristocratic history is intertwined with the mysteries of the Second World War Nazi tunnels. The castle is well worth the visit. It is 58km from Wroclaw and easy to visit as a day trip using the train to Szczaweinko then and bus (#12). The tunnels under the courtyard were built by the Nazis during WWII using forced labour and the main ones are 6m wide. The underground tour takes about 30mins and timed entry as it has to be escorted. Every half an hour. Do it as the first thing getting to the castle. The guide speaks in Polish and an audio guide is given to those using other languages. There is nothing to see except the tunnels and what is most important is the story of how and why they were built. It is an important part of military history. The audio guide automatically plays as you walk around including providing the translation for what the guide says and for the movie clips that are shown at different places in the tunnels. Inside the castle there are exhibitions that provide the history of the family that used to live there. The castle is now owned by the town. You get to see some reconstructions of rooms and appreciate the architecture. The grand hall is indeed grand and can be viewed as the highlight of the interior. An audio tour is included ; this operates automatically and guides you around, also there are options to listen to additional info be pressing your audio guide against the receptor. It is very efficient and well organised. I visited in December so the inside of the castle was decorated with many Christmas trees and table decorations. Considerable effort is put into Christmas spirit. Outside the castle are terraces and gardens. During the time I was there the gardens were closed until 5pm (when dark) as they were lit up with different decorations.
