The obelisk

85 reviews
The obelisk stands in the Plaza de la República and is one of the city's iconic landmarks. In 1936, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Buenos Aires, Argentine modernist architect Alberto Prebisch designed this monument, using the Luxor Obelisk in Egypt as a prototype. The monument is approx. 67.5 m high, features a reinforced concrete structure, and is clad in white stone from Cordoba, with geometric lines throughout. The site it occupies has a unique historical background—it was once the location of the Church of St. Nicholas, where the Argentine flag was first raised in Buenos Aires. Inside the monument, there is a 206-step staircase leading to windows on all four sides at the top. Its surroundings are also a hub of urban vitality: the Avenida 9 de Julio is known for its width, Corrientes Avenue brings together numerous theaters and restaurants, and multiple subway lines intersect underground. Whether it is citizens celebrating after a sports victory, or street art and public gatherings, this place has always been a central point where people spontaneously gather.Buenos Aires · 26.9 km from Tigre

Barrio Chino is located in the Belgrano district of the capital and is one of the core gathering places for the Chinese community in Argentina. It formed spontaneously through the settlement and business operations of Asian immigrants, and today it extends to both sides with Arribeños Street as its axis. It is adjacent to the train station and offers convenient transportation. The iconic Chinese-style archway at the entrance features marble pillars adorned with stone lion carvings, and the "Chinatown" inscription on the lintel is very eye-catching. The core section within the archway has been designated as a pedestrian street, where Asian restaurants and supermarkets are densely distributed across just a few short streets. In addition, a Buddhist temple is located here. The shelves of the Chinese supermarkets are stocked with Asian ingredients, and with options ranging from Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cuisine to Thai food, the variety of flavors is quite rich.Buenos Aires · 18.8 km from Tigre

Plaza de Mayo

Plaza de Mayo is the main square of Buenos Aires, with a history dating back to the city's founding by the Spanish in 1580. The square was formerly the colonial-era Plaza de la Victoria and Plaza del Fuerte. In 1884, the colonnade separating the two squares was demolished, and they were merged and officially named after the May Revolution of 1810—a revolution that took place on May 25 and marked the beginning of Argentina's path to independence from Spanish colonial rule. In the center of the square stands the Pirámide de Mayo, built in 1811 to commemorate the first anniversary of the May Revolution. It is surrounded by several iconic buildings: the pink Casa Rosada at the east end, and the colonial-era Cabildo at the west end, which is now a museum displaying historical artifacts from the May Revolution; to the north is theBuenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral. These buildings, with their diverse yet harmonious architectural styles, make the square feel like an open-air history museum.Buenos Aires · 27.9 km from Tigre

La Boca

La Boca is an old neighborhood next to the port of Buenos Aires. In the late 19th century, large numbers of Italian and Spanish immigrants settled here, making a living as port stevedores and shipbuilders. They used leftover ship paint to paint their corrugated iron shacks, accidentally creating the colorful street view seen today. The heart of the neighborhood is a pedestrian street called Caminito, which has been turned into an open-air museum. The high-saturation colored houses on both sides are clustered, and the walls are covered with murals and reliefs by local artists. Tango dancers often perform impromptu shows along the street. La Boca is considered one of the important birthplaces of tango, and the name of Caminito itself is taken from a tango song of the same name. The neighborhood also carries a rich football culture. The home stadium ofArgentine football club Boca Juniors, Estadio Alberto J Armando, is nearby, where Maradona once played wearing the blue and gold jersey. A team museum is located next to the stadium, displaying collections such as trophies and jerseys from over the years.Buenos Aires · 30.6 km from Tigre

Floralis Generica is a giant kinetic metal sculpture in Plaza de las Naciones Unidas, designed and donated by Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano and completed in 2002. The sculpture's Spanish name, "Floralis Genérica," means "representative of all flowers." It is cast from stainless steel and aluminum, stands approx. 23m high, is composed of 6 giant petals, has a total weight of approx. 18 tons, and stands in the center of a reflecting pool with a diameter of approx. 44m. When fully bloomed, the flower reaches a diameter of approx. 32m, and approx. 16m when closed. The design of the Floralis Generica is inspired by the circadian rhythm of flowers in nature—the petals open slowly at dawn and close gradually at dusk, remaining closed during strong winds to protect the petal structure. The Floralis Generica is adjacent to the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires, surrounded by lush trees, with the pool reflecting the metallic luster of the petals.Buenos Aires · 24.3 km from Tigre

Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral

7.5
4.4/5
76 reviews
Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral is located next to Plaza de Mayo and serves as the mother church of the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. A modest chapel was built on this site as early as the late 16th century, but it underwent multiple reconstructions due to structural issues and other reasons. The main structure seen today dates back to the mid-18th century, blending an 18th-century nave and dome with a 19th-century Neoclassical facade, with construction spanning nearly a century. The cathedral's exterior is quite unique—it lacks a bell tower, featuring instead a triangular pediment supported by twelve Neoclassical columns. The columns symbolize the twelve apostles, and the relief on the pediment depicts the reunion of Joseph and his father Jacob in Egypt, symbolizing national unity. Stepping inside, the nave and transept unfold beneath soaring vaulted ceilings, with floors paved in Venetian-style mosaics and decorations primarily in Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Baroque styles. Precious artifacts from the colonial period can still be seen: the Rococo-style gilded main altar, crafted in 1785, stands in the main chapel, and the Christ figure, carved by Portuguese sculptor Manuel do Coyto in 1671, is one of the oldest sculptures in the church. The cathedral also houses a German pipe organ built in 1871, which has over 3,000 pipes. Behind the cathedral's facade, there is an eternal flame dedicated to San Martín and the unknown soldiers of the War of Independence.Buenos Aires · 27.7 km from Tigre

Plaza del Congreso

37 reviews
Plaza del Congreso is located opposite the Argentine National Congress building and is one of the representative city squares in Buenos Aires. The square consists of three connected open spaces, covers a total area of approx. 3 hectares, was designed by French-Argentine urban planner Carlos Thays, and was completed in 1910. The core landmark of the square is the Monument to the Two Congresses, a collaboration between Belgian sculptor Jules Lagae and architect Eugène D'Huicque, which was officially unveiled in 1914. The bronze sculpture in the center of the monument symbolizes the Argentine Republic, while the figures on either side represent the Assembly of the Year XIII and the Congress of Tucumán of 1816—the latter being the historic meeting that declared Argentina's independence from the Spanish Empire. The large stepped fountain in front of the monument is inspired by the Río de la Plata and its tributaries, the Uruguay River and the Paraná River, and is surrounded by bronze statues of horses, Andean condors, and other symbols of the nation's natural wildlife. On the east side of the square, there is also an original bronze cast of Rodin's "The Thinker," which was commissioned from Rodin himself by the Buenos Aires Museum in 1907. On the same side, there is a "Zero Kilometer" stone marker, which marks the starting point of Argentina's national highway system. You can reach it by heading west from Plaza de Mayo along Avenida de Mayo; the streets along the way retain a distinct European architectural style, and flocks of pigeons can be found resting in the square all year round.Buenos Aires · 26.9 km from Tigre

Puerto Madero

Puerto Madero is a very modern waterfront neighborhood in Buenos Aires, converted from an old port dating back to the late 19th century. This area was once one of the earlier ports built in Buenos Aires, but it fell into decline after the port's functions were relocated, until large-scale urban renewal began in the 1990s. The former red-brick warehouses and granaries have been converted into loft apartments, offices, hotels, and restaurants. They stand side-by-side with brand-new glass curtain wall high-rises, and this blend of old and new has become the neighborhood's signature cityscape. A prominent landmark in the port area is the Puente de la Mujer, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, with a shape inspired by a pair of tango dancers. Strolling along the dockside promenade, you can board the ARA Sarmiento frigate moored at the pier to visit and learn about the history of the Argentine Navy. The east side of the port area is adjacent to the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, a rare, large-scale natural wetland within Buenos Aires that is home to a large number of birds. In addition, the streets in the port area are all named after prominent women in Argentine history, and there are several cultural venues along the way.Buenos Aires · 29.3 km from Tigre

53 reviews
Plaza General San Martín is located in the Retiro district of Buenos Aires. Shaded by trees and featuring undulating terrain, it is a rare, tranquil oasis in the bustling city center. The bronze equestrian statue in the center is the focal point, created by French sculptor Louis-Joseph Daumas. The general's pose, reining in his horse, complements the bronze reliefs depicting war scenes around the base, and it is also a popular spot for tourists to take photos. On the side facing Avenida del Libertador stands the Malvinas War Memorial. The names of the fallen are engraved on several black marble slabs, creating a solemn atmosphere where citizens often come to lay flowers. On one side is a gentle slope covered in grass, from which you can see the Torre Monumental standing across the street. On the other side, ancient trees provide shade, with ombú and jacaranda trees dotting the area, surrounded by historic buildings of various styles, such as the Edificio Kavanagh and the Palacio Paz.Buenos Aires · 26.5 km from Tigre

The Obelisk of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is located in the heart of the entire city, that is, the center of the city. It is still very commemorative. If you are interested in history, don't miss it here

Although there is a memorial archway, Chinatown is not very large. There are just a few restaurants, and even fewer of them serve Chinese cuisine. Most of them serve modified Argentinian cuisine.

La Boca is a very vibrant and colorful area in Buenos Aires. it is an area with colorful houses, shops and restaurants. be sure to go during the day and do not wear fancy clothing or jewelries and not to cross over to Baraccas due to safety reason. otherwise it is a nice stroll and walk through city.

The Argentine Steel Flower is a mechanical miracle blooming on the streets of Buenos Aires, stunning the world with its beauty of both rigidity and softness. This giant sculpture made of stainless steel and aluminum has a diameter of 23 meters. Its 18 petals are like smart wings. Through a sophisticated hydraulic device, they open and close with the rise and fall of sunlight. During the day, the metal petals stretch in the sun, shining with a cold luster, as if embracing the blue sky; when night falls, the petals slowly close, and the streamlined outline complements the city lights, mysterious and elegant. It is not only a perfect combination of modern art and engineering technology, but also a metaphor for Argentina's vigorous vitality and romantic feelings. Pedestrians on the street stop to stare, and children chase the light and shadow to play. This breathing sculpture has long surpassed the scope of art and has become a symbol of urban vitality and poetry. Between steel and softness, it tells the eternal rhythm of nature.

The cathedral was originally quite simple and has undergone several renovations. The current building is a synthesis of various architectural styles, including the 18th-century central aisle and dome, and the 19th-century neoclassical facade; it lacks a bell tower. The interior preserves precious 18th-century sculptures and altar decorations, as well as rich Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque ornamentation. On the right side of the cathedral lies the tomb of San Martín, the Latin American national hero, topped with a bronze reclining statue of him. Originally, soldiers in World War I red and blue uniforms, holding guns, kept vigil there, but this has not been restored since the pandemic.

Feel the 9th of July Avenue here, take a walk, take photos, and slowly watch the night fall. Cars and people are passing by, and the Obelisk is so beautiful at night. You will fall in love with the city of Buenos Aires over and over again at this moment. So I strongly recommend coming here in the evening for a date, chat, and walk. The atmosphere is really great.

It seems like many heroes are named San Martín. This is another memorial square named after San Martín. It's not very big, and there aren't many people during the day. There aren't many lighting effects at night either. It's just average. You can take a look when you pass by, but don't make a special effort to see it.
