Mornington Peninsula Shire

101 reviews
Mornington Peninsula Shire is located in Victoria, Australia, on the southern side of the Melbourne metropolitan area, and is connected to the mainland at its northern end via the Frankston area. The peninsula is surrounded by the sea on three sides. The western side of Port Phillip Bay is calm, while the southern side faces the open waves of Bass Strait, across from Phillip Island. It is about a 1-hour drive from Melbourne to switch into this seaside vacation rhythm. This peninsula has several highly recognizable highlights: Arthur's Seat in the center features a sightseeing cable car, and as it slowly climbs to the summit, you get a panoramic view of Port Phillip Bay and the peninsula's coastline. In the Point Nepean National Park at the southern tip, coastal trails extend along the cliffs, with the Cape Schanck Lighthouse and military relics from over 100 years ago scattered throughout. It is also a well-known cool-climate wine region in Victoria, with a high density of wineries around Red Hill, known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Taking a cruise from Sorrento Pier offers the chance to encounter wild dolphins and Australian fur seals in Port Phillip Bay. The town of Sorrento is worth setting aside half a day for: European settlers arrived as early as 1803, more than 30 years before the founding of Melbourne, and the main street still retains old buildings constructed from local limestone. After exploring the town, you can browse local markets for produce and handicrafts, or soak in an open-air hot spring built along the hillside. If you enjoy the water, the beaches on the western bay side have shallow water and calm waves, suitable for swimming and kayaking. The ocean beaches on the southern side have larger waves and are a haven for surfers. There are well-established spots for diving and fishing here, and you may even have the chance to see weedy seadragons underwater. If you have extra time, you can also take a ferry from Sorrento across Port Phillip Bay to Queenscliff on the other side, which offers another perspective of the peninsula from the sea.Tuerong · 1.9 km from downtown

Carlton Gardens covers an area of approx. 26 hectares and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004, together with the Royal Exhibition Building located within the gardens. The garden maintains a Victorian-style landscape, with open lawns and avenues lined with plane trees complementing each other. Multiple tree-lined paths connect historical buildings with leisure areas. The garden features 3 fountains, among which the one designed by sculptor Joseph Hochgertel for the 1880 exhibition is particularly striking, and 2 decorative small lakes are located in the southern part. The garden is planted with various trees, including English oaks, elms, London plane trees, and Moreton Bay figs, offering different scenery throughout the seasons. The Melbourne Museum on the north side forms a sharp contrast with the classical garden through its modern architectural language, and the same area also features a children's playground inspired by the Victorian maze. The garden is perfect for a stroll; people can walk along the tree-lined paths or rest on the lawns to experience urban garden life in Melbourne.Carlton · 56.2 km from Tuerong

State Library Victoria is located in the center of Melbourne, founded on the same day as the University of Melbourne in 1854, and opened to the public in 1856. It is one of the oldest public libraries in Australia. The library was designed by architect Joseph Reed and established through the efforts of then-Lieutenant Governor La Trobe and Judge Redmond Barry, among others. It was positioned from its inception as a cultural institution integrating books, art, and science. The core highlight is the La Trobe Reading Room, completed in 1913. The height and diameter of the octagonal hall both exceed 30m, the central dome skylight allows natural light to pour in, and the surrounding multi-level galleries taper inward. Overlooking the entire hall from the upper galleries is one of the most popular photo angles in Melbourne; the galleries also house a permanent exhibition themed around rare books called "The World of the Book". The collection exceeds 5 million items, ranging from books and manuscripts to maps, photographs, and newspapers. Diaries of Melbourne's founding pioneers, Captain Cook's maritime documents, and the original armor and letters of bushranger Ned Kelly are all housed here, and the armor is still on display in the library's Redmond Barry Reading Room. The lawn in front of the library is scattered with giant chessboards and statues, serving as a resting place for nearby office workers and students; inside, readers can be seen studying at their desks all year round. If you are short on time, heading straight to the La Trobe Reading Room after entering and then climbing to the top-level gallery is a classic route to experience the charm of this library.Melbourne · 55.9 km from Tuerong

In Melbourne's Mornington Forest, a pair of kangaroos, father and son, have become the most popular family in the forest. The father kangaroo, steady and tough, is the guardian of the family; the mother kangaroo, gentle and loving, is the soul of the family; the brother kangaroo, lively and curious, is the hope of the family. The little kangaroo in the mother kangaroo's pocket is the future of the family, quiet and dependent. Each kangaroo interprets the happiness and harmony of this family in its own way. When the sun penetrates the leaves and sprinkles on them, their fur gleams with a warm luster, as if the whole world is illuminated by their existence. They jump and play in the forest, and their free and unrestrained attitude towards life makes people applaud and cheer for them. However, their existence also allows us to see the power of nature and the miracle of life. They are not just a group of kangaroos, but also part of this forest and the key to ecological balance. Their existence reminds us to respect nature, protect ecology, and make every corner of this world full of the power of life. When we leave this forest and this kangaroo family, we take away our awe of life, our gratitude for nature, and our love for life. We know that in our lives, we will encounter various challenges and difficulties, but as long as we have enough courage and determination, we will be able to be as tenacious as kangaroos at any time and in any place. Finally, let us pay tribute to this kangaroo family, to the courage and determination they show, and to the life force they represent. May every life be respected and loved, and may every corner be filled with the power of life.

It's actually not bad. There are a lot of people, and I really followed the online suggestions and bought ordinary seats. There is no need to buy too good seats. They will be close to each other anyway. Overall, this trip is worth experiencing.

Lovely place to walk past on the way to the Melbourne museum. This time of the year, there’s autumn leaves covering the walkways. There is even a small pond with some ducks in the corner. And right in front of the royal exhibition hall, there is a fountain where sometimes you will catch couples taking their wedding photos here.

The National Gallery of Victoria is an absolute must-visit when in Melbourne! As Australia’s oldest and most visited art museum, NGV effortlessly blends history, culture, and creativity under one magnificent roof. From classical masterpieces to bold contemporary installations, every exhibit is thoughtfully curated to spark curiosity and inspiration. One of the highlights was the stunning Great Hall with its dazzling stained-glass ceiling—lying beneath.

Melbourne's Red Hill Winery is a classic winemaking winery. It has a large grape plantation that stretches as far as the eye can see. The winery has a history of nearly a hundred years. Huge red oak barrels are neatly placed in the wine cellar, and the aroma is so fragrant that people will be intoxicated by it.
