Szyb Daniłowicza

Szyb Daniłowicza

4.2
Szyb Daniłowicza is located at the Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow, Poland, and serves as one of the key entrances to this UNESCO World Heritage site. As the main shaft of the mine, it is not only historically significant but also offers visitors a unique way to experience the attraction. Through here, visitors can take a modern elevator to quickly descend underground and explore the mysterious world of the salt mine. Inside the salt mine, there are well-designed tour routes that showcase ancient mining equipment, intricately carved salt sculptures, and magnificent underground chapels. These attractions allow visitors to appreciate the combination of centuries of mining history and human creativity. The tour routes are relatively flat and suitable for most visitors, but comfortable shoes are recommended, as the high humidity may make the ground slightly slippery. It is recommended to book tickets in advance to avoid waiting in line. Additionally, the temperature inside the mine is low, so bringing a light jacket will make the trip more comfortable.Wieliczka · 788m from downtown

St. Mary's Basilica

37 reviews
Krakow's St. Mary's Basilica is one of Poland's most beautiful Gothic landmarks. It rises 81m and is a prominent feature around the square. It was built in honor of Mary. For centuries, St. Mary's Basilica has served as the city's principal cathedral, reflecting the typical architectural style of early Christian churches. The building was constructed from handmade red brick, and the church's main structure was completed in the late 14th century. The interior decoration, the tower, and the roof took a full century to finish. The Gothic spire was completed in 1478, and the golden crown atop it was added in 1666 to represent the royal authority of Queen Maria of Poland. The tower also serves as a belfry and houses five large bells. At the top of every hour all five ring together, and their melodious sound can be heard even in distant suburbs. Every hour the trumpeter in the church tower sounds a long note. According to records, this tradition commemorates a medieval trumpeter who loyally stood his post while defending the city against invaders.Krakow · 12.2 km from Wieliczka

The Basilica of Our Lady of Krakow, built in the 13th century on the Central Market Square of Krakow, is a Gothic-style building with two towers, one high and one low. The exquisite carvings, brightly colored wall paintings, dazzling glass windows, and the dome that looks like a starry sky are all eye-catching. Every time it is close to the hour, a large number of tourists will spontaneously gather near the Basilica of Our Lady to wait for the trumpeter in the bell tower to blow, in memory of the brave trumpeter who blew the alarm when the Mongols attacked the city in the 13th century but was shot in the throat by an arrow.

This was once a major center along the international trade routes, and 700 years ago it was open air, selling spices, silk, leather goods, etc. 600 years later (around 1300 AD), a roof was added, and the main trade was textiles, and from then on it was called the Cloth Hall. Today, the ground floor is full of shops/stalls selling all kinds of Polish souvenirs, jewelry, glassware, and the top floor is the Krakow National Gallery. Outside the hall there are many cafes, shops and vendors selling more souvenirs, handmade items and food. There are also many horse-drawn carriages waiting to take you around the old town.
