The Residenz

The Residenz was built between 1720–1744 and is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture in southern Germany, as well as one of the most famous palaces in Europe. It was designed by the renowned German Baroque architect Balthasar Neumann. The Residenz consists of three parts: the palace, the gardens, and the square. It was built by the art-loving Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, who commissioned the famous architect Balthasar Neumann to design and build the palace in 1719, with completion in 1744. The exterior of the palace is a classic example of Baroque architecture, while the interior is ornate Rococo, representing the luxurious and splendid era of the European court.

Old Main Bridge

Old Main Bridge is located in Frankfurt, Germany. It is a historic stone bridge that spans the Main River, connecting the north and south banks of the city. As one of the older bridges in Frankfurt, it is not only a major transportation route but also a witness to the city's history. The bridge's design blends classical and modern elements, attracting many tourists to stop and admire it. In the 18th century, 12 statues of saints were erected on the bridge. Marienberg Fortress

Marienberg Fortress(Festung Marienberg) towers over the Main River and is the symbol of the city. Benefiting from its advantageous position on three steep cliffs, a well-fortified refuge was built here as early as around 1000 BC. One of the oldest remaining structures is the circular church built around the year 1000, located in the inner courtyard of the castle. The church has a Romanesque cylindrical shape, and the interior is decorated in pure white and gold, creating a holy and solemn atmosphere, with icons standing against the walls surrounded by golden leaf decorations. Beneath the rotunda lies the burial ground of the archbishops, and the floor is covered with marble slabs engraved with the images of the deceased. Outside the church, there is a well nearby that is 100 m deep, with the water level at the bottom being level with the Main River. Looking down from the wellhead, it is pitch black, as if it leads to the center of the earth. It was a backup well used by the fortress in emergencies, such as during a siege, which further highlights the castle's primary function as a military fortress. Overlooking the entire Wurzburg from the top of the fortress, one can see breathtaking scenery that is truly refreshing.

Return to the Old Town from the Old Main Bridge, continue straight along Cathedral (Domstr.), and you will soon see the Romanesque St. Kilian's Cathedral (Dom).
