The hotel is located in a great place, The aesthetic is perfect for the building. If you are disabled you may want to give this hotel a miss, as even if you specifically ask to be near a lift when you book they may put you in a room with no lift access at all, and the staff are not very helpful or accommodating even when you have a disability that is affected by stairs.
The queue to check in was over 50 minutes even though we tried to check in much later than 3pm. The hotel has a lot of stairs, the room was not spotlessly clean but adequate and came with all the basic requirements. The view from the windows was great. Overall this is an ok budget hotel that is only suitable if you are able bodied and can deal with a large number of stairs.

Guest UserNot as bad as other reviews suggest, yes it could do with a refurb but it is well priced, friendly staff. Clean room and bathroom. Comfy beds . Amazing views overlooking north bay, ideal as a base to explore. Didn’t eat at the restaurant so cannot comment on food. Don’t be put off by other bad reviews.

Guest UserOverall a great stay, staff very attentive and friendly, executive breakfast good.....2 downsides..very firm mattress and no power points by bed......plus I also think charging guests £15 a night for parking is a bit naughty....I'd suggest £15 per stay for guests staying 2 nights or more....

Guest UserReview:
I had a pleasant stay at Safestay York Micklegate. The location is excellent, within easy walking distance of York city centre, the railway station, the city walls, and major attractions. The building has a historic character, which makes the hostel feel more unique than a standard budget hotel.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and the check-in process was smooth. The room was basic but comfortable enough for a short stay, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed. For the price and location, it offers very good value, especially for solo travellers or people looking for affordable accommodation in York.
The only thing to keep in mind is that it is still a hostel, so some noise and shared facilities are expected. Overall, I would recommend it for a budget-friendly stay in a very convenient part of York.

Very close to the train station, just a few minutes' walk away (it seems like cutting through the adjacent George House is the quickest route). There's no bottled water provided, but the hotel's tap water is drinkable. An electric kettle is available. The Western-style breakfast has a good variety. The room is quiet and spacious. The two bath towels weren't together; one was in the bathroom and the other in the sliding wardrobe. The bed is wide and comfortable.

At the moment the Royal Hotel is undergoing a multi-million pound renovation project so some rooms that still need a little TLC is only to be expected.
I stayed in a standard single with sea view and what a view it was. That alone was worth every penny I paid and, for Whitby, it was a bargain.
The room itself was more than adequate and, with the exception of a bedside table for my phone and drink, it had everything I needed.
The bathroom was massive, bigger than my own at home so no complaints there either.
Whether you want your room cleaned or not, every day a package of tea, coffee, sugar, milk and toilet roll is left for you and if you need anything else, including any essentials you may have forgotten, you just need to ask at reception. We were all even gifted an Easter egg on Easter Sunday which was a lovely, thoughtful touch.
The hotel itself is really lovely and I can highly recommend The Fat Badger restaurant and bars downstairs and every single member of staff I spoke to was lovely and extremely helpful.
The only downside to booking The Royal Hotel is the climb back up on an evening but it's a very small price to pay for the best views in town.

This accommodation is very well situated in the heart of Whitby. The style of the communal areas are lovely. It was quite clean. The communal terrace is also nice, though spider webs could be found every where around the seats. However, there are some downsides which will prevent me from a second stay at this accommodation, which are the lack of parking, challenge of finding an empty car park nearby, extremely small size of the room and lack of essential amenities. The room is too small and you literally need to jump into the bed and stay there for everything you want to do as there’s not enough space in the room to sit. There’s only one chair in the room which is odd for a two bed room. There are no tables to sit at while two drawers are there, which seem unnecessary. There's no refrigerator. Additionally, the mattress or the extra mattress under the bed, and the pillows smelled bad which was really unpleasant. If they complete the amenities, get some reserved parking spot in the Church St car park and replace the smelly stuff with new ones, this place can turn into a decent place to stay. Thanks.

It was just ok sink in bathroom you could see there had been a leak, rooms could do with a bit of a make over, mirror on dressing table was loose kept slipping back as it was a swivel mirror so had to try and put the curtains behind it to keep it straight while trying to do hair, bed wasn't that comfortable every morning woke up with bad back and what shocked me more than anything was NO STILL WATER IN BAR only Sparking could've had from tap but didn't fancy tap water wanted a bottle of water and only had sparkling so couldn't believe a big hotel like that has no bottles of Still water 🙄
But on the up side we were out most of the time so least I could purchase still water from shops, also went in bar for last night and gentleman behind bar not very friendly quiet miserable really with scruffy hair, I work in a coffee shop so work with public and doesn't cost anything to put a smile on your face even if you don't feel like it, anyway all in all it was just ok and not worth what we paid for 3 nights which was over £400 that's Room only to Breakfast not included in that price 🤷♀️

snow4918481The hotel is a bit of a walk from the train station, but the location is still quite convenient. It's close to the river, making it easy to cross the bridge to the other side where you can find dining, shopping, and entertainment, all within walking distance. There's a supermarket nearby, and a restaurant with a terrace on the opposite side. Other than that, it's quite quiet. Overall, the place is pretty well-maintained.
