Panjin's Red Beaches: A Blazing Red Coastline
In Panjin, Liaoning Province, there's a place called the "world's red coastline." It's not a sandy beach, but it's more vibrant than any beach. It's not a flower field, but in autumn it bursts into the most vibrant colors. These are Panjin's red beaches—a natural wonder woven from the fragile grass of the salt marsh plant.
Where does this "red" come from?
The red color of these beaches isn't the sand, but a plant called salt marsh plant (碱蓬草). This low, herbaceous shrub thrives in saline soils. Every spring, it sends up delicate red shoots; in summer, they turn scarlet; and by autumn, they glow a deep purple-red. The organic matter carried by the Liaohe River estuary mixes with the salt from the seawater, creating ideal conditions for the growth of the sweda. This is precisely why this sandbank becomes a unique palette of nature.
♥️When to go?
Best time: Late September to mid-October.
At this time, the sweda's colors are at their most intense—an endless red carpet stretches to the horizon. The weather is also most pleasant: autumn is crisp, mosquitoes are fewer, and the reed beds turn golden. Red and gold intertwine—every photo is wallpaper-worthy.
If you go in August or early September, you might be disappointed: the sweda hasn't yet reached its full bloom, the sandbanks are patchy yellow-green, it's hot, and mosquitoes are rampant. But in April and May, a different, fresh hue emerges: soft red interspersed with pale green, there are few people, and it's quiet—perfect for a leisurely stroll.
The best time of day is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or from 3 p.m. to sunset. At midday, the bright light makes the red color fade, and the texture is indescribable.
How to get there
🚄🚌By high-speed train + bus:
To Panjin Station (盘锦站).
From there, take the Panjin-Honghaitan Tourist Express (盘锦-红海滩旅游专线): about 30 yuan, approximately 50 minutes.
On holidays (Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day), a special bus runs from Panjin Railway Station directly to the park entrance: 20 yuan per ride.
🚗By car:
· In your GPS, enter the South Gate (or "South Gate").
· From Shenyang - about 2.5 hours. Parking is about 10-20 yuan per day.
Important warning: don't trust private drivers offering a "direct transfer" at the station exit – they might take you to a makeshift "wild entrance" behind a fence. Use only official buses or tourist shuttles.
🎟️🕐Tickets and Opening Hours
· Ticket: about 110 yuan per person (including transfers within the area).
· Required: buy a ticket for the tourist train for 35 yuan – the corridor is 18 kilometers long, not walkable.
Discounts: Students and seniors aged 60-69 are half price; children under 1.3 meters and seniors aged 70 and over are free.
Opening Hours: Generally 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM (last admission 4:00-4:30 PM).
📌Practical Tips
Tides: Check the tide chart before your trip. At high tide, the sandbank is flooded, preventing you from seeing a solid red carpet. The best time to view is 1-2 hours after low tide.
Best photo spots: Love Confession Corridor (Love Confession Corridor) - there are fewer people there, allowing you to capture a pure red carpet.
Rice Dream Space (Rice Dream Space) - the 30-meter observation tower offers a view of both the red beach and golden rice fields.
What to bring: mosquito repellent (especially in reeds), sunscreen. White or light blue clothing looks best against the red backdrop.
