These arches once helped build Venice’s power in Crete. ⚓
Right beside Heraklion’s Old Venetian Harbor, you’ll notice a long row of huge stone arches — the Venetian Arsenals.
They may look like old warehouses today, but centuries ago this was one of the busiest parts of the harbor.
The Venetians built these shipyards to construct, repair and maintain their ships. The large vaulted spaces were designed so vessels could be brought inside directly from the water.
Heraklion — then known as Candia — was an important Venetian stronghold, and its harbor played a major role in controlling trade and sea routes around Crete.
Today, only part of this enormous shipbuilding complex survives.
And I love the contrast here: ancient Venetian arches behind you, modern yachts in front of you, cafés along the harbor… and Koules Fortress just a short walk away. ❤️
So if you visit Koules, don’t just turn around and leave. Take some time to walk around the Old Venetian Harbor — there is much more history here than it first seems.
Would you have guessed these arches were once shipyards? 👀
