Exploring Lagos at Elegushi Royal Beach 🌊 – this beach is something else, seriously so good! Whether you hit it on a moody, cloudy day or under the blazing Nigerian sun, the vibes are always epic. The waves crash right up to the shore, perfect for scribbling your own handwritten words in the sand (yes, you should definitely try it), and even with an overcast sky, the sea scenery looks like a movie set.

Top Spots to Visit:
Elegushi Royal Beach
Address: By Road 3 Lekki Phase 1, Lekki 106104, Nigeria
Open: Year-round, all day
This is THE spot if you want an easy mix of local flavor and chill atmosphere. Entry is affordable, there’s solid security, and you’ll find vendors selling coconut drinks and spicy street grilled meats. Grab a seat or just wander – it's perfect for solo travelers or groups.

Personal tip: Even on cloudy or rainy days, this beach shines. The crowd thins out, leaving you with peaceful stretches for Insta-ready shots and introspective walks. Plus, handwritten notes on damp sand last longer before the waves claim them!

Getting Around:
Public taxis and ride apps work fine in Lekki; if you’re staying close, you can even walk. There’s parking on-site if you drive, but weekends get busy fast.

What to Eat:
Try the coconut water from beachside vendors, and don’t skip the hot spiced suya for a quick, irresistible snack.

Destination Tips:
No entry visa needed if you’re local. Bring cash (Naira) for vendors. Weather’s tropical: expect sudden downpours, so pack a light rain jacket. The best time for photos is right after the rain, when the light hits the waves perfectly.

Discovering Nigeria’s Artistic Soul in Lagos

Most visitors to Lagos are drawn to its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and bustling markets. But during one of my explorations, I discovered a place that revealed a completely different side of Nigeria. A place where culture, creativity and history come together in the most colourful way.

The first thing that caught my attention was a beautifully painted vintage bus parked outside the outdoor museum. Covered in bold colours and imaginative artwork, it felt like the perfect welcome into a world where art has no limits. I couldn’t resist taking a photo before continuing my tour.

What surprised me most was the outdoor sculpture garden. Instead of simply displaying artworks, the museum celebrates Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity through sculptures of traditional musicians and dancers from different ethnic groups.

I found myself fascinated by the Calabar Drummer, frozen in motion as if the rhythm could begin at any moment. Nearby stood the Kakaki player, holding the famous long ceremonial trumpet used in northern Nigeria during royal celebrations. A little further on, the graceful Atilogwu dancer from southeastern Nigeria reminded me of the incredible athleticism and energy of Igbo traditional performances.

Each sculpture tells a story. Every instrument has a history. Every culture has its own unique rhythm.

Walking through the peaceful grounds, surrounded by towering trees and colourful art, I realised that travelling isn’t only about seeing famous landmarks. Sometimes the most memorable experiences come from discovering places that introduce you to the soul of a destination.

If you’re planning a trip to Lagos, don’t limit yourself to the usual attractions. Set aside a few hours to explore its art scene. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation of Nigeria’s creativity, diversity, and cultural heritage.

For me, this wasn’t just a museum visit,it was a journey through the sounds, colours, and traditions that make Nigeria one of Africa’s richest cultural destinations.

Travel Tip: Visit during the morning or late afternoon when the weather is cooler. Take your time to read the descriptions beside each sculpture. They add a whole new dimension to the experience and help you appreciate the traditions behind the art.

Have you visited an art museum that completely changed your perception of a destination? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
