MONA's exhibits are very diverse, it's the first time I've seen so many rock walls, light and shadow and spatial design.

If you ever visit Tasmania, Australia, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in the capital city of Hobart is absolutely worth fitting into your itinerary. It was hands down one of the most surprising highlights of my Tasmanian trip.

MONA opened its doors in 2011, boasting a collection that spans ancient artifacts and contemporary art. However, beyond the exhibits themselves, what left the deepest impression on me was the spatial experience created by the architecture.

The interior is a labyrinth of long corridors, towering walls, staircases, suspended walkways, and exhibition halls of varying scales. Some spaces are claustrophobically narrow, while others suddenly open up dramatically. One moment you might be walking past a rugged bedrock wall, and the next, you're stepping into a stark white gallery or a corridor of light and shadow. There’s no strict designated path for the tour; it feels more like slowly exploring an underground maze. The spatial design is incredibly diverse.

MONA’s exhibits are notoriously subversive, and the architecture perfectly echoes that vibe. It doesn't just let you stand quietly and observe the art. Instead, it plays with darkness, sound, textures, and spatial dimensions to directly manipulate your emotions.

For me, the most fascinating aspect is how hard it is to separate the building from the art. I might not remember the name of every piece, but I’ll never forget the feeling of walking down a dimly lit hallway, standing beside a three-story-high wall, or suddenly catching a beam of light underground.

MONA proves that a cultural landmark doesn't have to dominate a city's skyline to make an impact. By choosing to hide beneath the earth, it forces visitors to physically descend into its depths to truly experience its profundity.

The museum's website describes it as: "MONA is David Walsh's playground and megaphone. He grew up in Tassie (just down the road from MONA), dropped out of university, played cards, won, did some other stuff, and opened a museum of antiquities that no one came to. In the dimly lit exhibition spaces, the interplay of light and shadow, sound, and installations constantly stimulated the senses. At times, standing before certain works, I was overwhelmed by emotions that defied explanation.

MONA is the largest privately owned museum in the Southern Hemisphere, displaying the private collection of David Walsh, a professional gambler from Tasmania, sourced from all over the world.  His collection reveals a man of discerning taste, with many peculiar and unusual items. It's definitely worth a visit! We need more wealthy patrons like him!  The adult ticket price is AUD 39. The gift shop is also worth browsing.

Itinerary & Highlights:
The museum itself is a fascinating blend of old and contemporary art, housed in a striking building that seems to rise from the ground. The collection is vast, with artworks ranging from ancient artifacts to thought-provoking modern installations. Some of the highlights include the *Eternal Return* exhibition, a large-scale installation that is both visually stunning and emotionally powerful, and *Cai Guo-Qiang's* explosive art that immediately grabs your attention.

The MONA Ferry Ride:
One of the best parts of the visit was taking the MONA ferry from Hobart’s waterfront. The ride itself offers beautiful views of the river and the city, adding a unique touch to the journey before even stepping foot inside the museum.

The Museum's Layout:
The interior of MONA is labyrinthine, with multiple levels and rooms that lead you to unexpected discoveries. It’s an art lover’s dream with installations that engage the senses in every direction. You’ll want to take your time, as there’s a lot to see, and each exhibit offers something different and thought-provoking. Don’t miss the Pharos, a rooftop bar with a fantastic view, ideal for a break to take in the scenery and reflect on the art.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment I arrived, I was amazed by the bold, unique design of the museum and its intriguing approach to art.

The museum itself is a fascinating blend of old and contemporary art, housed in a striking building that seems to rise from the ground. The collection is vast, with artworks ranging from ancient artifacts to thought-provoking modern installations. Some of the highlights include the *Eternal Return* exhibition, a large-scale installation that is both visually stunning and emotionally powerful, and *Cai Guo-Qiang's* explosive art that immediately grabs your attention.

One of the best parts of the visit was taking the MONA ferry from Hobart’s waterfront. The ride itself offers beautiful views of the river and the city, adding a unique touch to the journey before even stepping foot inside the museum.

The interior of MONA is labyrinthine, with multiple levels and rooms that lead you to unexpected discoveries. It’s an art lover’s dream with installations that engage the senses in every direction. MONA in Hobart is the largest private art museum in the Southern Hemisphere, known as the "Disneyland for adults." I'll talk about the strange exhibits in another post, but first, let me share the James Turrell piece "Unseen Seen" that gave me a huge sensory shock. In short, this piece let me see my own brain.

This piece is in the museum's restaurant, Faro, where a huge spherical space capsule sits in the center of the restaurant. The high triangular space and the open water outside look like a scene from a space opera movie, giving the impression that it doesn't belong here, yet it fits in perfectly.

The door of the space capsule slides open, and the interior is larger than expected. There are steps on both sides along the spherical arc, and at the top, there is a cushion. Once you lie down, the show begins.

There is no visual focal point on the dome ceiling, and James Turrell's signature light show hits the ceiling and then my retina, losing all reference points.

Before the show starts, you can choose a mode, Hard or Soft. We chose Hard, and without warning or transition, countless colors flooded into my brain, with more than a dozen colors changing every second, quickly blurring into a dazzling curtain of light in my mind.

My gaze began to blur, and I felt my eyes were closed. When I blinked, I realized they were open the whole time, but all I could see was darkness. I was wearing noise-canceling headphones, but I felt my heart beating fast, like I was spinning on an endless roller coaster.

My eyes lost their function, the light became heavy, and my brain touched the colors before my retina, as if an endoscope was shuttling between my cerebral cortex, with a slight, wonderful intracranial tremor.

Every groove in my brain was opened, and all my senses surrendered. I lay there, feeling like I was floating in zero gravity. It felt like a long time had passed, but I didn't want to miss a second.

I've said so much, but I can't really describe this piece. All I can say is that it's worth putting on your bucket list, a truly mind-blowing experience.
