Suomenlinna or Sveaborg (Swedish) , is a sea fortress composed of eight islands , of which six have been fortified, it is about 4km southeast of the city centre of Helsinki , the capital of Finland . Suomenlinna is popular with tourists and locals , who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site . Originally named Sveaborg (Castle of the Swedes) , or Viapori as referred to by Finnish speaking Finns , it was renamed Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland ) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons , though it is still known by its original name in Sweden and by Swedish speaking Finns . Due to its strategic geographical location , it sometimes use to be known as the Gibraltar of the North. Suomenlinna became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1991. The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism . During the Finnish war , Sweeen surrendered the fortress to Russia , on the 3rd of May 1808, paving the way for the occupation of Finland by Russian forces in 1809 , the islands were then used as a base for the Russian Baltic fleet in World War 1 . Russian forces left after Finland declared its full independence in 1917, Finland then managed Suomenlinna through its Defence Department until turning most of it over to civilian control in 1973. There is a ferry service to Suomenlinna which runs 1-4 times per hour from the morning till night throughout the year and the journey takes approximately 15mins . The ferry departs from the east side of the Market Square opposite the Presidential Palace , and arrives and departs from the main Pier of Iso Mustasaari Island , on the north shore of Suomenlinna. There are ticket machines to purchase tickets in the departure Pier . There is plenty to do on Suomenlinna including several Museums , Toy Museum , Custom Museum and Military , including the Submarine Vesikko . And also several Bars and Restaurants and gift shop . I spent a whole day there exploring and had a great time before getting the ferry back to Helsinki and my Hotel. And it’s definitely worth a visit ! 👍🏼

#naturalbeauty Suomenlinna, a 18th century sea fortress in Helsinki, Finland, consisting of several defensive and utilitarian buildings that blend the architecture and functionality of the fortress within the surrounding stunning landscape. This huge fortress has a total of six kilometres of defensive walls still standing and these walls surround numerous walking trails and parks, several restaurants and cafes, a playground, a theatre, an art gallery and six museums. I enjoyed my walk along the nicely laid trails while admiring this beautiful nature.

Boarding gate also closes 30 mins before, don’t be late! P.S: The breakfast buffet is amazing 😋 - Places to visit: Viru Gate, St. Catherine’s Passage, Hellemann Tower, Town Hall Square, Town Hall Pharmacy, Pikk Street, Balti Jaam Market, St. Olaf’s Church, Kiek in de Kök Museum 🗺️ Day 3 — Explore Helsinki - Wander around the city 🚶 - Worth visiting: Senate Square, Esplanade Park, Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki Cathedral, Temppeliaukio Church, Löyly Sauna, Allas Sea Pool, Oodi Library, Kirpilä Art Collection 🗺️ - Take the overnight VR train to Rovaniemi (book on the official VR website). 🚂 Day 4 — Santa Claus Village (Rovaniemi) - Take public bus No. 8 to Santa Claus Village. 🚌 💡Tip: Download the Waltti Mobiili App for bus schedules. I bought my ticket directly from the driver. - Recommended route to avoid crowds: Santa meet & greet → Reindeer ride → Lunch at Santa’s Salmon Place → Husky ride at Bearhill Husky 💡Tip: Husky ride must be booked in advance! - Join an aurora hunting tour. Highly recommend @lorenzmira_lapland (includes photography services). 📸 Day 5 — Korouoma Canyon + Private Sauna - Take a hiking tour to Korouoma Canyon (booked with Wild About Lapland). 🥾 The frozen waterfalls are absolutely breathtaking! - Book a private sauna + ice bath session at Apukka Resort. We did a big road trip all across Finland in winter and it was one of our most favorite but also most freezing trips ever 😁 Here are our tips: 🗺️ Places to visit / Things to do: 1. Watch the Northern Lights 🌌 In northern Finland you can see them during a clear night between September to April 🥹 We were there in January. 2.&3. Stay in a glass igloo ❄️ We stayed at @kakslauttanen_arctic_resort (*Azeige) and it was so magical ❤️ Their roofs are heated so you can see the sky all night and they even have an alarm for northern lights 💫 4. Kemi 🩷 There’s also an igloo village (open for day tourists but also to spend the night 🥶) 5. Go for a husky sleigh ride 🛷 6.&7. Helsinki 8. Visit a reindeer farm 🦌 9.&10. Oulanka National Park 💦 Make sure to visit Santa Claus in Rovaniemi & cross the Arctic Circle ❄️😍 🚗 How to get around Definitely by car! If you travel in winter make sure your car is a 4x4 (we got stuck in the snow once and a tractor had to pull us out 😂) 🏨 Where to stay? There are many unique accommodations in Finland! Like tree houses, igloos, cozy cabins in the woods and much more 🤗 Many of these are quite expensive but it’s really worth it! ⏰ Best time to visit All year round 🤗 In the winter it’s very magical with all the snow but also extremely cold so make sure to be prepared 🧣 🐶 Is Finland dog friendly? Overall yes but most restaurants don’t allow dogs. Better check in advance if the activities you want to do are dog friendly. At the husky sleigh farm / reindeer farm we couldn’t bring Felix for example.
