黄蝶以淡黄蝶类的无纹黄蝶和银纹淡黄蝶为主。每年约产２００万只，特别在３至５月的蝴蝶盛产期，成千上万的鲜黄小蝶在谷内自由纷飞，翩翩起舞，如带带浮云，片片彩霞，成为一大奇观，河谷的名称也由此改为“黄蝶翠谷”。

前往美浓的锺理和纪念馆、双溪母树林、朝元禅寺..那麽你一定不会错过这个景点，在靠近朝元禅寺前的道路右侧有一根柱子以及停车场，这里就是黄蝶翠谷了，非常美丽

黄蝶翠谷属于高屏溪上游，曾经是台湾重要鸟类栖地之一，翠谷内的环境提供了黄蝶幼虫充分的食草及成长空间，也能供应成虫及每个阶段所需，因此每年都有大量的澹黄蝶出现在翠谷之间。生态保护非常好！
