What travelers say:

Fontenay Monastery (French: Abbaye de Fontenay) is a Burgundy-area monastery built in the 12th century, is the oldest church in France and one of the oldest Sido monasteries in Europe. The monastery itself sits in the mountains, like a secluded place, and was listed on the World Heritage List in 1981. Built in the Burgundy Valley by St. Bernard, the monastery is in a Romanesque style, and the monastery's churches, cloisters, restaurants, accommodations, bakeries and steel mills perfectly illustrate the ideal of self-sufficiency for the early Sistrian monks. The monastery's buildings contain five separate religious spaces, each with its own purpose. The church is a cross-shaped rectangular Christian church consisting of a central square with two corridors, a cross-shaped wing of the church and a flat-out chapel. Other buildings in the monastery are now well preserved, including the cloisters, built like churches in the 12th century, and are prominent representations of today's well preserved Roman architecture. The conference rooms and cloisters, like all Sido monastery, have an arched cross wing rib. It is here that the order of Saint Bernard is read every morning. In accordance with Saint Bernard's order, the monks grow vegetables and herbs in the garden.
