Kang Youwei Former Residence Memorial of Qingdao

Kang Youwei was a major leader of the Reform Movement in the late Qing Dynasty. After the failure of the Reform Movement, he went into exile abroad and returned to his motherland after the Revolution of 1911. In 1923, Kang Youwei came to Qingdao and bought this building to live in. He was very satisfied with this courtyard and said, "This house in Qingdao is the best I have ever had in my life." "This house is small but the garden is very large. The sea is only a hundred steps away." Kang Youwei lived here for a period of time every year until he died of illness in Tianyou Garden on March 31, 1927.

The park was built in 1899. It is a three-story building with a German-style brick-concrete structure. It was the official residence of the German governor-general's office in Qingdao during the German occupation of Qingdao. The house is a brick-wood structure.
